What's the point in super slow, lumbering Metal Gears launching nukes from anywhere on 30% of the planet when we already have submarines that can launch nukes from anywhere on 70% of the planet?

PS: Railguns can't shoot things that far. 100 miles, tops. You need rocket propellant to get anywhere.

Are you trying to tell me that Hideo Kojima is NOT the planet's foremost military strategist
>>
>that time skullface followed the second best infiltrator/soldier in the world (the first being his mentor) in MGS3, cleaning up his mess and helping him, but he didn't notice it
KOJIMA SURE IS A GOOD WRITER!

The closer the Nuke is to its target the less time they have to react to it being fired. The point of the metal gears was not to launch nukes particularly far, but to be able to launch a strike from anywhere on land instead of just from missile bases, making it harder to predict and defend against nuclear strikes since their point of origin would be harder to pin down, and the time between launch and impact would be lower.
>>
>>382244469
And you still have the little problem of transporting the 15m mecha across borders. And that pesky railgun would have a massive heat signature upon firing.
>>
>>382244631
But once the nuke is fired it no longer matters if the enemy finds out where the metal gear is since it'd already be too late to stop the launch, and if militaries can move aircraft carriers, cargo planes, and large groups of soldiers with a reasonable level of covertness it's not outlandish to assume the same could be accomplished with a metal gear, especially back during the cold war when surveillance technology wasn't as good as it is now.
>>
>>382244469
If you want a stealth nuclear attack then suitcase nukes already exist and are significantly cheaper.
>>
>>382244905
>during the cold war

MGS1 was set in 2005. The Shagohod needed several miles of tarmac to wind up a shot. ACs and planes have the advantages of being in the sea and air, not stuck on land if they want to be anywhere other than the coast.
>>
>>382244215
Only Rex had a rail gun to launch nukes, the rest I think used ICBMs (Sahelanthropus couldn't launch a nuke, it's rail gun was purely defensive)
And all the Metal Gears, like Rex, were destroyed before Mass Production could begin, at which point, for smaller or land locked countries even a single Metal Gear would be infinitely more cost effective sand manageable than a nuclear submarine.
>>
>>382245448
If you have an ICBM then why the fuck do you need a robot? The entire goddamn point of an ICBM is that the the launch site doesn't have to be anywhere near the target.
>>
>>382245448
what about Subsand ships? Ships that travel under sand.

I don't know why this made me laugh
>>

I suppose Metal Gears deployed in the field and capable of independent operation wouldn't be vulnerable to a surprise first strike against air bases (housing nuclear capable bombers) or launch silos. Rather than being used between super powers they would (like for Outer Heaven and Zanzibar Land) drastically alter regional balances of power.
>>
>>382245686
They would be sub sandboats, as submarine is a contraction of 'submarine boat' and it's technically wrong to call subs ships.

I only got significantly far in 3 and 5. 3 the metal gear Shagohod is a sort of generation skipping air-mobile artillery capable of firing a ballistic nuke up to 650km. In 5 the gears are also highly advanced conventional weapon systems but with the added utility of converting the depleted uranium that makes up their armor into weapons grade uranium through the metalic arcanum bio weapon.

The use and practicality of each gear was dependent on their application. In 3 the gear was going to be the game changer that the splinter group seeking to coup the current Soviet government would use to end the cold war. In 5 the gears and metalic arcanum would be provided to multiple factions to create a sort of open source nuclear weapons program which, combined with the language targeting parasite bio-weapon would be used to establish a new world order free of influential super powers, mostly America.

TPP wasn't bad enough, they had to go and try to fuck with Snake Eater too. It's pointless too, because trying to push the retcon further back to make it seem more legit doesn't work when back then there wasn't any indication of it at all.

At least good old Solid's games are mostly intact.
>>
>>382244215
There's no point at all. Metal Gears exist because mechs are cool, all the discussion about them in the games is just mental gymnastics attempting to justify them, but their primary purpose is Rule of Cool.
>>
The real question is how was RAY supposed to be an Anti-Metal Gear?
>>
I like how every game makes Big Boss seem less and less impressive, yet Solid Snake only continually ups the ante all the way up to his death.
>Metal Gear: Destroy Metal Gear and defeat Big Boss('s double).
>Metal Gear 2: Defeat FOXHOUND's best member, destroy Metal Gear and defeat Big Boss (for real this time).
>Metal Gear Solid: Defeat Metal Gear, defeat his brother (who is supposed to be his genetic superior), become a hero
>Sons of Liberty: Constantly one-up Raiden, fuck up the Patriots' plans just by existing.
>Guns of the Patriots: Even though his accelerated aging is destroying his body to the point where he shouldn't be anywhere near a battlefield anymore, he still defeats the B&B Corps, crawls through a microwave and defeats Liquid Ocelot.

