How come people are going absolutely crazy over NES/SNES classic but no one gave a shit when Sega did it first?

Is Sega really that dead in today's consumer minds?

I know /v/ loves to be contrarian for the sake of it, but the truth is that Sega has always been the second string choice or the poor kid option. Its library couldn't compare with the SNES at all, and the Dreamcast's shit hardware and games finally killed the company. And good riddance.

I own this and it's okay if you have controllers and cartridges which I do.
>>
It's been said already, not only is the emulation poor, but playing legit games from it is also shit. The sound quality is utter shit, it sometimes even has trouble reading a cartridge.

If the NES mini also played cartridges, I would have put in the effort to get one, as my NES is starting to show wear and I'm likely going to have to buy replacement parts.
>>
Yeah I've seen these around for years but people act like Nintendo did something special.

The best official emulator box was that Neo Geo thing. It was like a switch before the switch came out.
>>
People are only buying the NES and SNES mini because NOSTALGIA.

If they made it actually look like a megadrive/genesis like back in the good old days rather that this piece of shit it would see more interest.
>>
>>382012201
>Dreamcast's shit hardware and games finally killed the company.
Bitch, please. I was a gigantic Nintendo fan boy and even I knew this was false. This isn't just looking back at it now: At the time when the Dreamcast was failing everyone was surprised because of how good the library was, how good the hardware was, how cheap it was, and how easy pirating was for it.
>>
>>382011352
I had one and it was shit, the controllers used IR blasters or something so they had to be pointed at the TV to use

It doesn't even sound right. It sounds like someone botched the conversion to a MIDI, then used the sound fonts from the sound chip but not the chip itself, and then recorded it through a phone speaker.

That's even worse: you're a hipster fag. "Check out my cool NES; it's geek chic!"

Yep. They feel cheap and the wireless connection is nothing better than a tv remote control, meaning you have to keep it aimed EXACTLY at the sensor at all times for it to work. Even then, the signal still drops inputs.

Nothing close to the quality of the nes classic Nintendo released a few months ago.

The Genesis, Saturn and Dreamcast all had comparable libraries, but starting with the Saturn Sega slowly lost all media and thus consumer attention, making it lose the brand that it very briefly had during the early 90s.
>>

put out a Saturn mini

If they ever release this I will just wire Nintendo my bank account details and tell them to take as much as they want.
>>
Because the Sega one had 25 games and then 55 shitty homebrew throwaway trash like tic-tac-toe and checkers.

Beyond that the choice of games was FUCKING TERRIBLE. Streets of Rage 1, not 2 which is STILL considered to be the peak of the genre? ESWAT? No Treasure games whatsoever?

Also for fuck's sake, the sound on this thing is absolutely terrible and anyone who actually has knowledge of what the originals sounded like will probably want to vomit. The 'Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection' on PS3 and 360 that sold over a million copies is far superior in every way.
>>
>>382011352
The Sega one was very low quality and only had composite video. The Nintendo one had HDMI and a bunch of other features. For $60 it was really good quality.
>>
>>382012492
The Dreamcast was a piece of garbage.
An incredibly uncomfortable controller that was too big for most children to use where the wire came out the damn BOTTOM of the thing.
It makes goddamn lawnmower noises anytime it has to read anything from the disc.
The library consists mostly of hilariously janky weirdo shit like Seaman and Shenmue, or mediocre arcade ports, or 3D games that have aged awfully.

Also aside from Dynamite Cop 2, literally every Dreamcast game worth actually playing has been ported elsewhere.
>>
>>382011352
Maybe if Sega still made games other than Sonic shit people would remember them. Like why is there no new OutRun game? Space Harrier? Crazy Taxi?
>>
>>382016947
Why would you need a gamecube mini, most of the Gamecube games were going for 1-5 dollars and that was just a year or so ago. I wound up getting 99% of all worthy titles and the ones I missed were ported to the Wii.
>>
>>382017787
This. Also it had no 2nd analog stick. How was it supposed to survive that gen?
>>
>>382018141
They could have just added them later like Sony did with the Playstation controller.

Still, the damage is done when your controller you launch with is as inconvenient as possible and just about impossible for children, the target audience, to use. Even The Duke was more fucking user friendly.

Also worth mentioning is that Sega had three (THREE!) failed consoles in a row before the Dreamcast, they had no quality left with their brand anymore.
>>
>>382017787
>An incredibly uncomfortable controller that was too big for most children to use where the wire came out the damn BOTTOM of the thing.
This was the real Dreamcast killer for me. I mean, what the fuck were they thinking? Ever try playing the Dreamcast for more than 15 minutes at a time? It actually actually hurts your hands and causes blisters unless you hold it in a very awkward manner. If a video game console literally hurts to play, there is a serious problem.
>>
>>382012987

They use IR to communicate with the console, which is slow even when working perfectly, so you get input lag. Because it is IR, you also have to keep the controller perfectly still and pointed at the console at the right angle for the IR to connect. It is a fucking dollar store piece of crap.
>>
>>382011352
>Sega did it first?

