Serious answer:

Dark Souls 2 is a very controversial game.

It does some very different things from Dark Souls 1, which make a lot of people really hate it.

If you imagine a tree, with Demon's Souls as the roots, Dark Souls 1 as the trunk, Dark Souls 2 on one branch, and Dark Souls 3 + Bloodborne on the other branch, you will get the idea of why people don't like it.

Some of the changes are minor, but really annoy people, for instance instead of traveling over an interconnected world, you travel vast distances across a country over what appears to you, to be a very short tunnel or elevator. This breaks immersion for some people. Some changes are bigger, the combat is much slower than Dark Souls, whereas Dark Souls 3 made combat much faster. The lore also annoys people, as the theme of Dark Souls 1 and 3 is "Humanity" while the theme of Dark Souls 2 is "Curse," and lots of things explained in 2 are directly contradicted in 3.

Not all of the changes are bad. For example, in Dark Souls 2 you can cancel out of being summoned in someone other than your friend who you have on chat summoned you, which you can't do in 3. You can leave much longer messages with your soapstone, and you get to enchant weapons much sooner into the game than 3.

Neither of the above are comprehensive lists of the good and bad features.

In any case, if you never played Dark Souls 1, you will probably greatly enjoy the game from a game-play perspective. You will not understand the multiple, deeply layered references to Dark Souls 1 in the game, but you don't need to play at all in order to enjoy the story or the game. Once you play Dark Souls 1 you will have a much deeper understanding of the story. Dark Souls 3 however, you will probably be utterly lost without playing Dark Souls 1, since it is basically a remake - that's how similar they are.

Also, make sure you buy the Scholar of the First Sin edition. It comes with DLC.

DS1: Early game plagued by twinks, due to the fact that you can get unlimited upgrades as long as you don't increase your level. People will invade you with end game weapons and one hit kill you. Netplay is also broken as shit, and you need a third party mod to connect 100% of the time.

DS3: Still very popular, thus non-stop invasions, (actually I think it's one every 10 minutes) especially in the two places with invasion oriented factions.

Dark Souls 1 is more of an experience. You'll discover all kinds of cool shit and lore and interesting places. Definitely more complete game.
But I still play Dark Souls 2 more. I'd say it's the better game when you just want to roll up a cool looking character and kick some ass.

Other Souls games give you the option of using fists and such, but they are complete dogshit.

Get DS1 and DS2 Scholar.

For me it was how linear it was. Almost every shortcut was just a boss hallway with a couple of dudes in they way, and after every boss the next way to go was right in front of you. The other thing is that, while the places were definitely more carefully crafted and detailed than in Dark Souls 2, they were the most standard fantasy places of all time. DS2's DLC is 60% of the game. All the best places and bosses are there.
The base game content is absolutely miserable and vanilla DS2 is even worse.
And the ringed City did finally explain the Dark sign. Even though that wasn't necessary at all, because the story in Souls games was never about getting concrete answers.

Most melee weapons in DS2 (except Black Knight Greatsword master-race) are fucking trash, and not because of the stats. Non-slashing, non-thrusting weapons have like 30% chance to hit a moving enemy, hammers are not worth dumping strength into until much higher levels & when you get there, who the fuck cares, greataxes suck dick, boss weapons are a waste of souls, ultra great swords are slow and you can't hit non-giant enemies, most spears have horrid move sets, and power stancing is the gayest thing since Phil Fish.

That being said, I've played the shit out of DS2, and you should too.
