Remember when Minecraft had potential way back, /v/?

Imagine for a moment that you've been given creative control over Minecraft in its infancy, What would you do differently? What direction would you take it in?
>>
no hunger bar

Vaster landscapes.

Better building tools.

Things to put in your buildings (industrialcraft-type stuff but without autistic hackjobbing and less OP), as well as a metric fucktonne of decorative items.

Ways to automate the boring shit.

Real trains. Real boats. Real planes.

A continental scale. Scarce resources needed for high-tier shit should be literally hundreds of kilometres away, thus giving trains, boats, and planes a use, as well as incentivising multiple sites to manufacture things on-site if they're volume-reducing products, as well as freight to ship it back.

And finally, AI-controlled factories that you direct centrally.

Endgame objective is to ship resour....

FUCK. I'M MAKING FACTORIO.

Add in an actual game to compliment the building, basically content like Terraria, and then add in an actual combat system like Cube World tried to do.

Not really rocket science.

Actually make it about survival instead of autistic building. More of a roguelike like don't starve

But honestly, that is just my own preference. If I am honest I think Minecraft is perfect as the kind of game it tries to be and its definitely a better game for kids than the shit I played back when I was one.

This, The oceans need to be larger, the plains need less variation in height, the mountains need to be taller and water should not always spawn at sea level, there should be lakes and rivers at different altitudes.

Make it Terraria.

From the get-go I knew Notch was a lazy fuck and I just wanted real mod support. Never happened.
>>

>>
>>382042570
I was always just into building aspect anyway, so back when there as nor Creative I just used third party programs to give myself as much shit as I needed. Flying definitely killed some of the comfynes though, even if it did make building large constructions 100 times more bearable.
>>
>>382041370
This so fucking much.
All it did was add a chore to the base gameplay. It punishes free exploration by requiring you focus on either hunting or farming.
>>
>>382042964

idk if it was a mod but I remember being able to choose how big the oceans were and how much height variation there would be in the world gen
>>
>>382041048
Are there any mods that let me easily pick and customize what features I want when creating a world? i.e. no hunger bar, lots of trees, no creepers, limited iron, etc.
>>
>>382041048
Well, first off I wouldn't have changed terrain generation to what it is now. I would have kept the fantastical floating stuff we would usually get and also make it so we would get real mountains and not whatever we have now.

I would have an option for torches to burn out and need relighting as well as making if so you could get a lantern for a more permanent and better source of light, but this would be a personal light and not something you could place.

Hunger would also be optional for those that didn't like the system.

Some kind of rare resource that would give you an incentive to make better mining tools as well as changing ore generation to be more true to real life, so to give you a reason to use the Nether teleporters as well as a Minecart system to take lots of resources from your mines around the map back to your base.

>>
>>382041048
Honestly the biggest strength and weakness of Minecraft is that it never decides whether it's a survival/exploration game with creative elements or a creation game with survival/exploration elements.

I think at this point the creative elements are the only thing keeping the game alive at this point. I think that the base gameplay systems would need a bit of a revamp in order to better facilitate deeper exploration. Meanwhile, if you want a more creative game you'd likely want more options for building cooler shit.
>>
>>382041048
Does console/win10 versions even have that much draw distance?
>>
Is minecraft for android all right? I feel like sinking some time in this autism fest again, but I have too much better stuff to do when I'm at home.

>I would have an option for torches to burn out and need relighting as well as making if so you could get a lantern for a more permanent and better source of light, but this would be a personal light and not something you could place.

This /was/ the plan at one point, but enough people complained about the idea pre-update that Notch backpedaled on it. Or he just said he was going to, and never actually did it. Take your pick.

Interesting that we still got saddled with the hunger bar though.

Player names are only visible when within 5 tiles, and when you have line of sight.
Want to find your friends? Learn to use a map and stick together bitches.
Getting lost could actually be lethal if you are stranded in the wild.

Keep hunger. Keep thirst. Make meter loss based on both fixed time rate, physical exertion, and biome temperature.
More play on temperature, exhaustion from exposure. No more of this "I can run day and night nonstop forever" bullshit.

Make it so food spoils after a certain amount of time, and introduce rats which will go after chests+boxes and eat your food.
Now cats actually have a purpose, and you have to be mindful about more things than monsters.
No more bullshit waiting in an impenetrable base forever.
Survival means upkeep.

Make animals more wild like; as soon as they see or hear you, chances are they will run. Make trapping+hunting more necessary.

Introduce illness, and herbal remedies made from flowers and certain powders.

Distinguish between torch light and natural sunlight.
Crops only grow in sunlight.

Seasons; spring, summer, winter, fall.
Different crops have different seasons they grow best in.
Depending on the biome, little to no crops grow in certain seasons like summer or winter due to temperature extremes.

