Opinions on Bravely Default?

I'm a few hours into it and the story is boring fantasy shit and the characters are bland as fuck. Does it get any better?
>>
>Does it get any better
Not really.
>>
>>381786421
Its basically FFV
That being said the story starts to change away from the super basic plot at around the 3rd town. If you're not loving the combat and the job system though I'd say youre not going to like it too much
>>
>>381786556
Is there any better JRPG's on the 3DS other than SMTIV? I fuckin love SMT.
>>
>>381786723
The gameplay is perfect and fun, but the story is what keeps me playing games and it's pretty weak so far. I'll stick with it though.
>>
>>381786421
>Does it get any better?
>better
oh dear...
you might as well quit while you're ahead. and believe me, you're ahead
>>
Yeah it is very similar to FFV which is why I like it so much. Honestly just stop playing now. The second half of the game is very infamous and most people hate it, and if you're already not enjoying it much you're going to absolutely hate it later.
>>
>>381786737

Bravely Default is carried by its gameplay. Your ability to enjoy it is based on whether you like that aspect enough to put up with all the other shit.

>Mystic Knight, my favorite class, is worthless outside of its ability, which is much better on other classes that can attack more than once
>Dual Wielding is worthless

Dropped, at least the soundtrack was good
>>
>>381786421
you will love the gameplay, but don't expect the story/character to be any better they get worse
>>
>>381787752
I applaud you for accurately describing it as the second half, if even that.
>>
>>381788714
>Characters have individual stats so they are forced into a certain role

That was true for FFV

>every enemy is a damage sponge
git gud
>>
>>381788893
I mean it is more like the last third of the game since you can blitz through it so much quicker than everything that comes before it, but many people just drop the game at that "half way" point
>>
>>381789137
Absolutely. Or claim "you need to replay the game 3 times for the real ending"

Any other games out there where I can develop a bunch of classes like this?
Really enjoyed BD 1 and 2 because of the class system and I'd like to play something similar.

It's very hard to go back to other turnbased games after this one did combat encounters so well.
>>
It has the shittiest game content known to mankind, but the game mechanics are good, but wasted on this trash

I'm an indecisive person so I would usually hover on the option a bit but really it came down to "Yeah that one looks cooler or might have some skills that would be good with what I'm going for." Plus some classes were pretty similar so it was fine skipping them. Plus you get them all eventually anyways

I guess the option was kind of fun. Made me value the classes more.

>>

>I'm a few hours into it and the story is boring fantasy shit and the characters are bland as fuck. Does it get any better?

Nope. In fact, it's mostly auto battle and grinding. Even after you think you beat it, the game forces you to redo everything 4 times before it gives you the real ending.

It's horrible. Despite that, nintendo fanboys praised the fuck out of it like it's the second coming of jesus.
>>
>>381793837
It's just worse in almost every way.
You and magnolia are boring characters, the jobs are more original but too silly, the story is worse and has a much heavier generic anime feel to it and the music, probably the best part about the first game, is generic and unmemorable.
>>
>>381795356

I liked it a lot, people hate the reset but i found the expanded backstory pretty nice and the bosses swaping teams for 4v4 fights was pretty challenging.

Im playing Second now, just beated the cakes guy in weebland. I feel like second is harder, Artemia and Cakes guys killed me a good couple of times, i dont remember diying this much in Default.
Also, any good grinding spot?. Chaining fishes and harpies is getting old.

>>
>>381802661
The choice between red mage and a thief in the second game is so fucking awful as gameplay-wise thief is too useful for saving money or getting double boss steals but only a retard would entrust pretty much the nuclear weapon to old mindbreaking rapist.

I liked Yew more than Ringabel but really wasn't impressed with Magnolia (how baseless her thirst for Yew's dick was a real turnoff). Yew was pretty cute and I'm a fag for worldbuilding banter, of which he had a ton.

I think after the preview in the first game I just thought she'd be cooler. My fault for having high expectations I guess.

A whole lot of games are guilty of bad communication between conflicting parties, but BD is really blatant about it.

Unless it's Trails or your name is Yoko Taro, that won't fly.

Yew is a dork and i have no idea what the fuck they were trying to do with him, but alongside the rest of the cast he's surprisingly okay as he spends most of the time as a walking encyclopaedia. And Edea, Tiz and Agnes in Second are arguably more interesting than they were in original game.
>>
Am I the only one that enjoyed Bravely Second more? I loved all the world building going on, and even though Yew was a basic scaredy cat he still had some struggles to deal with. My only complaint was how obsessed with food the cast was, even though I liked their interactions most of the time.

>Bitch, it's a glorified boss rush.

