That isn't what makes Lovecraft "scary". I say "scary" because Lovecraft's works aren't meant to spook you in the traditional sense, but rather they are supposed to make you realize how absolutely infantile and insignificant our existence is, and that there might exist beings out there, in the darkness of space, that dwarf us so completely that our simple minds are unable to even grasp such vastness.
Lovecraft's monsters and gods are just cardboard cutouts used as a means to deliver the real existential spooks of his stories, the ones that will stick with you for a long time because of their implications, rather than being grotesque alone.
