People talk about this game as if it eventually clicks and suddenly you become enlightened about its whole experience.

Is it true?
>>
I liked it from the start.
>>
>>381789753
Free version is better IMO.
Yeah, it's true, it really does click once you get in the zone.
Reminds me a lot of Team Fortress 2 in that way.
>>
>>381789753
I don't know, anon. I've been playing this game for at least 8 years, since the freeware days, so I don't remember if there was a definitive "it clicked moment". But, I can tell you that if you're careful and pay attention, you will get better at the game.

For the last couple of years, it was my go to game for zoning out and listening to podcasts.

I just have trouble seeing where comments calling it a masterpiece etc come from.

Maybe I haven't had a good enough of a go at it
>>
>>381790414
It's just really well designed and balanced. The gold standard for rogue-lite platformers, really. Every little pieces of gameplay fits so well into each other that they can be scrambled up randomly and still make a great experience everytime.
>>
>>381790991
How do I get gud
>>
It's the epitome of a video game.
Too often you have to decide between flawed gems, polished turds and buggy could-have-beens.
But sometimes everything falls into place and something like Spelunky comes along. Everything is just right.
>>
>>381791120
Take it slow and careful. And don't fear the ghost, it's just another baddie to evade from.
>>
>>381789753
I dunno. It took me like two hours to get into it but I didn't "become enlightened", it just got really fun.
>>
>>381791120
Go slow at first, pay attention to the surroundings, press down to see where you're going to fall, save your bombs for when you really need them, learn to kill shopkeepers, learn to ghostrun, you can whip arrows out of the air.
>>
>>381790414
It's one of those games where you get better the more you play because you learn from your mistakes

goddamn, what other useful shit don't I know about this game
>>
>>381792828
You can crawl and hang over arrow traps for them to shoot without harming you

The freeware version is better
Better graphics and a level editor
>>
>>381791487
>You can whip arrows out of the air
I put like 250 hours into this fucking game and I didnt know that
>>
>>381789753
I beat the game twice waiting for that moment and it never came, I hated it the whole way through.
>>
>>381793059
>>381790065
can we stop this meme? 30 fps, bad controls and fucked physics that make items freeze in midair whenever they move outside the screen does not make for a better game than the remake
>>
>>381793059
The remake has a great co-op and versus mode though. Shame they're local only.
>>
>>381790173
What do you think about Towerclimb? It's also a roguelite similar to Spelunky in a way.
>>
>>381789753
Unlike Isaac, you're not necessarily limited by the shit the game gives you, at least not in the boring way where it takes ages to kill enemies. Your main limit is simply how gud you are.

This is legitimately one of my favorite games of all time.

Will there ever be a sequel? I'm sure it'd be amazing, bigger levels, more secrets, maybe random pvp fights if multiple people online are in the same level, online co-op, better battle mode.

Hmm, makes me wonder what Derek Yu is working on nowadays.
>>
>>381789753

I've put hundreds of hours onto it and that's saying something for a game that I've beaten I'm under 5 minutes or 14 if you count hell.
>>
>>381793202
can you stop calling things that are not memes, memes?
>>
>>381795643

>the I am the meme master meme
>>
>>381795218

I feel like he's going to disappoint Spelunky fans
>>
>>381796339
All everybody ever wants are goddamn sequels.
>>
>>381792828
if you crouch one tile away from boulder traps the boulder will hop right over you and keep rolling. Red frogs are scary, but equally useful. If you don't want to deal with them, throw 'em in some water to cool them down.

Always throw a bomb at the bottom of a snake pit. Just do it.
>>
Has someone here read Derek Yu's book? Is it any good?
>>
>>381789753
No matter how good you could be at this game, you can't stop the shopkeeper walking into an arrow trap and blaming you for it, so no, I don't think it's true.
>>
>>381796737

Stick with what works.
>>
>>381796851
It's pretty interesting if you're really into Spelunky I guess, but it didn't really leave an impression on me.
>>
>>381796864

That's extremely rare if you haven't already angered him. That's also part of the randomness and appeal.

It's my favorite game but it's not without flaws. You can cheese the game 3adilyrobbing the shopkeeper
>>
>>381796737
I know right
I want to punch every goddamn 12 year old who asks for fucking Cave Story 2
>>
>>381799015
Kero Blaster is so damn good like what do these people want if not fantastic level design
>>
>toss bomb far away

It's a fantastic game. The better you get at it the more enjoyable it becomes.
>>
>took months to beat hell
>beat it back to back runs the first ti.e I finally did

God I suck under pressure
>>
>>381790991
>It's just really well designed and balanced. The gold standard for rogue-lite platformers, really.
rogue-lite platformers is like making a fucking turn-based fighting game, the whole point of the genre is jumping on platforms that have been placed in the tightest, most interesting ways possible and then you go and make the level design literally fucking random
>>
>>381800293

>wahh it's different
>>
>>381800582
>hey this parachute is filled with giant holes and anvils
>"wahh it's different"
>>
>>381800874

What did he mean by this? Spelunky not defective bruh. You need to git gud
>>
>>381796738
Is there a specific reason for throwing the bomb besides the fact that it kills all the snakes and gets any gems out of the dirt?
>>
>>381801146
>wow just get good
spelunkys problem is not that it's difficult
spelunkys problem is that it doesn't remotely understand its own main genre
>>
>>381801601
There's a pickaxe in the dirt at the bottom.
>>
>>381801601

There is a pick axe there. There is also a jet pack behind the alien that randomly spawns on an ice level with lazero and shit. (Not the specific alien ship level)
>>
>>381801790

>problem

Nearly universal praise? The problem is you. You don't get it, dad

>>
>>381802131
"indie" cultists and journalists are as a rule mentally ill

and sure, you can have some casual fun with it for a few hours or so when you want something light and quick, I sure did, but if you play 600 hours of spelunky you're fucking dumb
>>
>>381802505
>playing a game too much is wrong
>/v/
>>
I just bought it and it's fun but still don't see why people think is so great.
The controls seem kind of wonky and the music and sound design sound really amateur
>>
i gave it a proper shot after decrying it as a rip off of la mulana
it's good in it's own right and pretty challenging
it also has tight controls and cool items
if you can get it fo cheep then GET IT
>>
>>381803641

>wonky controls

Confirmed for never playing
>>
>>381802881
playing a game means you don't play other better games
>>
>>381795218
A Switch port of Spelunky, hopefully.
>>
>>381796851
It's literally just about Spelunky.
