It was the cheapest DVD player out at the time, so tons of people bought it just for that. As a result, devs noticed how much it was selling, so more devs made games for it. If a console has a shit load of games made for it, there's more chances to get decent games. Its best games weren't as good as the Gamecube's best games, but for every amazing Gamecube game, PS2 had 2 or 3 decent games. That's basically it.

Reminder that the original Xbox can play MX vs. ATV Unleashed at native 1080i and Freedom Fighters at native 720p. PS2 can barely play 480i games.

While there was plenty of amazing games there was so much shit or games that got worse than previous iterations just so they could ride the novel factor of 3dimensional worlds. The closest comparison gen would be when NES hit and there was a lot of shit games that were riding on the revival of gaming and the graphical leap from the Atari era shit.

PS2-Dreamcast-Xbox-GC is when they finally refined the transition and set the gameplay foundations most games follow now for almost all genres. If you really want to point fingers it's the generations that came after that introduced toxic monetary models, genre collapses, the death of a lot of famous properties and devs etc.

Only way to play Devil May Cry 1 and 3 and the Metal Gear games at the time. Plus JRPGs and fighting games. DC did fighters better, but PS2 has more and a better controller. XBOX only had Halo and slightly better multiplats. GC was Nintendo exclusives and better but not as good as Xbox multiplats.

There was a time that the PS2 was literally the cheapest DVD player available. Sony marketed it not only as a game console, but on this basis as well. Plenty of people, including my own fucking brother bought one to watch movies like The Matrix, and the ability to play games was a bonus. Had N64 and a PS1. But I also build hoppy shop machines myself and from a tech standpoint N64 is fucking retarded. Monster GPU that was decent by PC standards for its day being completely useless due to bad buffers and lack of direct access between parts. We wouldn't see anything even close to this retarded again until PS3, but that one was less crippling since it the rest of the PS3 wasn't that great either. But N64 squandered some killer GPU power and I don't even remember it being to advertise horsepower it couldn't use. It was just a thing they did.

Not defending the PS2 really. I've always felt it road in on the success of the PS1 which was much more impressive for its time and much better utilized within in its limits.

But if you want to poke at the PS2's flaws the reality is that everything it did wrong was done far worse by someone else. Its not one of my favorites, but it is a matter of tech fact that its flaws are seen in worse cases in other systems. That was the gen I went PC anyway.