Occasional extreme weather; flooding, lightning storms forest fires, high winds that can damage structure, earthquakes, ice storms,

Many many more ocean creatures and life like coral.
Boats that are actually boats and not shitty little boxes.
Airships as floating boats.
Cannons.

>Dynamic lighting.
>More biomes (floating islands, volcanic/ashlands, canyons)
>Fully customisable terrain generation (e.g. biome size, biome filtering, terrain extremity), including floating sky worlds.
>Better/more varied terrain generation and bigger terrain in general. Bigger biomes, mountain ranges, valleys, canyons, rivers, deeper oceans, etc.
>More variation/difference in biomes, using more varieties of plants and creatures (instead of fucking cows and chickens forever) plus better use of texture shading and more colour/texture variations on common blocks.
>More weather and better weather systems which also change depending on biome.
>Better combat. Different attacks and weapons, defensive abilities.
>Non-retarded AI that can take advantage of these improvements.
>Shitloads more creatures, both as ordinary animals and monsters.
>A solution for connecting/powering mechanisms that isn't autistic and a chore to use like redstone dust.
>Proper Survival mode where your location is attacked each night by increasingly powerful waves of monsters.
>Proper Adventure mode with actual stats, leveling, dungeons, treasure, bosses and improved purpose of NPCs/Towns.
>Optional Hunger.
>Some sort of town sim mode where the objective is to build a town and manage villagers.
>Changing, refining and expanding activities like Brewing, Enchanting, Fishing and Farming so they aren't buttfuck retarded like they are now.
>Less crafting retardation like requiring rare items for simple objects like sticky pistons, or flat out being uncraftable like saddles.
>More base materials and craftable items in general, including simple decorative stuff such as chairs, tables, etc.

For some reason they decided to go in the "adventure/RPG" direction (in a really half-assed way I might add) instead of focusing on building and crafting and world generation.

Seriously though, you make a good point with the building tools and decorative items. I don't think big endgame stuff like entire economies would make much sense in the vanilla game since it's quite small-scale most of the time, but I'd love to see more options for building creatively. We still don't have a lot of really basic blocks in vanilla; stuff like vertical slabs or stairs, different shades of stone brick, etc.

Lots of cool ideas here.

Some of it... eh some of that shit just wouldn't work in Minecraft. I'm not saying they're bad ideas, but as it stands the overhaul needed to do autistic shit like make trees """fall""" over when the bottom block is chopped would be autistic. Imagine the ugly model of those retarded trees """falling""" (the blocky shit model tilts sideways and breaks into blocks). Same with sand and water physics. Water I could see being interesting, but sand would just be autistically annoying. Some of those things you named actually happened. They gave mobs random armour. They added hints for building shit in the last update. It's baked into the inventory UI.

I think weather patterns, Aggressive villages, Improved AI, Larger trees, Improved fishing, Building towns for NPC's, and more traps could definitely improve the experience. I don't understand how updates in Minecraft are so slow. It's been 7 fucking years. Minecraft has been out an entire console generation with so few large updates. Better now than it was before the M$ buyout though.

>>
>>382041048
ok fuckers, here's a simple explanation. Minecraft never really had more potential than what it became.

the biggest hindrance is the fact that its combat is melee-focused in a first-person game. It doesn't work, period. no, condemned is not an example of it being good. It does not fucking work. it can at best be tolerable.

second, the face that the game is "survival"-based means that there's little in the way of progression. diamonds are the best thing and you can get them 10 minutes into a new file.

these two problems are so central to minecraft that it basically only leaves the building, and the building is basically as good as it can be. just adding more stuff to the game doesn't make it better, since at this point more items would cause a ton of bloat in your inventory and actually make the game worse. (the recent minecraft updates already do this with all the useless decorative blocks, mods also take this to an extreme)

with all of this in mind, really the only thing they could do better is the world generation, with more structures and more interesting visuals when it comes to the biomes WITHOUT adding more useless blocks like they've been doing. still, even the most interesting world generation would not make the game as good as /v/ says it could have been.

tl;dr: minecraft is fundamentally flawed in a way where it could not realistically be better than it already is.
>>
>>382049139
With the trees falling I don't mean having an animation play out with the tree block randomly falling into place.

I mean do it like the papyrus thingy where if the root node is destroyed the rest just deteriates into pickup.
Sand would definately be annoying but that's the point, same thing with the flooding. In the past with infinte water it was actually scary to mine, if you were not carefull you could flood it and kill yourself. now it's the most boring process ever.
>>
>>382049565
>biggest hindrance is the fact that its combat is melee-focused in a first-person game

You need more experience with video games and combat systems. Leave the board, go play games.

I didn't have internet for a year back in 2009. When I finally got some in 2010, I saw this thing called Minecraft and didn't understand what the hell it was. I kept away from it until last year when I gave it a go.

