Older JRPGs won't hold your hand much like newer ones do. They just plunk you down and make it obvious what you should do without telling you. The enemies you fight will be easy but there's no tutorials really. Just an easy fight at the start.

The battles in Mother 3 are actually hard since they're rhythm-based and some of the time signatures are absolutely wacky. If you want a good JRPG with a touching story and classic feel that doesn't go easy on you, play that.

None of those games have slow openings. Mother 3 has a short tutorial and then the story starts in full swing within 30 minutes. Chrono Trigger has a bunch of fun minigames you can spend time on and get acquainted with the world and the controls, and FF7 starts off with you bombing the shit out of a reactor with a bunch of battles and extremely brief tutorial. They're all snappy, so just fucking play one.

Chrono Trigger is short as fuck, like 20-25 hours. Longest scene is like 2 min.

Mother 3 is a bit longer, around 30 hours. Scenes are short normall but they're are a few longer ones, however the difference here is mother 3 actually has good writting.

Both are masterpieces, play them.

FF7 lets you skip every basic tutorial by dismissing them when the characters ask you about stuff and then concentrates the rest in the sector 7 slums as people you can talk to if you want.

Meant to type FF6 (VI). It's a lot easier to accept FF7 since the opening is action packed and the production values are so high.

6 has a pretty actiony opening too. You ride a bunch of mecha into a cave, slaughtering wildlife as you go, and find a strange crystallized monster that seems to recognize Terra. It's a fast opening. And then from there, you have a city escape. 6 is actually a game with a very constant rate of action.

Chrono Trigger is the standard for JRPG pacing. The carnival lets you run around and explore a meaningful environment at your own pace, getting your first optional taste of combat and even maybe some weird stuff you wouldn't expect. Your actions as a player in the intro scene even end up being referenced in the plot in an interesring way.

You can advance to the time machine as quickly as you wish, and then you're one brief spout of (interesting) exposition away from the first area of the game with enemies.

From then on, the story is minimally sandwiched between world exploration and dungeon diving, with a lot of the interesting stuff being told by the visuals and music of the different timelines you visit.
