Now that the series is over, we can all agree that this is the best one right?
>>
No.
>>
>>382294069
Ill agree with that. Might be a little biased as this was my first Metal Gear, had never played anything as bat shit crazy and wonderful.
>>
>>382294069
2 might be the best but 3 is still my favourite

Nope :)
>>
>>382294069
First one is best one, the rest are good but have their problems.

>be me
>get ps2 on 10th birthday
>buy this cool looking game from Game Crazy

I think I got to a cutscene with a helicopter outside of the tanker, but I just did not understand the gameplay at all.

At least I understand the hiding in a box stressed out aspect.
>>
>>382294069
> shit boss fights
> lots of backtracking

no
>>
>>382294069
I think its one of the best to replay. It doesn't start off as slow as MGS3 or 4, and it doesn't slow down near the end like MGS1. And all the dogtags to collect.
>>
>>382294628
this :)
>>
>>382295827
This. 3 is great but it kinda feels like a slog until the fight with The Fear. 4 is just a slog most of the way through, the first two acts are really the only ones replayable, act 4 is decent for nostalgia as well. 3 is just pure trash and 5 is literally one corridor + 2 boss fights.
>>
Wayyy too short of a game for it to be the best.

Metal Gear Survive is MG.O.A.T.

sorry you cling to the past, scrubs. Zombies are the FUTUREEEEEEEEEE

No.

The first one is the best one, that's the second best.
>>
>>382297910
It's not even out, low quality bait
>>
>>382294069
it's ruined by a few factors:
Raiden
The Patriots
The shit design of Big Shell
bad boss fights
>>

it was just a rehash of 1

3 was the superior game
>>

Ruined, or made better? He was a piece of shit in 2 and glad Konami changed him
>>
>>382298585
Raiden in 2 is the best character in Metal Gear
>>

Definitely my favorite along with MG2 and GB.

There are things I would change about it, but it's a masterfully designed game and the extra stuff Substance throws in is the right kind of extra stuff.
>>382298485

It really isn't.

2 was the best gameplay wise.

I don't know why but I fucking hated 3. Sitting around in bushes waiting for slowly walking guards to pass by was not fun. I don't know why people fell over themselves for it.

2 was the best mix between arcadey stealth action and meticulous planning. Plans were executed quickly, guards were smart enough to follow up on calls, and getting found didn't mean you could just blast everyone to hell and everything would be OK. At least not with Raiden's weak ass.

2 remains my favorite. 4 and 5 are close behind.

my favorite stealth action game ever is still Splinter Cell
>>

The only but big thing that makes me dislike MGS2 are the controls. The aiming has a strange acceleration applied to it that makes it very hard to aim. The camera is often too close so an enemy could be standing right next to you and you wouldn't see him. You need to know the game by heart if you want to not get detected. MGS3:Subsistence fixed all that.
>>
>>382299874
>He likes the MGS series for its stealth gameplay

LMAO
>>
>>382299304
i have it. all i really remember was the multiplayer mode which was fun as fuck. its good if its on sale for like under $20

>>382299304
>>382300259
disregard my last comment. its on sale for like $10 right now. i def recommend in this case
>>
>>382299991
I prefer that about it, because it means that lining up a shot takes time and involves a bit of care. The more dense level design also means there's a greater risk of exposure. The emphasis on timing is more meaningful.
>You need to know the game by heart
No, you just have to be cautious and deliberate.
>>382300003
I bet you think Thief is amazing. I like Thief and plenty of other stealth games, but I can appreciate the unique ways Metal Gear approaches what it does and how.

Fuck Thief, Splinter Cell is king and blows MGS out of the water. Also Tenchu was the best stealth game in 1998.
>>
I wish the gameplay portion of Snake in New York City wasn't cut
>>
>>382299293
CQC was literally EZ mode. It made anyone you could get within arms reach of basically a kitten

Which is why MGS3 was so fucking boring. You wait in the bushes for guards to pass by, slam. Wait in bushes for guards to pass by, slam.

Raiden at least had to go into first person and aim at vital spots to do takedowns. There was no easy one-tilt solution for him like Boss has.

I guess you were just too stupid to appreciate the CQB system and actually having to work for your slams.
>>
>>382299183
V is the best gameplay wise but it doesn't give you anything to do with it. So then I guess 2 is better since the gameplay accentuates the game's design. I'm with you about it being perfectly arcade-y.
>>
>>382299304
Not really. Blacklist is just a third person shooter from Ubisoft disguised as a stealth game.
It's better than Conviction, I'll give it that. It may be worth a play if you can get it discounted.
>>
>>382299293
did you ever even play MGS2? that's how you knocked people out there, too.

>>
>>382294069
having played mgs 2 on release, and the whole series again recently... I have to agree it was the best one at release, and the game with the most intriguing premise and setting. it also had the most mindblowing graphics for its time. the story did get silly though, but that's true for all of them except mgs1.
>>
>>382300356
>>382299304
Oh yeah, definitely get it if it's 10 dollars
You'll have to dick with uplay, but its worth it.
>>
gameplay is too bad
level design is too repetitive
enemies are too stupid outside battles
>>
>>382301038
well you can technically perfect stealth through almost all of the game, and where you can't it's pretty obvious, so I think you're going a little far saying it's not a stealth game. I certainly played it as one and it wasn't bad.
>>
>>382301259
>except mgs1
MGS1 is quite wacky, anon.
>>
>>382296589
>>ruined metal gear ray
by making it decent at fighting? cause every metal gear game painted ray as a fucking joke, MK3 could beat a ray

hmmm
>>
>>382301428
Maybe that was hyperbole, yes.

