It doesn't get better than this, video games peaked around

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

It doesn't get better than this, video games peaked around 17 years ago, and we'll never reach these heights because of the massive casualization and popularization of the medium that makes comics, movies etc. not look casualized in comparison.
>>
/v/ needs to come together and create a good game
>>
>>382209063
Maybe it was possible a few years ago, but now it's impossible because of how many plebs browse this board.
>>
>>382209063
You mean the nu/v/ that:

>Shitpost about TW3
>Shitpost about every old good game
>Say that Dishonored II is shit
>Praise LoL, Dota & HotS
>Was hyped for Overwatch
>Start a console war about every shit
>Shitpost about MHW

Yeah... nu/v/ will make the best gaem ever!
>>
>>382208821
bah, fuck it all. I have given up hopes of having a game like Deus Ex anytime in the future at all. The Fucks at Eidos Montreal don't know what they are doing anymore. DX IW feels more like a Deus Ex game than Human Revolution ever will.
>>
>>382209210
Dishonored 2 is shit, you faggot, and so is Dishonored 1.
>>
>>382209246
I always laugh when I see certain people claiming video games have yet to evolve as a medium and are progressing. It's obvious those people don't know jack shit about the medium, as it obviously peaked with Deus Ex.
There's one game I played this year whose first level gave me the feeling of Deus Ex's level design, it's called "Styx - Shards of Darkness". It's one of the best stealth games ever, definitely check it out.
>>
>>382208821
would any anon care to attempt to explain what it is about this game that has made it such a classic

i remember seeing ads of it in game magazines when I was younger, looked like another fps
>>
>>382209479
It's an outstanding of various genres, but what makes this game so good, in my opinion, is the level design which is so excellent and branching that I literally can't enjoy other games as much as before anymore, because I always feel limited when it comes to choices of approaching the levels. I just can't help but compare every other game's level design to Deus Ex.
>>
>>382209260
Maybe. But remove the action orientated gameplay and the good and evil choices, it is a good candidate for a Thief game.
>>
>>382209479
you can approach any level from any direction and there are tons of way to make progress. this game respects player's inteligence and expects you to improvise and solve puzzles on your own. a lot of games gives the same promises but hardly any delivers and it seems that deus ex delivers best.
>>
>>382209373
Yes, heard good things about Styx.

i loved game mechanics, by hated levels taking place in places such as caves, catacombs etc. were you supposed to sneak past some fucking demons, zombies, weird shit. i didnt like it, i prefered the urban areas such as mansions, streets.
>>
>>382209210
But anon
>TW3 is bad at many things and that may turn people off
>literally everyone knows they're trolla and no one ever responds to them
>Dishonored II is shit
>those faggots stay in their gay threads, I mean, what's the problem?
>literally shills and fags
>again, if you see it, you're one of them, because they stay in their own fucking threads
>what is MHW?
>>
>>382208821
/v/ hates western games, or anything that isn't japanese, so we can't do it.
>>
>>382209479
design was way ahead of its time maybe not even surpassed today. basically any method you can think of to pass through areas and obstacles is doable, if you have to reach the rooftop of a building full of enemies you can use explosives outside to boost your way up or simply stack a load of crates and skip it all.

even if you manage to glitch-kill important npcs the game just removes them from the plot.
>>

Deus Ex is my third favorite game of all time after System Shock 1 and Dark Souls 1.
what i didn't like about it was the skill leveling system (a criticism i share with System Shock 2) because i felt it distracted from the experience by artificially limiting, restricting, and undermining the player's own skill, like how you can't sneak attack someone from behind with a knife and insta-kill them because you didn't put enough points in melee weapons, this broke my immersion a little, and this is why i consider System Shock 1 the peak of the immersive sim formula.

You just gotta jump a few hoops instead if you don't have augs. Instead of backstabbing with a knife, aim for the back of the head with a crowbar. Instead of aug-jumping to windows, stack boxes. Instead of using the crossbow, attack them with a wet noodle. The game always lets you do anything and augs just make your life easier, with aug-exclusive areas being few and far from one another, with other means to access your objective being provided on-site like hazmats and whatnot

System Shock 2 + Metal Gear Solid + Thief 1/2 levels.