Sega never released a retro console. It was some chinese company who made those bootlegs
>>
>>382016072
I was a huge dream cast pirate back when it was still alive. I remember downloading 30 parts of a game overnight and then burning it to a cd. I got in before self booting games were popular. It was neat that with some games you could change the music with whatever you wanted.
>>
>>382011459
This. Maybe Sega will take a more serious shot at it someday, but these are just cheap licensed things. I was kinda hyped for the NeoGeoX at first, but it turned out to be shitty as well.
>>
>>382018959
Motherfuckin BOOTleg fireworks
>>
>>382011459
Let's not forget that it doesn't even have HDMI-Out, the reason why most hipsters flocked to the NES Mini. Most people are too lazy to buy a Framemeister or mod their old consoles.
>>
>>382018880
If that controller gave you blisters or hurt your hands, you should stop gaming now and go exercise
>>
>>382011805
Oh dear... looks like those youtube videos "in g major" fad of years ago
>>
>>382019248
Gripping the controller like a naturally would caused my knuckles to rub up against the hard plastic while playing. To spare my fingers, I had to grip in an awkward manner to even play the games. The design of that controller was terrible.
>>
>>382019486
It's pretty obvious your never touched a dreamcast bro. If using a kids toy hurts you, you need to stop playing games and exercise
>>
>>382017787
The problem here is your baby hands.
Also the 23 game launch in the US alone makes a better library than both xbox and trashcube.
>>
>>382019932
>shittalking the Xbox when that's where all the Dreamcast games that were in development went and the thing is basically the Dreamcast 2
>>
>>382019486
You must have fatty sausage fingers.
>>
>>382019932
Obviously I'm able to play a Dreamcast fine now.

But try giving the thing to any fucking 6 year old that isn't an Andre The Giant tier mutant. When the thing came out I remember going to a toy store, and seeing a line of children try out a demo kiosk only to be literally unable to play Crazy Taxi due to how fuckhuge the controller is, and they walked away and bought something else instead.
>>
>>382011352

Shit, they did? What games does it have? I probably wouldn't have bought it because I still have 2 working Genesis' but still.
>>
Seeing as how the NES classic sold out, are we thinking SNES will do the same? Im asking for business purposes
>>
>>382020247
No.
>>
>>382012201
Obviously. Literally everyone was just waiting for the PS2 to come out.

Dreamcast may be cult now in some circles but at the time it failed.
>>
>>382020337
I think they were appealing to arcade fans, not children. Although I do think the controller was not that good for fighters (specially after the saturn) which were the console's strenght.
>>
>>382019486
Never happened with another other controller I've ever held. I own 13 consoles.
>>
>>382018031
not everyone is a burger where i live people charge out of their ass for gamecube games if there are any sellers to begin with a second hand copy of twilight princess was going for 100 eur
>>
>>382021094
Certain games (the ones people want to keep) are obviously going to be expensive. Nobody's going to part with a copy of Melee or Tales of Symphonia anytime soon unless they're ungodly poor and need the money.
>>
>>382012201
>but the truth is that Sega has always been the second string choice or the poor kid option
Wrong. Sega had a greater share of the video game market in the US and Europe than Nintendo did for a time.

>Its library couldn't compare with the SNES at all
And the SNES library couldn't compare with the Genesis at all. This was back when different consoles actually offered different things, dude.
If you wanted RPGs or whatever, the SNES was the clear victor and it's not even close.
If you wanted fast-paced arcadey action, the Genesis was the clear victor and it's not even close.
>>
>>382020337
I think you're one of those people who's never touched a dreamcast but wants to hate it. The controller was fine for kids. Get over it.

i actually got one for $40 at target. The thing itself is absolutely horrible. Buttons were also horrible and were extremely hard to use. Returned immediately.

sega has been licensing rom bundle systems since forever

nintendo just has a lot of retard fans who think mini nes/mini snes are a new concept

do not buy rom collections. they literally have no value and offer an experience worse than actually downloading the rom and using the right emulator yourself.
>>
>>382023480
This thing was a piece of shit for most of the same reasons the Genesis one is.
>>
at@ames is awful, all of their stuff has the build quality of one of those LED games you would get from mcdonalds. Usually all terribly emulated too. I had a few of their handheld genesis machines that had like 20-30 games on them each, and not only was the sound bad (I can stand standard emulated genesis sounds, it's never gonna be perfect, but this was fucking HORRIBLE), the games were running at like half their normal FPS, it was ridiculous, when my PSP played the games at full speed and with better sound emulation when those fucking things were built.

>>
>>382024463
The extra content comes at the cost of locked 30FPS.
>>
>>382024914

Nintendo would never do that since they think their old ROMs (that they just downloaded off the internet rather than actually having internal backups) are worth $60 still.
>>
>>382024463
not him but its a ps2 port on ps3 with a dub option and widescreen, but the original ps2 port had issues in the first place.
framerate was halved on ps2 and cell shading along with several floor shadows were removed. save circles have less effects.
they did add some new outfits on ps3 and faces have new textures however.

still, the framerate is hella bad and i wouldn't recommend the port.
>>
>>382011352

the people buying these things never played their 1st generation. so NES fanboys that never experienced NES/SNES are buying them because they're hipsters and Nintendo is trendy. None of them, obviously, ever played a Genesis. And it's not trendy. So hipsters didn't buy it.

Old people for the most part don't give a fuck. I am 35. Played all these during the 1st gen. And, honestly, they're just shit compared to modern gaming. Sorry if it's taboo to admit that. This stuff is solely for nostalgia, and if you try it, it gets old after about 10 minutes like reliving a bad memory. It's just not enjoyable now that you know better.
>>
>>382025375
And no cel shading, which completely ruins the aesthetic of the game.
