What did you play, when you had no/slow internet/were australian?

I grew up with internet and still did that shit and played games like UT99 single player.

I used to download the new levels every month when I could.

used to spend a year work and travelling with just my DS and a flashcard with a handful of homebrew games on it (most of which were garbage). didnt bring any normal games because i was brain dead.
no PC and no money so i couldnt get more. i knew POWDER like the back of my hand back then.

There was something I used to play where you controlled a rocket/landing craft type thing trying to navigate through levels.

Is there a name for things that a lot of people do despite never having been taught or shown how to do it before? I used to those draw random scribbles in the bottom left in Paint and use the paintbucket on the negative space and I know several friends who did the same, but we all came up with the idea to do so by ourselves with no outside influence.