Has abit better combat then SS2 and you cant miskill so easily.
Sneaking is an option but not a refined as in MGS but has hacking and lockpicking to open alternate routes. Also dont forces the story down your throat like MGS does it.
Levels like Thief, multiple options, organic looking levels, secrets to explore.

Some RPG elements and quest. Hard and frustrating in the beginning, some things dont work as good.

Just try finding all the stuff in the first level.

So Deus Ex is literally your babies first videogame, doesn't surprise me much.

The first time I played this game I quit just before entering Hong Kong. I thought the game wasn't very good but after a year or so I tried it again with a different mindset and fell completely in love with it.

Ever since that happened I have a huge boner for Cyberpunk anything and really love the subjects those games touch. I also believe CB2077 might end up being better than Deus Ex.

On a different note, I thought Mankind Divided was utter garbage for a Deus Ex game and I really wish I could get my money back for that hot garbage.

>>
>>382208821
My primary issues with Deus Ex are that the gunplay isn’t good, enemies aren’t interesting, the stealth isn’t good, the hacking/lockpicking are one dimensional, there isn’t a significant platforming/area traversal element. Dialogue basically never constitutes a good gameplay challenge, and Deus Ex isn’t an exception there.

On the level of simply the game living up to what it is,the game doesn’t really care if you go lethal or nonlethal in any of the missions (after the third one it stops tracking the difference completely). The overall story arc is completely linear, you always have to betray unatco, you always get captured by gunther, you always break out of unatco, go to hong kong, infiltrate versalife, etc, etc. There are tons of invincible NPCs in many of the levels, especially the early ones. You’re required to kill multiple NPCs to proceed (even if there are clever workarounds for all but one of them).

I went into Deus Ex thinking, “Wow, I can do anything.” After learning more about the game, I realized, “Wow, I can’t do anything.” My opinion on the game changed over time as my opinions about what made a good game or not became more refined. Deus Ex isn’t deep. There’s a lot going on, but none of it is interconnected, meaningful, or challenging. Deus Ex is just a bad game.

I had my second ever playthrough of DX earlier this year, it's still so goddamn good. I think the final level is kinda dull compared to the rest of the game. Too much of a strange facility and not enough city roaming like in the earlier parts of the game.

>that chill and eerie feeling of the late 90s vision of cyberpunk future
>gusts of wind shaking the trees
>those sleazy streets of New York
>that gloomy cloudy sky

Fuck yeah. Though I do have to wonder why most of the decorative lamps were not on by default. For example the ones in the lobby of the NYC clinic. It's a dark hallway and all the lamps are off for some reason. Maybe the hobos like to sit in the dark?

This is correct, and I don't understand why it has this reputation.
But it is absolutely not a bad game. It's still great.

My favorite part about Deus Ex is the writing

The gameplay is so-so, but fun enough, but the atmosphere and story of the game is amazing

I like how it came out in the year 2000 and has ties to things like broad NSA surveillance which didn't really come to light to the public until many years later

This picture is an actual picture of Deus Ex's script. It's fucking huge. There are tons of dialogue options. Like look at this shit:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1b-bijO3uEw

It feels like there aren't that many games that have a really well written story these days. The only one I can think of that reminds me of it is The Last of Us and that still wasn't on the same level that is Deus Ex's writing.

Anyone else think so?

I don't think there's anything wrong with being content with a game even with its flaws. This board tries to force every game into being a Tortanic and its fucking annoying. There's not liking a game, and then there's being a perpetual cynic who can't enjoy anything. The amount of angry shitposting in Prey and Nier threads recently has been ridiculous.

Maybe I'm just getting older and I'm getting tired of fueling my existence with nothing but rage. Though I've always been able to enjoy Deus Ex, Thief, Quake, Morrowind as well as shit like Halo.

This is the thing, a lot of hackers were saying in the 90s 2000s that the internet was turning into what it is now, a perpetual warzone between competing governments (the idea that bashing on western surveillance is naive, the alternatives are worse, you can't put the nuclear weapon back into the bag now it's discovered, and artificial intelligence is a nuclear weapon) and corporations - but they were not a Reliable Source according to the media so no one listened. Sometimes the conspiracy theories are actually right all along.

>I don't think there's anything wrong with being content with a game even with its flaws. This board tries to force every game into being a Tortanic and its fucking annoying. There's not liking a game, and then there's being a perpetual cynic who can't enjoy anything.
I'm sick of the way people roll over for modern games, have some standards for christ sake. Anyone who isn't performing major mental gymnastics can see how fucked they.