That was probably the first time I stayed up until morning playing a game since 2003. A week later, I got into modded MC.

Only time I ever had fun with Minecraft was the few times I played with people

In fact, /vp/ had a server thing going on back in 2014 with some mod that turned Minecraft into Pokemon and it was probably the most fun I had with a game in recent years since it was like a comfy Pokemon MMO. Everybody building towns and running businesses like writing books, crafting pokeballs, delivering mail.

It's been a long long time since i played minecraft, and it's been one of my go to game for a while. I wasn't very much into game development back then, but looking back at Minecraft.. The hell, they're SO SLOW with their update and item/mob addition in general, it's like the easiest game to dev on yet they are doing no change at all.
Best update was 1.4.2 imo it brought so much content.

I still love this game.

Continue the original idea which was pretty much dwarf fortress in 3d. Somewhere along the way they seemed to have completely forgotten this and decided not to add anything fun.

Where are the roving nomads? Why were pigmen and zombie pigmen never fleshed out? Where is the meaningful wildlife? Why can't the hostile mobs actually have societies instead of just being there to merely attack the player?

I heard brief mention of Minecraft from like 2 friends and thought it was some weird mining based Starcraft clone, then I looked up this video and it blew my mind and I ended up downloading a pirated copy. Played that with a friend for like an hour and got lost, he told me the official version just added compasses so I ended up buying it.

Pretty sure I convinced at least 20 people to end up buying the game, for better or worse.
>>
>>382064810
I had used a pirated copy up until the Halloween update whenever that was.
Notch said if you bought it before that update you were guaranteed every update for free (implying there might be paid DLC).
Also he was going to jack up the price if you bought it after the update so I pulled the trigger.

Focus more on AI and world building.

Let's face it. There's no reward to Minecraft. There's no avenue for people to herald you as a hero for your potato garden... You can't even sell the crops!

I would have introduced a basic trade system into alpha, and I would have given cartoony explanations for failing to live up to the supply and command you produce....

Don't give enough potatoes? Well, the town is pretty pissed....
And they show up to your shack with pitchforks!

Reason shit doesn't work in sandbox games is they're so empty and you end up having to tell people what you did with empty stories....

If the villagers can't eat they should kill you so they can!

That'd be a pretty good story to tell at the water cooler, and you'd probably not sound so autistic too!

Simple shit.
>>
>>382068582
You fundamentally misunderstand the appeal of Minecraft. Your suggestions are awful and your spacing is cancer, but I don't think I can even fault you because you seem legitimately and fully autistic. Have a nice day.

One thing that could benefit from the trading system is if you could do that for emeralds, and keep the process going. One farmer could value carrots, another potatoes, beetroot, etc. Hell, beetroot has to be the most useless crop in the game after the poison potato, which could be a rare trade for a good piece of equipment or diamonds.

Is this bait? I googled it and didn't find a reddit post.

The game needs more mystery and unknown. More than a dozen or so different types of randomized dungeons. You never really face any real dangers other than the random spawning mobs, nothing evil ever follows you back from one of your adventures, so there's no point in building a fortress. Bedrock is always where it is, you can probably hit it around 20-30 minutes of playing, and there's nothing in the world that's ever lower than that. They could do a lot more if they wanted to.

>Better building tools
This is actually one of the things I think Minecraft is brilliant for in its simplicity. Left click to destroy, right click to create. And there's no ambiguity: whatever you're facing with whatever you have equipped dictates the outcome when you click one of those two buttons. It's so simple a toddler could figure it out. I believe that simplicity has been an instrumental part of its success.

Many other crafting games I see overcomplicate the in-game building, with menus and other abstractions. Yes, they're more powerful, but they're also more abstruse, and hence less accessible. Minecraft is direct, physical, and intuitive. The basic controls can be grasped by pretty much anyone in just a few minutes. It's hard to improve on that.

You'd be making the world 100x the size in memory and on-disk if you did that, though. I think that's one of the major limiting factors of doing something like this. You'd need to keep the worlds fairly small to compensate.

I don't really think Minecraft could have been "saved" in the sense you people are talking about.

It's suppose to be a dig-and-build simulator and even in it's current state it does that pretty well. Actually so well that it's considered the peak of the genre.

I play it every now and then but I'll be the first to admit that I get swiftly bored. It's an okay little timewaster that's PERFECT for wasting time, but not much more. And I honestly don't see how it could be anything more.

It's like playing with Legos. It's creative, but best done in a social setting. It's fun, for a while, until you realize you're just putting the same pieces into different combinations.

Firstly, since it's in its infancy, immediately begin plans to scrap java once I make enough money to hire coders with actual talent. I'd follow the same content progress plan actual minecraft had but the game would have actual meaningful loot, and wouldn't suffer from corporate investor interests wanting the game to stay a shallow puddle of autismal lego building forever.

