Squall dies in disc 1.

Chrono Cross, Metal Gear Solid 2

Wrong, Squall died during the opening FMV from the wound he got from taking Seifer's gunblade to his head when he got distracted from the battle by daydreaming about random fields and women

The events of the game, even on disc 1 wouldn't make sense if he did. We're seeing the second loop of the events, and what you see at the end of the game is what started it all. FFVIII just requires decent retention to fully understand. That, or you read a well-written summary.

When Edea spears Squall through the chest she deliberately hits him in the right side (take a good, long look at the pic), this is to keep him alive, left chest = dead, center = risking hitting his heart or cutting off trachea. Now at the time Edea is being possessed by Ultimecia who in turn knows about the prophesy of "legendary SeeDs" from past killing her. But she doesn't know which SeeD's. Because of this "Edeamecia" wants to interrogate Squall to find out more about SeeD and the Garden. She needs to find the people who will stop her reign as Sorceress and kill them. Squall and co. are purposely imprisoned kept alive for this. The reason why they interrogate Squall instead of Quistis or Zell is because the interrogation is done by Seifer as "Edeamecia" is busy organizing the missile strikes against the Gardens. Seifer has a grudge against Squall and personally wants to interrogate him because of this. Also Seifer clearly says that he wanted to start with Squall because he "liked" him so much. This is why Squall's life is spared and why he is interrogated by Seifer or at least my view of it.

Also you have to remember that your entire party gets shot, stabbed, electrocuted, set on fire and frozen in blocks of ice to name just a few of the things that happen to them on a daily basis and Squall wound is made by the most adept magic user in order to incapacitate Squall and not kill him. How does that work? It's magic. How was he healed? It's magic. Magic in a FANTASY game in a world where we have curative spells, Phoenix Downs and stuff like that completely healing those wounds is reasonable.

Also we could easily take the concept of Squall is dead for other FFs:

FF1: Garland actually did knock them all down and the rest of the game is second party member's fantasy about how his journey might have continued, had he not died then and there.

FFII: Your party gets killed by the Dark Knights as soon as you start the game and the rest of the game is Firion's fantasy about how his journey might have continued, had he not died then and there.

FFIII: Onion Kids die when they fall in the hole at beginning of the game and the rest of the game is Onion Kid#3's fantasy about how his journey might have continued, had he not died then and there.
Note that this one is based on the NES version I don't know how accurate this is for the DS one.

FFIV: Cecil gets killed by the earthquake caused by Rydia summoning Titan at the Mist Village and the rest of the game is his fantasy about how his journey might have continued, had he not died then and there.

FFV: The party drowns when the Waltz Tower sunks and the rest of the game is Galuf's fantasy about how his journey might have continued, had he not died then and there.

FFVI: Tritoch kills Terra, Wedge and Vicks in the Narshe Mines. At that point on Terra is already dead and the rest of the game is her fantasy about how her journey might have continued, had she not died then and there.

FFVII: Cloud clearly died during the Nibelheim Incident years before the game even starts when both him and Tifa got impaled by Sephiroth's sword during the flasback of it we are shown and that same sword is later on shown to be lethal with Aeris' death. Also why neither Tifa or Cloud have even scars or any visible wounds during the events of the game? That must clearly mean that Cloud died during the Nibelheim incident and whole FFVII and all of it's spin-offs and sequels are just his dreams about how his live could have been if he hadn't died there and then. Need we be reminded of how many times Cloud was pierced by a weapon in Advent Children and yet still got up, was not bleeding, and was able to move without any form of slowing?

FFIX: Zidane freezes to death in the frozen caves. He never actually fights the first Tenor. At that point, he is already dead and the rest of the game is his fantasy about how his journey might have continued, had he not died then and there.

FFX: Tidus was just a dream to begin with...

FFXI: The player gives up his live when he starts playing.

FFXII: This is all just Reck's dream as he is dying.

FF Tactics: Ramza dies at the end of Chapter I when Fort Zeakden explodes and the rest of the game is his fantasy about how his journey might have continued, had he not died then and there.

this is the shittiest meme
the game's story is fairly cohesive and well done, but it requires you to pay attention to things in the background and piece everything together mentally after you've finished it
when you realize it's a time travel story almost every weird thing (like the orphanage) in the game makes sense

the only thing in the game that seems a little too convenient is finding the ragnarok in outer space, if they'd foreshadowed its existence better it wouldn't feel as much like a deus ex machina
>>
>>381803745
>FF5 and 6
Better yet, the meteor ends all life on Earth, and Terra didn't ever have her slave crown removed and is hallucinating the events of the game until she dies from exhaustion or injuries.
>>
There's nothing even remotely hard to understand or obtuse about FF8. The only people who don't understand it are those who do so intentionally (i.e. people who make up stupid fan theories)

most of the criticism about Squall is due the terrible localization, he never said ''whatever'' ad nauseam in the japanese version.

Spoony was right...RIGHT!
>>
>>381804037
The draw system wasn't really casual friendly and people somehow didn't notice the broken item=magic abilities for GF's

I love Spoony but it was painful watching him try to explain how bad the draw system was, when you only really needed to use it for a total of like 5 fights

B-B-BUT VAGRANT STORY'S LOCALIZATION IS CONSIDERED ONE OF THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME IN ANY MEDIUM
>>
>>381804939

I'm pretty sure that the casual cancer hadn't hit the western markets by the early 2000's yet, people were still fine with commitment and grind in RPGs.
>>
>>381801680
There's nothing to understand, it's dumb bullshit. The best argument you can make is that it's INTENTIONALLY dumb bullshit, considering that the ending goes straight for the mindfuck and doesn't try to make any kind of logical sense.
>>
>>381805471
The problem with people judging localizations is that 99.9% of them have only played the English version and think if it sounds good, it must be right. I haven't played either version of Vagrant Story, so I can't comment.

so that's why its called "Final Fantasy" huh...?

I could believe unintentional. Because there's no way anyone writing the story to this game could be clever enough to make it a parody on purpose.

You should. It's legitimately GOAT, and O. Smith worked alongside the director and writer to deliver the best experience. It's actually so good that it's considered better than the original Japanese script.
