Just reinstalled it.
Did an 8 player (7 ai) game on france map, got a cozy as fuck corner surrounded by border and one side of water, ended up getting murdered by some fucking miliitant Aztecs right next door.

I need to get better.

And the expansion packs are just more campaigns to play alone, it isn't necessary to buy them in order to play the game online.

Yep, as far as i know, i had the original game and the expansion pack in disk format back in the 2000's and all it had where campaigns, maps are the same and races too.

Dunno if it changed with the years, if someone has the expansion packs, please clear our doubts xP

You can choose to play as one of the new civilisations even if you don't have the expansions because some are selected weekly or something to be available to all. You can also pick the data set that you're using that determines whether the changes will be applicable.