I never understood why this was a bad thing, gameplay wise.

One of my favorite things about BD (and FF8, despite it also being a pretty dumb game plotwise) is that you can turn off random encounters, play around with setups to break the game open, and just fight bosses.

Ain't this was because of a massive misunderstanding involving what magnolia meant to moon people alongside the fact she spent majority of her life as a ba'al buster and ended up being fairly socially inept and inexperienced?

Tiz/Agnes was established way better though.

This.
And i loved how they gave a random encounter rate shortcut in Second, too. As well as giving a REALLY easy access to JP farming via continuous battles which needed actual manual input instead of just running around with auto-battle on.

This. I let him being the MC keep me away from the game for nearly a year before using it to kill time this summer and I feel bad. He wasn't even really the MC, and I ended up liking him way more than I thought I would anyway.

>>381805274

It was, but the fact that the writers decided to pick it up again after this was brought to light was stupid. Was Tiz/Agnes and Edea/Ringalternis not enough? Did they really have to messily pair off the next set of M/F characters too? It made the game worse for me in a way that's hard to articulate. I guess it's just autism.
>>
>>381804940
There's simply too much similarities between Yulyana and Ringabel to just ignore them, in my opinion. If Agnes from some timeline fell into a distant past, then some Alternis could do the same, land in distant past with amnesia then develop like Ringabel.

Edea/Ringabel is a weird one as i still can't understand whether it's closer to love to a family member or romantic love.

So what is the plot of the game? I know by reputation that people hate it and that there is some kind of time loop half way through. But other than that most people don't even talk about the plot much other than to trash talk it. Does the game even have characters with personalities?

Someone give me the basic gestalt on the plot and why it sucks. I vaguely know about the Airy Lies thing and that sounds pretty cool.

>characters with personalities?

One of the better (or worse, depending on how you feel about fluff) things about the game is that there is a SHITLOAD not-plot-relevant party banter and diary text. I was really impressed with it because I feel a lot of J/RPGs fail at having this kind of depth anymore. Naturally the solution to this problem is "read a book, dingus" but I really appreciate games that go out of their way to still do this.
>>
>>381806713
damn it's been a while
so basically there's this land with four kingdoms, each blessed by a specific crystal
but the crystals have gone dark (pretty much in the traditional "everything is peaceful but one day shit goes wrong", so now you join agnes in a journey around the world, guided by the little shit fairy to awaken them
>>
>>381806849

I only played the demo and it didn't captivate me enough to buy the full game. I'm just going on vague 2nd hand accounts. Someone earlier in the thread implied it was the half-way point.
>>
>>381806713

hurrdurr some war between "we worship the crystals" and "crystals must be destroyed! use technology!" people

basically if you['ve watched avatar the last airbender, it's that

the "evil" empire does things like use the crystal's healing power for their hospitals and create literal paradise, but only for like 10% of the people in the world, so you help the rest of the world destroy them and awaken the crystals, which actually destroys the world and opens a hellish nightmare upon it (the crater you start the game in).

It's pretty awful. The fairy is actually the demon that destroys the world, because every time, she survives and gets stronger.

You have to do this 5 times before the game lets you fight the "real" boss (the fairy)

But after you do it once, if you've got a bunch, you can just tap X too fast and too hard when awakening the crystal, to destroy it, which awakens the evil bitch, and you canf ight them and end the game right there, but it's not the "true" ending.

desu it's pretty shit, but I idndnt have any other better RPGs on the 3ds.

i played stella glow and it was basically being a pimp + fire emblem + singing
>>
>>381806447
Well Alternis mentions that he has power over darkness, maybe that's what gives him a fucklong lifespan.
As for big-ass nose, may be just another japanese trope where characters who get old magically grow it like they are some kind of Pinocchio.

>>
>>381806795
Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if they did. BD gives more of what I'd want from a final fantasy game than anything SE has done in a long time. And we can't have it competing with Final Fantasy.
>>
>>381807754
After awakening the crystals the party flies into a beam of light that takes them into a parallel dimension. Then they do this again like 5 times, because Airy said so, even though they're told Airy is evil by the 4th time and the 3rd is literally perfect for staying in it. That is why I don't like it, because it drags on and on and doesn't make sense at all.

>They all felt like actual close friends, which is a rare for JRPGs.

This. I think BS is even better about that, my beef with them pushing Yew and Magnolia aside.

>>381807754

The fairy is asking you to "awaken" (overcharge) crystals because she's a servant of some dickass monster who wants to get to the celestial realm and corrupt it (more about what the celestial realm is in BS),

When you get all 4 crystals lit shit hits the fan and you wake up at the beginning of the game. You go wake up crystals again because the fairy says so. Along the way you get hints that the fairy isn't actually a good fairy, but you end up repeating the awakening like 5 times or something (it's been a while since I've played).

