I do, I have no idea WHY but I almost always choose female unconsciously. I dont self-insert into shit so I'm not doing it to actually pretend I'm a woman, I personally think that since I play games for escapism I pick female characters to get even more away from myself, since I'm a dude.

If there are heavy narrative based role playing elements, I play as male. If role-playing is tangential at best (stats/classes/etc), I don't care about playing as a female.

depends on design and how good the character creator is. If the female design sucks, I'll play male. If all the character customization options suck i'll just play male. Otherwise i end up spending nearly an hour meticulously fine tuning every detail to engineer a grade A waifu.

If i'm going to spend 70+ hours staring at a characters ass, listening to them grunt and pant, watching them die and dressing them up in fantasy clothing...it's going to be a fucking woman.

Only when it's a little different than the male playthrough or makes sense in the story. I don't see a problem playing as a female in fo4 tearing up the wasteland for her baby.

It's by no means a necessity for me to enjoy a game, but it is something I enjoy a lot. I simply enjoy female characters more, both because I like girls, and because they tend to just be a bit more entertaining and unique than male protagonists.

For the sake of those reasons, I also tend to pick female if an option is given - unless there's straight-only romance options.

Some of my favourite games ever have female protags, but they're not just my favourite games because of that. But it's definitely one of the cool things I like about them. Pic related.

It depends on the type of game.

If it's some kind of exploration game, horror game, or anything that involves feelings of isolation and fear, I prefer females as playing as the physically weaker sex brings about more tension and you feel like less of a badass.

However if the game is about some demigod mother fucker running around ripping people in half and taking out an entire army single-handedly, I prefer males.

If it's a JRPG I generally don't care either way as I feel less like I'm the character and more like I'm just reading a book or watching a movie, however in western RPGs I usually play as a male since they tend to allow for more customization and player input.

That said I always play as a female in MMO's (Unless there's a dating sim/romance aspect built in like in Old Republic) because I like dressing an attractive woman in various styles of clothing, and they tend to have more hairstyle and makeup options which lets me change up my character more often so I get less bored of them.
