Oh for the sake of curiosity, scroll down an you can find the pitch document for Cold Heart, the early version of Shattered Memories. It's an interesting case of "what could have been." http://www.silenthillmemories.net/sh_shattered_memories/arts_en.htm

If anybody wants I could story time that, or maybe one of the comics? Though Past Life is the only one of the SH comics I'd consider GOOD.

Hi, Literally just unzip the folder and click Silent Hill 2 directors cut. I guess I have the fog up a little high, his other instructions will change it closer to the original levels. Not terribly important but doable.

The only thing you should do is click Joy2Key first. Once the programs open is should translate well to a 360 controller.

Mount the ISOs of 2 & 3, and then run their installers like always.
The SH1 is a PS1 rip that you gotta emulate.
The "sh2proxy" is a all-in-one fix, that works as a no-cd crack as well. It is included in the pack.
If you use the NEW fix mentioned in the guide, you can use the sh2proxy's EXE as the no-cd crack!

In case you experience issues saving the game / not being able to edit the disp.ini, make sure the files aren't set to "Read Only", and run the game as Administrator.
If SH2 gets stuck in a black screen upon launch, close it and re-start it again.

SH2-4 do not support Xinput gamepads. Either use Xpadder, a DirectInput pad, or just play with KB+M.
You can now see some decent emulator settings for SH1 as well in the guide. If the image of the game does NOT fill your entire screen in fullscreen mode, check your plugin AND GPU control panel's image scaling settings!
Also give the new PGXP emulator a shot for a lot less wobbly PS1 graphics.

>>382051858
Pretty much this. Silent Hill perfectly captures that weird beauty in what's decayed or abandoned.
And if you're going for more realism, take into account how people would walk around in that world. Gameplay, it might make sense to design a level a certain way but you'll get a better consistency if the world feels like it was lived in.
>>
>>382044624
I feel like the Twin Perfect HD collection reviews shouldn't be included here since, even though they're a great dissection of the HD collection, this pastebin is of the most use to new players yet the videos spoil the games.

All Team-Silent's SH games make modern ""horror"" games seem and feel like unimaginative, predictable and patronizing trash.

Mate, it's the best game in the series. No, I'm not kidding you. No, I'm not nostalgia faggot.

I've literally replayed SH1 alone some 40+ times in the past years. SH2 gets close 2nd with some 30+ playthroughs.

SH1 just has a perfect balance of everything the series is known for, and many things that rise it above the sequels:

-Largest, most interesting and varied town sections.
-Best pacing out of the whole series; the slow beginning and Apartments in SH2 really grind people's gears.
-Great, varied major locations (School, hospital, sewers...)
-Better enemy and boss variation, all of 'em are fairly dangerous
-Nicely balanced difficulty, both action & puzzles.
-Scary as fuck, full of mindfuck parts as well
-Great visual design, full of small details.
-Awesome soundtrack and audiowork in general.

...just to name few.

it's both, as i said in my post. consider that the heavily detailed areas, like the shops or most church interiors in SH3, the opening scene in SH1, or many of the places where cutscenes take place in SH2 are generally single rooms or have many turns and corners to keep rendering simple.

then compare that to places like the outside of silent hill, which is largely flat with most detail being in the facades of buildings, and the large indoor areas (the gallows in SH2, the worm boss arena and mall interiors in SH3) are largely simple as well, being mostly empty rooms that manage to look great still with keeping your focus on setpieces instead of the relatively basic geometry and often further use of fog.

just putting things down to "They're good at art" is ignoring the work that the great programmers and level designers put into this

SH2 is the same thing though.

SH4 doesn't use this technique, which is why it looks relatively uglier.

it is the same in SH2 and 3. And quite a bit in 1 as well.
In all cases, they used excessive tessellation on environments to compensate the blocky per-vertex lighting on PS2. In short, the lighting was calculated only by the polygon's edges, which saved lots of processing power.

>>382061468
different anon here, I've seen that vid get posted for almost 2 years now, so it might be from an older build. Even then, the difference is a night & day, and a gigantic leap from the Alzheimers in an earthquake simulator level dancing we have had to deal with up until now. Not to mention it also cures the wavy TEXTURES in PS1 games too!

>>382061635
PS2 emulation sucks ass, requires much stronger PC, and much more tweaking. And even then, it may not work.

