You just have to remember that in most games all you really need is high damage followed by high speed. Any defensive or story things are completely optional and are only a crutch for worse players.

In DnD 3.5e, sorcerers and bard use charisma for casting spells instead of intelligence. This extends to games that use 3e or 3.5e, like NWN 1&2 and ToEE.

The answer is flavor. Why does everything have to be immensely useful and immediately comparable in terms of how badly you can beat some in-game AI. Why provide multiple dialogue choices if they all lead to the same destination in most cases. If a game provides a lot of ways to play a game, the best thing it can do is provide validity to even the most obscure choices. Fallout games excluding those from Bethesda were great at providing validation for player choice.