People like Alex Jones have always been convenient memes, http://wikipedia.org/wiki/Useful_idiot in the same way as when liberals defend hyperconservative islamisation of western countries, because he's just SO ridiculous a clown that he makes it easy to joke about and not even consider when there is actually shady shit going on - Not as part of some vast conspiracy but just a distraction from actual corruption - Before youtube it was ufo magazines crazy tabloids etc
>>
>>382225932
Its not mental gymnastics, its simply not flipping your shit over newer games. Especially if its a new IP.

If its a newer game in a running series that's been casualized, then I'm with you, but flipping your shit and getting your hopes up is a good way to die sooner.

I have standards, I play fuckloads of Thief 1&2, Morrowind, God Hand, good shit. But I spend more time liking the things I like and looking for them in other games than getting dissapointed when I don't find them.

I dunno about you, but it's been very demoralizing to see what used to be 'crown jewels' of Conspiracy Theory proven true one after another -- remember when everyone thought Echelon couldn't possibly be a thing? And then Snowden's like "yeah, it's pretty much exactly like that" and people just shrug and Something Something Terrorism. Now the media are losing their goddamn minds and I've just stopped trying to guess whats waiting around the next bend. Interesting times indeed...

How come the augmented people in original DX are seen and described as these monstrosities and grotesque mockeries of human form, but in Human Revolution the augments look slick like sport cars? Denton brothers and Simmons were nano augmented and looked almost normal except for the glowing veins. DX:HR is a prequel anyway, so shouldn't the augmentations look ever more dated and more like literal machine parts? You'd think the hobos and street thugs would look like rusty car engines with faces, but nope. They all look like they were designed by Ferrari.

Picture related, that's what the people with cheap and outdated augmentations should look like.
>>
>>382209260
It's only fault, in both of them, is a poorly and obvious plot. Apart from that, the game is fucking solid.
>>
>>382227219
If HR is a prequel, then maybe the reason in the sequels they look worse is because of the drug addiction that was associated with auggies
>>
>>382227219
I think it's handwaved by designer augments disappearing after the incident or whatever.

Why would people protest and riot against people that look like this? Those augmentations are barely noticeable. They're so slick they look like gloves over natural hands. If they were skin colored, or if augmented people wore gloves and scarves over the obvious augmentations, why the fuck would people care?
It would make more sense if the augmented people in HR looked more like walking fridges, like Gunther. People fear the unknown, and Gunther looks barely human anymore, so it would make sense that people discriminate augs like that.

You could make the exact same argument about tattoos ten years ago and be met with a similar response: Some people are way too bothered about other people's choices in life, even (and specially) those that don't affect them in any way. This is born from preconceptions, religious concepts of bodily "purity" or simply fear of the false culture surrounding body modification.
And some people are just jealous of people who were literally built to do their job better than them.
>>

>And some people are just jealous of people who were literally built to do their job better than them.
Like what, moving heavy shit? A forklift could do that for cheaper than augs. HR gives you one chance to ask someone why they needed augs to do their job and they just deflect the question.
>>
>>382228170

I'd like a tattoo but I'd probably get bored of the design quickly and want a different one. I imagine I'd probably end up turning my body into a canvas. How some people go around walking with the same tattoo design for ages is beyond me.

- Movement was exactly the same as half life, standard FPS, doom was running around fast because it wasn't meant to be attempting realism, arcade style. Sure it wasn't Mirror's Edge, but no games had anything like interesting/inertial movement back then.

- no games had much physics back then and recoil is pretty much about it, half-life was exactly the same - even Operation Flashpoint came out a year after deus ex

- enemies were pretty easy, from playing it as a fucking 10 year old. Seriously.

- Aiming was absolutely fine too. The skill-based wobbling was exactly the kind of attempt to add realism like gun weight that you whined about.

Designer augments were manufactured by companies like Sarif and a whole bunch of others. After the "Incident", AFAIK, only Tai Yong Medical (TYM) remained, and absorbed Sarif and others. Now, TYM is pretty much what cheap chinese shit is to western stuff or japanese/s.korean tech - cheap garbage.

You can kinda see that crap starting in Mankind Divided - Marchenko being an example, or Harvesters in Human Revolution.