A lot of people found this lazy because there is nothing new but character banter/backstory for some of the people you killed in the first world and alllllllllllllllll of it is just reusable art assets.

Personally I was able to look past this because I liked uncovering new backstory shit, but understand why some people were like "fuck this lol" and stopped.

>>381807951

I love this too. Thanks Ringabel and Yew.
>>
>>381807754
You are traveling along the world to clean the crystals while dealing with the eternia who want to destroy them. Once you clean them all you just wake up at the beggining of the game with full party and stats. At this point you can just walk to the crystal and cleam them again skipping the sidequest if you want, do this 4 times to real ending.
During the travel you discover pretty much everyone's motivations and why you keep reseting the game everytime you fix all the crystals

Most people skips the sidequest but its not recommendable. Plot wise you get a fuckton of backstory on characters and the bulk of the main plot. Gameplay wise the asterisk holder team up to fighting you for really cool boss battles.

Honestly i don't remember a single good BS theme, and for whatever reasons they changed character themes of Tiz and Edea to something far less dynamic and cool. Tiz at the very least should've kept "You are my hope" because this time Agnes is at stakes directly.

Question, at which point does the title screen change and it becomes more obvious that Airy is evil and how far is that point from the party realizing it? And is it true that the game snaps your face during the final battle and displays it on the screen?

I preferred Bravely Second and consider its only black marks how dumb Yew/Magnolia was and the soundtrack downgrade (which I consider slight, but still worth noting).

The world building was sublime, I really like how they went into the duchy/orthodoxy plague drama.

Also another case where censored outfits look better than the JP version. Cowboy > indian, hot pants > bikini, boob window > torso window

Game feels better after you get more asterisks. I'm turbo autistic about completion, so I'd comb new areas for diary completion before moving on, which made for hours of early-game without variety. It's been a while but let's see if I can remember.
4HoL is pretty much the spiritual predecessor to BD, and it's a lot closer to "traditional" Final Fantasy in terms of feel. A lot of concepts and the overall feeling of BD comes from 4HoL.
It's kind of a rough game. Jobs are tied to "Crowns" and those determine your class, and similar to BD, you're not restricted in terms of gear but some jobs are more proficient at certain things than others. The big difference is that in order to level up/improve your job you have to install gems into the crown, and that unlocks new abilities to use. Abilities are also tied to a "cost" and all actions in battle use up a cost. Improving your crown gives you more actions and more abilities to use. You also have some pretty weird and unique crowns/jobs like Party Host and Wayfarer.
In terms of story and characters there are a lot of parallels to BD, like the naive princess and mysterious young boy, but unlike BD they're all indifferent to each other. The game also LOVES to split up the party from time to time and each part of the game usually consists of one or two members tackling their own shit trying to accomplish the goal in their own way, but all the characters end up developing pretty well by the end. Music is pretty great and the game can get pretty bullshit at parts but it's pretty fun. Again it's definitely rough so you might have a hard time getting through it.
>>
>>381786895
I won't give too much away, but the second half of the game is basically a deconstruction of a bunch of RPG cliches.

The story was penned by the writer of Steins;gate, and it's going to start showing soon.
>>
>>381793837
The second half of the game has you go back and get all the jobs you didn't pick.
>>
Downloades the mobile game today. The MMO one. it's pretty nice but just slow, makes me want to play the sequel that I skipped. You think its worth it if I enjoyed BD for the jobs and simple combat. Story was fine but the characters were enjoyable. Pretty sure there's unscensor patches cause i heard they actually cut some stuff

Like MGS2, the story is too fucking smart for the average gamer. It gets dangerously meta, dealing with concepts like New Game+ and restarting games in general as vital plot points, which all the drooling retards failed to pick up on because in this day and age people lack the imagination to have opinions of their own and just parrot what youtube/4chan told them.
>>
What's the cardinal sin of any time travel narrative? Characters not acting upon the knowledge that they retain. If they just do the same fucking thing over and over again what's the point besides stretching out the life of your game by reusing assets and enemies?

In BD they had to do it because they needed to summon the true big bad and had to complete more cycles in order to do it. The whole "don't be afraid to disobey" was referring to them NOT breaking the cycles short and missing out on the chance to take Ouroboros down. Also in BD there are some events and bosses you can do right away because the party already knows what's gonna happen, and in some worlds certain events have changed completely.
The really bad thing about BDs successful time loop is the fact that after everything's done, they still go "Oh man, how could we NOT see this coming?!" even though Ringabel had indulged everyone in on Airy's bullshit beforehand.
>>
>>381786421
Chapters 1-4 are great. Chapter 5 is okay, but 6-8 are stupid. And it's a shame they went nuts with the censorship in the original game and then went totally off the rails insane with it in the second. I just gave up on the series and didn't buy Bravely Second as a result.

