What it did right was those creepy childhood icons in an unsettling PS1-era-prerendered-cinematic graphics.

It's ok.
Few games before it were like it (as far as I am aware, there was only Night Trap, which was like a scripted version that needed precise timing for the whole thing), and it uses the jumpscares properly, not as the main horror element but rather as a punishment designed to create tension and dread around avoiding it.
However, the second game simply makes it drop the horror due to having TOO much to manage. It creates a lot more tension due to how twitchy it is, but loses the horror aspect.
The third was better, as it used less things to attack, but ultimately fell somewhat flat despite having the most gruesome of the robots so far, since the hallucinations only really work once and are way weaker in usage as they simply function as a debuff, taking away tension and simply acting as frustration.
The 4th did it better than the previous two but still not as good as the first. It used sound to provide the tension, making it considerably better than the debuffs of the third one while feeling fresher than the second. However once again, two mechanics dragged it down a bit, namely the closet and bed, for the same reasons as 3, although they carry the same gameover consequence that the others do.
5 is nothing like the others and focuses more on a narrative.
I'd say it is respectable (particularly 1 and 5) but not the best.

As far as horror goes the only one I found legitimately unnerving was the first one. The animatronics had pretty neutral expressions that were just vaguely wrong, which is exactly what is creepy about actual animatronics. The reason blank masks are scary to humans is because being unable to discern intent gives us a primal fear or uncomfortable feeling, which is what's created with the original animatronics just having dead blank expressions that just look off or wrong in some unplaceable way. That combined with the way they peak into the windows was just great horror fodder.

The jumpscares are pretty secondary to the scarefactor to just the run-down atmosphere and designs, although the first time I saw Foxy running down the hallway I shat my pants since it's the only time you see motion in the cameras.

In FNAF2 we got these sort of "monster" versions of the originals all busted up and then in later iterations we got ACTUAL monster versions and those just aren't as scary. A huge amount of people have a fear for animatronics already because animatronics hit that sweet spot of "wrongness" in their blank dead eyes and unnatural simulation movements.
