I thought Gothic 1 was medicore too but loved Gothic 2

Also i recommend you start NoTR (just follow the ornament questline) during Act II before you go to the Valley of Mines because after you finish NoTR you will be more powerful and valley of mines will be easier

You should install DX11 if you haven't already, it makes the game look much better and If i remember correctly you can install it and still keep your saves if im not mistaken but im not sure so double check

If you have any silver chalices or other silver stuff don't sell it, after you decide to spare Halvor later on he buys them from you for a good price. Not sure if that's after the thieves guild or the weapon dealer quest tho

DX11, there's also L'hiver which improves the graphics even futher, adds new items, rebalances a few stuff and changes the map a little, but it makes the game more difficult so it's not recommended for new players