PC ports are legit PC games.
Its better counterpart is the per-pixel lighting, which the PC and Xbox ports use.

I'm about halfway through 2 and have experienced pretty consistent framerates, although I do have a pretty beefy PC. The only problem I've experienced is that awful "noise" and blocky filter they occasionally use during darker areas. I'm not opposed to downloading the PC versions, I just don''t want to work harder than a quick patch to get them working.
>>
>you will never EVER play SH1 for the first time again
Why even bother existing
>>
>>382062374
It's just a matter of dropping a few files into the game's directory, changing one file's extension, and optionally copying and pasting >>382049525 if you want.

No idea where you even got the idea that it'd take more than a literally unpacking a single fan-patch to game's folder to make the PC ports work on modern machines / look a bit better than usual.

The reason for the super detailed guides and shit is simply because some of us have been posting this stuff for years now, and there's been a few dozen too many rookie-level questions and / or desires for more info. Like some literal "what do I do with an ISO??" -tier stuff.

And like said, the PC ports are feather light by modern standards. A goddamn 2011 model craptop with mere i3 CPU and Intel HD Graphics 3000 can run SH2-4 at HD resolutions.

is unpacking a Zip file to install folder "too much work" ?

Are the games after 4 worth playing? Seems like everyone agrees that the last good one was 4

Back in they day when i was younger and didnt understand english too much, i saw Silent hill 2 intro, you know which one, where James talks with Maria and stuff

And with my imagination i thought silent hill 2 was about a man, james, who ended in silent hill (it's a secuel to the cult silent hill and stuff), saw a lot of bizarre shit, meet a girl named Maria and when he escaped, he tried to convince everyone the things he saw. People thought he was mad and due to that, James ended in jail. James, who ended up convincing himself that what happened wasnt real, meets a girl, his lawyer. This girl say stuff only james during his silent hill trip, and ends up asking the lawyer "how do you know about that!? are you...maria?"

yeah, i was kinda an autist as a kid

I actually like Origins
It sticks pretty close to the original SH formula as opposed to 4 and pretty much everything else that came after it
Besides it has tons of unlockables which makes it fun as fuck to play again like night vision goggles and costumes that change the gameplaly
>>
>>382063427
I thought Shattered Memories was okay. You can play through it in an afternoon.
>>
What do I do about sound? When I change the options in the in-game menu, they revert as soon as I leave the menu.
>>
>>382063030
That's why I was asking, boyo. I wanted to know IF it was easy enough to be worth doing this as opposed to the ROM's I already have downloaded. And that seems to be the case. I'm going to finish 2 on PCSX2 but I'll be playing 3 and 4 on PC.
>>
>>382063670
That actually seems like an interesting story, retard.
>>
>>382054647
SH2 has overrall better story and soundtrack.
But it's inferior to SH1 in scare factor, atmosphere, sound work (i dont know how you call that. Sound system, i guess?)

At least you will remember both games for different reasons.
SH1 is personally my favorite because it was the first i played, i shat bricks, and i just love it.

But SH2 story and music are so powerful too.
>>
Is anyone working on fixing the lack of soft shadows in SH2's PC port? It's really the only thing it's lacking at this point.

Not really the best with silent hill lore and haven't played the games in years (and even then i was pretty fucking young.) but 1 and 3 are more to do with the cult and Alessa right?

Was Alessa bedridden the entire time? If not I'd imagine they'd move her around in a wheelchair considering how fucked up she was. Just a thought.

Or empty wheelchairs in creepy places are just creepy as fuck, hell if I know.
>>
Why are these threads so comfy?

>>382067870
Because we have no Silent hill shitposters and the only thing that comes close are 2fags
>>

According to some specialists, the shadows are the same, the reason they look like that on PC is because of the resolution. The PS2 shadows looks soft because the game runs at a really low resolution so the edges are blurred.

There is some guy working on reverse engineering SH3 and making the engine run on modern APIs, so it would be possible to add newer higher quality shaders and effects, soft shadows included. The project is going pretty slow and probably will never see the light of day, but if it does finished one day and he proceeds to work on SH2, then it would be possible.

So there is hope that one day we could get the definitive versions of SH2 and 3 on PC. There is hope.

I think it's added to look creepy. Alessa is in a wheelchair at the end of the game, but the gurneys with bloodied bodies on it are not related to her, unless she was kept near a morgue or something.