Meanwhile, with Big Boss:
>Snake Eater: His first two missions were huge messes from start to finish.
>Peace Walker: COMPLETELY fails to understand The Boss's will, then throws a hissy fit when he realizes that he got The Boss wrong the whole time.
>Phantom Pain: So turns out, even with how shit Virtuous Mission and Snake Eater turned out, they rub salt on the wound and reveal that he was being supported from behind the scenes in spite of all that. Also, he didn't even create Outer Heaven, his double did.

Just look at the Iraqi SCUD launchers during the gulf war, those things had damn every spec ops group the US and UK had looking for them 24/7 and they still didn't get eliminated.

Designed to combat all the knock off Metal Gear Rexs after their plans got put on the internet.

Still gets shit pushed in by Rex at the end of 4.
>>
>>382248665
Probably because of higher mobility plus mass production, but in reality they're pieces of shit.
>>
>>382249387
Well they ARE just knockoffs.

All evidence implies that REX was probably the greatest Metal Gear ever created before the concept was rendered obsolete and abandoned after MGS2. Gecko aren't proper Metal Gears and the thing Armstrong used at the end of Rising wasn't a proper Metal Gear either despite being called one. If Hal hadn't purposely created blatant design flaws, REX would have been unstoppable.
>>
>>382249410
They were designed to take down knock-off Metal Gears. To be honest, I'm sure that RAY would have been good enough to take down plenty of past Metal Gears. ZEKE, Sahelanthropus, TX-55 and D most likely would have been pulverized by RAY. REX, too, most likely would have been a sitting duck had Hal not been a Street Fighter fan.

Otacon is basically the greatest Metal Gear engineer who had ever lived, with his Metal Gear surpassing all previous Metal Gears.
>>
>>382249672
What was Excelsius even? This huge spider like thing with bladed appendages, really weird.

It all goes to show that Otacon is the best there is, though. Created the strongest and most beautiful Metal Gear.
>>
>>382250369
Excelsius was an "Unmanned Gear" designed to take out cyborgs, whose steadily dominating presence rendered Gekko obsolete. Unlike proper Metal Gears, which were basically designed to be nuke launch platforms first and foremost, Excelsius was designed primarily for field combat against cyborg PMCs. It was designed primarily for head-on warfare, so huge and overpowering that no matter how capable any cyborg was, they wouldn't be able to do anything to it. It wasn't a Metal Gear since it wasn't bipedal and it lacked a nuke, but it was called such to make it easier to sell as a weapon.

Didn't really work out so well considering one cyborg was able to do the job. And even then, its performance was ultimately outstripped by NANOMACHINES, SON.
>>
>>382251821
If Nanomachines are so mighty and powerful, why don't they combine them with Metal Gears?
>>
>>382244215
Doesn't the nuke not being a missile get around certain treaties or something? I fel like thats one of the points they made.
>>
>>382244215
The time-frame of the games usually put the metal gears above development of current technologies. ICBMs were in their infancy during MGS3, with most systems lacking the accuracy to target enemy missile silos and boomer subs had just barely been equipped with nuclear payloads. Even then, SSBNs were medium range and limited payload. Strategically, they were to be used in retaliation to a first strike and to compliment land based deterrent systems with their 200kt W58 warheads. In comparison, the B53 warhead on that era's US ICBMs had a 9mt payload.

So a mobile nuclear artillery platform could be a decisive blend of ICBM and SLBM technology at the time.

Plus the nuke the bad guys use in MGS3 to position the Soviet coup was a Davy Crockett style shoulder launched nuke. More utility than a suitcase nuke and outclassing its wimpy .19kt payload.

Now that you mention it, a Metal Gear game taking place on a submarine would be radical.

Because robots dont have veins the nanomachines can travel through
>>
>>382244426
Kojima is trying his hardest to tell you fuckers to stop idolizing/worshiping Big Boss at every turn and it wasn't getting through your fat skulls so he had to take more and more drastic measures.