-make mining more fun by allowing weak sections in rock be able to be tunneled through easier, and give the player active skills instead of gay weapon enchantments.
-Speak of that I'd scrap the enchanter system entirely, fuck that business. Now you can only find enchanted armor as a rare drop or on a book making them worth MUCH more and making your equipment unique. This means things like Fire, power, and sharpness can only be found through treasure hunting, rare enemy drops etc
-Expand the monster beastiary vastly
-fix the existing monsters by give them new abilities (spiders cling to ceiling, skeletons take cover behind rocks, zombies can lunge and crawl etc etc etc)
-redo the nether again, and add something aside netherrack and lava, maybe make some burnt tree forests, hell caves with lava trolls etc.
-underground structures would make sense and there'd be a lot more types of them. and they wouldnt be broken trash like mineshafts and strongholds
-never EVER do the shit combat update we have now, at least in its current form. Cooldowns are fucking gay, speak of that.
-No fucking stamina from hunger, instead food can give you different temporary buffs weaker than potions

Continuing my autism with the next post.
>>
>>382043981
Youtube, popularity.
>>
>>382092653
-I'd use the worlds height to my advantage since it wouldnt be limited by java's autism, and make the world actually deeper than fucking hitting bedrock after digging 50 or so blocks which is EXTREMELY LIMITING. So the world height would be somewhere around 400 or so deep.
-I'd make TNT and bombs more common to make so digging/tunnelling and getting into the earth would be easier at the same time.
-unique weapons and armor and new accessories you cant craft on your own but have to track down or find a enemy carrying it. And taking a que from Terraria some equipment would give you special abilities like long jumps, wall clinging, wall climbing, slow glide (eliminating the need for fucking Elytra's autism) and doublejumps and speed boots.
-move the forest mansions to a reasonable fucking range, you shouldn't have to go out to fucking 40,000 god motherfucking damn blcoks to find one
-use the god damn empty sky to my advantage and add a sky islands
-Get rid of the whole motherfucking concept of the end as it is, and instead making it transform into that sky realm or w/e that was we had a long time ago. and Make the end cities into holy kingdoms without the fucking pointless and irritating enemies that shoot the gay balls at you that make you float.
-The carriable lanterns and ziplines notch's fat ass promised us

I could probably name more.

Minecraft is a 3D building program with a survival game mode shoehorned in. There is also enormous modding scene for when you get bored. If you gave some need from /v/ control over the base game, he would ruin it with 'muh hardcore gameplay'. There are literally thousands of Minecraft mods and separate games with or without blocks that focus on 'muh hardcore gameplay', and none of these ever came close to the base Minecraft in terms of popularity.

one of the things MC did right was that super rare mushroom biome with the weird cows, and even that felt like it could've been more
fuck
>>
>>382041048
All you need to do is design Minecraft like a game.

Once you have a wheat crop and a set of stone tools, literally nothing stands in your way. You can hack down hundreds of zombies with nothing but wood swords. You can use a cobble mold the build a Nether portal and walk around freely with nothing but the shirt on your back. You can run around and punch cows and never starve, you can bypass every pre-designed puzzle more easily than you can solve them, you can dig up dirt and pillar up and down every obstacle.

There's no challenge or checks to the player's power of any kind. The game is fundamentally fucked.
>>
>>382093387
that shit was brought over from dwarf fortress, and in DF, IIRC, the night spawning monsters are just a placeholder mechanic to force players to sleep indoors

in MC the night monsters are pretty much pointless as in most cases you only are worried about them for the first few nights, after that you either skip the night or spend it inside your impenetrable fortress

this means that the difficulty curve is actually backwards, putting the hardest part (surviving first night) right at the beginning, and then, pretty much no challenge, just grinding
>>
>>382043294

Survival is still piss-easy, though.

Beating a game on a harder difficulty usually gives you a bragging rights reward of some kind, or lets you see additional content, or lets you play an enjoyable game longer.

Minecraft has zero challenge to anyone who actively plays video games, no matter what your skill level is or what scenario you're put in. Even zombies in full diamond are nothing more than an inconvenience.

Also, Creative has all the content in the game from the get-go.

Mo creatures nighttime feels as tough as vanilla nighttime should feel, but even then you can cheese the manticores that can fly faster than your computer can render them and werewolves that are pretty much invincible unless you get a weapon from another mob by just going under water. I feel like a fucking crocodile every time I do any kind of PvE in this game.

There's no accomplishment if it can be got on a menu though. It's not difficulty but time that's the deciding factor. Why waste the time?

This is what I'm getting at. Waste all that time holding a key? Or get everything from the get go? Decisions decisions.