This happens less and less as the cycles continue. You'd assume there would be some form of escalation, but as far as I can recall you mostly just killed the same bosses over and over again with some minor changes to the story on occasion. The characters don't seem to be all that distressed that they are just repeating the same actions over and over again beyond loop 2-3. I believe at one point they loop again and the only comment they make is something along the lines of "Oh, it happened again".

I doubt it. Most people are like "waaaah why do I have to play the same game with a few changes again!?"

Do you have the same complains when playing a Roguelike? Civ 5? Did anyone ever lose their shit after hunting the same monster twice in monster hunter? How previous playthroughs would affect you as a player is what BD delves into, arguably giving it the best NG+ in video game history.

I think something like VLR does a better job at constructing a genre with time travel than BD. No-one is complaining that you have to fight the same fights more than once, that's RPGs in a nutshell, the point of contention is that they don't really capitalise on their own premise. Seven loops is too much for what they're trying to do, they could have achieved the same effect with 3. It feels less like Groundhog day and more like Endless Eight, it's like yeah, I get it, you had a unique idea, now when the fuck are we going to wrap this up?

Some JRPGs have "touch enemy on a map" mechanics, which I prefer to random, but I've yet to encounter one with all 3.

Earthbound had "autokill enemies that touch you that you out level"

The Last Remnant let you collect map mobs and fight them on at once.

Chrono Cross had a FF feature.

Star Ocean 3 had a "bonus gauge" that worked kind of like bonus battles, but you still had to chain map mobs.

Can't think of anything else that was really noteworthy.

He didn't destroy just a few worlds, Airy has been linking worlds for dozens of thousands of MILLIONS years just for him to eat and revive. Shit is so much time i just can't comprehend how she didn't get bored.
>>
>>381811651

I'll believe it. The designs for virtually every female MOB in FFXIV (particularly noticeable with Garuda) is basically an ass and thighs with the rest of it looking like it was attached after the fact.
>>
Another thing i find hilarious about the Second is that antagonists actually consider Yew as a threat. And not two fucking warriors of light travelling with him who wrecked a motherfucking God a few years prior to it or a girl whose daily routine involved busting ba'als.

I dont think so, square guted half the game's production for Second. i guess they thought people would buy it anyway

Poor Agnes was forced to live two years while not even knowing if he will wake up.
And that's after confirming multiple times over the course of the first game that he's the person closest to her.
>>
Dub quality was really surprising to me. It's probably one of a few JRPG where i preferred to play with english dub, aside from FF12 and original Nier.
>>
>>381832151
Such a great ending.

I like it when sweet, obvious endings are done well. This one was done well.

The World Ends With You allows you to intentionally lower your level in exchange for increasing enemy drop rates. Your level really only affected how much HP you had so it made grinding otherwise rare drops a breeze. It did the same tradeoff for increasing the difficulty.

Bishop though? What a convenient secondary.

>tfw Bravely and Automata are my favourite JRPGs of last five years

Fucking same. They feel similar to me in theme and tone too. Or at least in how meta they both are and how having a multi-route approach with slightly different perspectives each time makes me love the characters more than I normally would.
>>
>>381817696
This image is amusing but the reason why Braev didnt mention anything about Airy is that she was right there with Agnes and he knew that she'd just [Massacre] them all if he so much as mentioned her bullshit.

Fuck sounds like I should play Automata

Can I go in blind without Nier
>>

Yes, you can. There will be a few deeper references to Nier that you wont get but it wont take away from the actual story of Nier Automata.

You can, but you lose a lot of "little things"

It's like going into BS without BD desu. You CAN, but you miss out on the foundation that made most of the shit about BS fun to see.
>>
Default and Second are my favorite JRPGs. Default's story especially is great, and though the twist at the end is obvious if you've been paying an ounce of attention, I still enjoyed the story, especially the little moments between the main characters. The endgame with the parallel worlds gets a lot of flack, which is sad, because there's a lot of new fights, dialogue, and story that you'll miss if you just rush to every temple and finish them quickly.
>>
>>381837741
Yes. You will miss some throwbacks but story-wise it's entirely self-contained.
Just remember, the game has 3 routes, when you see ending A, you're barely 30% into it.
>>
>>381837385
>bravely default
>characters
you wot m8? they are literally cliche ass rpg tropes that talk about food non stop
>>
Man, I remember wondering how Bravely Second would out-Meta Bravely Default and it did it in supreme fashion.

