It's as simple as this. As a fan, I would cut my balls off for some kind of meaningful continuation of Half Life but from their raw business perspective there's frankly no reason. And by not saying anything about it they can protect themselves from the extreme backlash that would occur if the abandonment of Half Life was officially confirmed.
