The only thing that aged badly about classic cRPGs is that I have a hard time telling the background apart from usable objects, but everything looks and plays gorgeously

What? There is very little reading, and the comprehension is elementary. Some of the quests are pretty much just "Go to X and kill Y. I will reward you." and you answer "Yes" or "No".

It's because it doesn't have first or third person shooter gameplay, really.
The actual game is really fun, but people with a strong preference for 3D Fallouts will have a hard time getting into it.

I like how conversations have more depth in these games. Nowadays people expect voice acting in everything, and that kind of hurt the dialogue.

The issue is were understanding what happened before the war.
fallout 1 had a unique atmosphere because you had no idea what happened.
All you knew is that a nuclear war had happened and your "ancestors" were ok because they hid in a vault.

Since the newer fallout games have explained the fallout universe what your left with in fallout 1 is a difficult game to play.
