They weren't on a field trip and he wasn't a park ranger. They escaped a facility that was either a vault or some mad max style tribal civilization. Randall Clark is the ranger. Went hiking before the bombs feel and basically was suicidal over not dying with his wife and son. Sometime later Mexicans come into the valley and he watched over them, then Vault Dwellers come and kill the men and imprison the women and children. Later they eat them and he kills 300 of them in a span of 3 months and meets one of them who ran away. Marries her and gets her pregnant. Baby is a breech so he's alone again and blames himself for their deaths. He then contemplates suicide for the next few years. The kids come along and he watches after them telling them to be good to each other and make sure anyone who hurts them pays. Instead of revealing himself, which he thinks would disappoint them, he dies under the stars thanking them for showing him innocence.

Really well written though. Like Honest Hearts wasn't to content rich, but that's like a good episode of the Twilight Zone.

I thought it was going to be like Journey with something nice at the end, but all I felt was sadness and pity for the poor guy. I couldn't imagine going through something so easily-preventable and guilt-inducing.