And also yes at 10 dollars you really can't go wrong with it.
>>
>>382300947
Gameplay includes level design and mission variety. It has the best movement mechanics.
>>
>>382299132
3 is the most overrated in the series by far.
>>
Metal Gear Solid is one of my favorite games. Nostalgia has a lot to do with it though, The characters and voice acting was better than any movie, still is in my opinion.
>>
>>382301596
a tiny man with a sword and whitout arms could lift REX

tiny man's with swords are too OP in the MG universe
>>
>>382301645
>It has the best movement mechanics.
I don't think you can really judge that independent of how they operate within the rest of the design.
>>
>>382301657
being overrated doesnt make something not good
>>
>>382294069
No. Cool themes but Big Shell is the worst place.
>>
>>382294069
I like them all a lot except for V
>>
>>382301989
>Big Shell is the worst place
Nah. It's aesthetically limited, but the actual level design is great.
>>
>>382301657
It's definitely overrated, but it's still the only one that merits acclaim. What it is missing in writing, characters, plot, and stealth mechanics is made up for by its attention to detail, level design, boss fights, and environmental variety
>>
>>382296589
>ruined Metal Gear RAY
Dude, it was always shit. Raiden took down half a dozen of them with a Stinger on his own. A broken down, dilapidated REX defeated one easily.
>>
>>382301596
A man living inside of another mans hand and being able to take over that man's body from the hand is good but THAT'S WAY TO CRAZY MAN
>>
>>382302097
You're basically going around in circles for half the game. Half the struts are lame. Also, fuck swimming.
>>
>>382302325
The swimming section takes like 5 minutes if you're not an absoulte retard and can actually stop for a second and think about how the controls work
>>
>>382302325
Are you the same retard from the other thread that had difficulty with the swimming part?
>>
>>382302097
Would Shipping... and Receiving be as good if the whole map was made of identical orange blocks.
>>
>>382302418
It's still awkward and clunky. The swimming sections in DMC1 wasn't that long either, but they were still shit. And yet, I'd actually argue that they were less shit than MGS2's.
>>
>>382302192
Wasn't that retconned
>>
>>382302418
>takes like 5 minutes
That's pretty generous, especially if you don't bother to explore. Even five minutes is a stretch.
>>382302325
>Half the struts are lame
Nope. The layouts and enemy placement are pretty much always great.
>>
>>382302587
I think you're underselling the visual variety in the game a bit. Still, MGS2 has good level design.
>>
A lot of good opinions in this thread!

This guy >>382294628 correctly identified the best Metal Gear game within only four posts!

And these guys
>>382300803
>>382299183
know what they're talking about when it comes to stealth gameplay.

Maybe the Metal Gear series will one day reach this level of excellence in the stealth genre, but personally I hope Kojima Productions will continue to focus on what they do best: hack'n'slash action games with great soundtracks and very little boring dialogue or exposition :^)
>>
>>382302708
The only interesting strut was Strut F. Strut B and E were boring. The cores were too straightforward and simple. I'm not sure if it counts but Arsenal Gear was hilariously basic. Shell 2 was a bit more interesting, though, aside from the lame swimming and easily avoidable mines. Why the fuck are there water mines in a place like that anyway?
>>
>>382299183
I tried playing chaos theory and it just made me want to play MGS4
>>
>>382303218
>Arsenal Gear was hilariously basic.
It stripped the game design to its basic core and upped the tension because the player didn't have anything to rely on but his own timing.

I found some struts more interesting than others, but they were all pretty consistently interesting.
>>
>>382303654
It also dumbed down the AI of the soldiers. I feel like the bosses were all easier than in MGS1 too, except maybe Solidus, at least when compared to Liquid.
>>
>>382294069
Yes.
>>
>>382294069
No. MGS2 is easily one of the worst games.
>>
>>382294069
No, a lot of it's gameplay elements are shoved aside for garbage that has nothing to do with stealth. Also awful gameplay-cutscene/set-piece ratio.
>>
while it wasnt my favorite, the music and the story of it was imo the best. I feel that the team just didnt have enough time to perfect the game. also, the political statement is a1

Splinter Cell is garbage, so your shit opinions were expected.
>>
>>382300803
Splinter Cell blew itself into dead franchise territory. Not even worthy of a UFO catcher game it was so bad. Kek.
>>
>>382299991
I found the aiming fine. What I didn't find fine was the fact that you aim, shoot, and put your gun away all with square. I reached a point with my PS2 controller where I could reliably put the gun away 99% of the time but the pressure sensitivity is different of a PS3 controller and I kept accidentally shooting people in the HD version when I held them up.
>>
MGS2 was weird. It had a large number of non-stealth segments. The final stretch is charging headlong into groups of enemies, slicing them down with a sword. The RAY fight gave you no cover or means to avoid their sight so it was really straightforward.

It's my personal favorite one. I don't understand why people hate it to be honest. In terms of gameplay it does everything the first MGS game did and did it better. Story wise it's pretty great too. It certainly stacked on the emotions.
>>
>>382308792
The bosses were even easier somehow. Why is fighting a Harrier easier than fighting a Hind D? Hunting for bombs was boring.
>>
>>382309065
To be fair though I think the sniper in MGS1 was unnecessarily difficult to use which made fighting sniper wolf a pain.
