Was there ever a more ambitious game developer?
I know that their games are a buggy unfinished mess, that have to be patched and modded to work. But when they work, you can see so much untapped potential. Why did they fail /v/? Was it unrealistic ambitions, was it publishers breathing down their necks? Was it poor marketing?
Alk their games are sleeper hits, but why?

LGS
Troika failed for exactly those 3 reasons
>>382213990
I loved them op. I have played all three of their games multiple times. I would give a lot for Journey to the Center of Arcanum.

Yup, I still hope against hope that they stop being cunts and get to it. I'd even fund it in the scamstarter

Jokes on you, I browse/v/ from work. Can't watch videos, tho

the guy at the bottom of "what i expected" kinda fits the bill, since the devs deliberately took the piss out of the premise couple of times

so what? It won't matter if the amount of what they anounced to final result ratio will be the same, as compared to devs who just failed to meet their goals but "we honestly, genuinely tried, honest!"
>>382215445
that game had an amazing soundtrack. And not the usual v's amazing, when it's just a chiptune from anime rpg, but audiophile-tier amazing

something about the game's release date iirc, activision wanted them to release along-side Half-Life 2. Of course Half-life 2 will get all the attention instead and result in poor sales for VtMB
>>382215881
they fell for source engine "realistic face animations" meme - licensed when it was still in early stage of constant development, so every update would break something during in VTMB development (either scripts, sounds or animations). Plus, slow response time from Valve on troubleshooting. Developing a game on beta engine was slow pain in the ass, breaking all deadlines possible. Then they ran out of publisher's money
Final nail in the coffin was the intention of Valve of not letting to release any Source game before HL2, and then vtmp was overshadowed by HL2 and its own general unfinished buginess.
>>382213990
>Why did they fail /v/? Was it unrealistic ambitions, was it publishers breathing down their necks? Was it poor marketing?
literally all of these
People give obsidian shit for the way they handle these things, but we can't really blame them after what happened to troika and interplay. Seems like it's either rushed games for random publishers, jewing the kickstarters to eleven or becoming ea's puppet if you want to stay afloat doing rpgs.
>>382216026
>activision wanted them to release along-side Half-Life 2
>along-side half-life
How retarded can one publisher be. Good god.
>>382216189
Well 12 years later Gearbox made the same mistake with releasing Battleborn with ActiBlizzard's Overwatch
>>382216269
Battle-what..?
>>382216128
You forgot to mention that they were literally rewriting the engine, because they didn't like some stuff and wanted better lighting.

Opinion discarded
In my opinion troika was a proper underdog. They had to fight for every project and hope for.the best. On occasion they even started working on a game before securing the funding for it and working basically for free.
>>382214624
>>382214282
i'd fund the whole fucking game if i had the money
arcanum was in terms of story, plot, setting, writing, content, replayability and systems the very best 2D isometric RPG ever made
if it only would have had better combat, something similar to fallout tactics perhaps, it would easily be the best single player game of all time.
VTMB is an all time classic and another gold standard in CRPGs and both it and TOEE are the best ever videogame adaptations of their respective source materials. the CO8 modpack for TOEE, in my opinion, easily elevates the game to the levels of the infinity engine D&D games.
the fact that troika failed in spite of the outstanding underlying quality of their unpolished work really changed my perception of the videogames industry and the quality of the people that support it
>>382217362
>the fact that troika failed in spite of the outstanding underlying quality
>quality
Hahahaha, no. Their games were buggy and unfinished. When they are patched, they are masterpieces, but releasing unfinished product is distasteful. Same goes for old-school bioware
>>382217362
The story I heard was that Troika seemed like they were fucking about and weren't getting much done so the publisher had to send over a supervisor to essentially run the shop so the game would even being the state it was in on release.
When I read about it, it struck me as a somewhat similar (though not quite as severe) thing to L.A. Noire, where the people in charge of the dev team were so horrible to work with and bad at their jobs that the process of Rockstar getting them to finish the game was like pulling teeth, and afterwards nobody would be a publisher for the dev team because of the guy in charge.

>going from a linear 30 hour RPG to a full blown open-world RPG with over 100h of content

And now they're developing the FIRST ever open-world cyberpunk RPG. If that's not fucking ambitious, I don't know what is.
>>382215376