The final boss literally targeting [you] rather than the characters and making you delete your save was fucking bonkers.
>>
>>381819350
Tiz finally winning the Agnesbowl in BS was the most justified thing I have experienced in gaming.

That guy has gone through some unbelivable shit. The universe fucking owed him his Pope-pussy
>>
>>381838089
how will they top themselves next
>>
>>381835559
I disagree, I thought fighting the bosses again was one of the most fun parts of the game; obviously traveling all over and checking off the plot points was annoying, but the fights themselves were great in chapters 6, 7 and 8. Having a combat system with so many options felt kinda pointless to me for the first half of the game when you were nuking all random battles and doing really standard boss fights anyway, but the game got really fun when they started to actually design hard boss combinations in the last 3rd and you needed to actually figure out a strategy for your party.

The backstory you got from each battle was nice, too.

I find it interesting that it's 200 years in the future, which is also where Agnes+the Kaiser were sent with the Holy Pillar the first time around. At least according to a NPC in Al-Khampis.

Sure wish that shit was translated.

i 100%ed the first one, but never got the second. Is it true that Ringabel is pretty much not in it at all?
>>
I genuinely cant understand the hate for the timelooping/world hopping in BD

Sure it got a bit tedious the 4th time around but the sublte differences in every new world combined with a slowly increasing sinister undertone made me love it.
>>
>>381840868
>Is it true that Ringabel is pretty much not in it at all?

False, but he is not playable. His role in the game is pretty much the next hook for whenever they decide to make another game.
>>
>>381840868
Nah he's there but he's more in the background. He does get a prominent role in the story though and helps out for one fight, but him and Airy are too busy saving the multiverses.
Also he pretty much dropped the sequel hook if they ever decide to make Third.

>>
>>381841615
The MCs had great VA in my opinion. Minor characters and Emil/Praline were pretty shit.
>>
>>381840791
Well i'll go back to it some day, it wasn't even the true boss. I was just so tired of the looping I kind of got bored
I even didn't get one of my jobs which kinda sucked and could never get it again.
I'll probably just do a 4 Valkyrie strat and get through the boss with no issue if they can survive
>>
>>381840341
Who gets in?

Tiz is most MC
Edea is most relevant
Agnes is most iconic
Magnolia is most Magnolia
Yew is least relevant
Ringabel would fit best with how obnoxious everyone is in Dissidia, also he can fight Alternis with the same moveset
>>
I'm playing it right now, and honestly, I'm loving everything about it. From the setting to the characters to the gameplay, etc. I admit, the story is a bit simplistic but someone said it gets better after the third town so I'm looking forward to it. Also, I think I have the privilege of not having played a lot of jrpgs so there's that. I'll probably leave this thread to get away from spoilers.
>>
>>381842750
It would probably be Tiz because of his MC status, like what they did with Ace and Ramza. Ringabel would be nice because he's literally part of the multi-dimension police so he wouldn't be hard to include. Edea is they wanted to go with a waifu character.
The real question would be figuring out a play style.
>>
>>381843110
Completely RNG moveset with massive pool from all jobs?
>>
>>381842750

Edea probably. Another girl rep, comes with an obvious candidate for chaos counterpart (Ringalternis) who also already has dipped his toes into dimension hopping.
>>
>>381786421

>>
Is Agnes supposed to be plain looking? Edea mentioned she looked a bit boring, and I don't know how she lost the pageant considering the vestal garb shows way more skin than what the other skanks were wearing.
>>
>>381843273
>He played the censored version
>>
>>381843273
I don't think she's supposed to be plain looking, but it's more that she doesn't put a ton of effort into her appearance.
"Agnes wore sexy clothes. It was awesome." -Ringabel
>>
>>381843273
She definitely comes off as boring and uninteresting so I guess plain fits her well, although she made the point that she'd be an easy target for assassination if she did stand out. Her one note about muh crystals and muh mission helps push that.
Besides not wearing the bikini, the only other reason she lost is because sluttown is literally trends: the town and if you weren't using the latest hairpins and nail polish you were a fucking loser that no one cared for.

>>381817379

What? The second half has amazing boss fights. And yeah the main story gets repetitive but if you did all of the side quests you'd know each loop is quite different.
>>
>>381843110
Make them somewhat similar to Gabranth's style. Replace their Ex Meter with Brave meter. Player switches between a defensive and super vulnerable style (when in default) and an offensive and incredibly aggressive style (when maxing Brave).
