What are your thoughts and opinions on the turn-based mechanic? Is it outdated and needs to be retired completely, or are there still games/genres that can use it well and keep it fresh?
>>
Game?
>>
>>381778227
Its fine. People just lack the attention span for it.
>>
>>381778512
XCom 2 with a mod.

>>381778609
How do you feel about franchises that started off with turn-based and used them up until a certain entry and then switched to a different style of gameplay ever since?
>>
>>381778227
Literally has the face of Napoleon dynamite with the disproportionate body of that tiny headed battleborn faggot. What shitty game is this?
>>
>>381778896

How do I feel about it?

Well it sucks but when they do it theyre not going for old fans anymore and thats something a lot of businesses do so its hard to blame them. Ive been a fan of FF since 2 on SNES and my last FF game was 13. I did not buy 15 and dont plan on it.

Basically it really sucks but its ok, there are still a lot of options for fans.

IMO RPGs are more fun when they have a more active battle system, though how much more active depends. Final Fantasy XII's style where it's still ATB but you can move around is how FF should be. Leave the fully action RPG stuff to Kingdom Hearts.

>>381778913
XCom 2 with a mod.

The thing about turn based is it comes from D&D and other P&P tabletops, people still play them to this day so I don't see people getting tired of turn based rpgs, besides the mechanic has some merits when the games require some thinking or stategy like in SMT rather than "attack and heal".

>IMO RPGs are more fun when they have a more active battle system, though how much more active depends. Final Fantasy XII's style where it's still ATB but you can move around is how FF should be. Leave the fully action RPG stuff to Kingdom Hearts.

Yeah well FF12 isnt very good to me either. I liked FF before they made a main series entry an online only game and before they started to shake up the battles too much. Youre free to have your opinion im just saying i was alienated.
>>
>>381781063
I started with FF1 on the NES and for RPGs turn-based was fine for a while but then it started to highlight how slow RPGs were in every aspect, especially when the attacks started getting flashy and taking up to a minutes or so to play out. Hybrid and full-action styles help keep at least the most important part of the game from getting too dull.
>>
>>381782154

If you say so. Im still not bored of turn based games after all these years.

For some reason i doubt you started with FF1 though. Too convenient.
>>
Turn-based is necessary for different kinds of games. Not everything needs to be an action game. Image chess if turn-based was "retired completely."
>>
>>381782381
>For some reason i doubt you started with FF1 though. Too convenient.

What does that mean? Because I'm not a big fan of turn-based in RPGs anymore it means I never touched one that was turn-based?
>>
>>381778227
There will always be games that keep it fresh, you don't need to revolutionize the system, just make a good game around it.

If anyone doesn't like turn-based combat they can fuck off and play their button mashers.
>>
>>381782586
no one started with FF1 on NES, not on this board. The average /v/ poster is 14-20 years old.

Turn based is still the ideal form of strategy games. The RTS experiment has failed and devolved into MOBAs.
>>
>>381782648
There's occasionally good turn based games, but for the most part the people that play them like them because of their inability to be good at anything else.
>>
>>381782560
What a stupid example.
>>
>>381782560
>chess match starts
>both players start slamming their pieces against each other making gun and explosion noises until it degenerates into throwing the pieces at each other until someone gives up or gets injured

I'd pay to watch that, especially if it was a tournament.
>>
>>381778227
Of course it isn't outdated. Is waiting in line for something outdated? Not everything has to be action packed running at 110% speed
>>
Turn based gameplay as a concept can't be "outdated" because there are unique things that can be done in turn based games that could not be done otherwise. I'm not going to say turn-based games are better than action games, because it depends on how well each are implemented, and even what you're in the mood for at the time.
But think about, say, Fire Emblem as an action game. As much would be lost as gained.

turnbased can be good, but everyone sucks at it especially JRPGs
Games like Persona 5 are complete ass
>>
>>381782586

No it means i just really doubt you started with ff1 on nes and i didnt really see what that had to do with anything other than to try to give your post cred. Youre reading into my comment too much, i dont really care.

Im just a tired and alienated Squaresoft fan.
>>
>>381783008
>alienated solely because of a gameplay style change

Now this is autism.
>>
>>381782735

This is incorrect. Im good at games like classic ninja gaiden and what not. Do you have any evidence for your claim?
>>
>>381782735
No, people like turn based games because they like turn based games, just like people like shooting games because they like shooting games.

I've yet to meet anyone who only plays turn based games anyway, but I know a bunch of babies who won't touch turn based games no matter what.

Turn based is only shit in stuff like JRPGs where there is no movement element involved and players are just doing the same shit over and over again. SRPGs are the patrician choice.

>>
>>381778227
The real question is, Will Phoenix point save the genre?
>>
>>381783147

>hes making assumptions now

Why are you turning this into a fight? Honest question.

It wasnt just the gameplay style change. Every FF past X has felt less and less like FF to me. Characters and music, its all worse. If you dont like an old fans opinion, dont ask.
>>
>>381783229

100% true post right here.

Literally only see fags turn their nose up at them but anyone that plays them plays other genres too.
>>
>>381778896
>>381779527

I actually don't hate FF going action as much as some people do. New games, new audience, and the "series" was never connected anyway. Squareenix still gave us Bravely Default, which could have been called Final Fantasy and it wouldn't have changed anything, and DQ is still going strong.

What I do hate is turning the FF7 remake into an action game. Fans of FF7 were fans of that genre, so why change the genre and target the remake at a whole different audience?

He's done some Skyrim mods as well, and he's (slowly) still working on the XCom mod, wanting to add more options like different types of lower body clothing (speedos, thongs, trunks, and even commando).

What's really cool is the XCom devs contacted him and praised him for his mod, they really liked it.
>>
>>381785175
>this amount of assuming and projecting
>>
>>381778896

Fallout 3 made me hate the transition, New Vegas made me think maybe it would be okay after all, and 4 stripped me of all delusions of optimism.
>>
>>381778227
As someone who primarily plays action games, fighting games, platformers, etc., just stuff in general that's not turn-based, there is NOTHING wrong with turn-based gameplay if it requires actual strategy and has a lot of depth to it. Generally, I think TBS games are better about this than, say, JRPGs, but SMT is quite good if you're looking for a combat system where there's certainly more to it than just hitting the attack function constantly.
>>
>>381788547
This. Turn-based in RPGs is usually boring because you're just watching two groups bounce in place while you select an action and watch them hit each other, usually just with normal attacks. In strategy games it's a lot more fun and dynamic because you need to plan routes, decide on cover or an action, keep in mind the enemy's movements, keep track of your abilities and when/where to use them
>>
>>381785935
>What's really cool is the XCom devs contacted him and praised him for his mod, they really liked it.
This sounds in-character for them (they did hang lewd viper art in their office) but I'm gonna need a source for this

Yeah, I'll agree that that's WAY too much. The XCom2 mod is perfect, though. Just wish he had options for smooth body and virility carpet along with the lightly-hairy already in.
>>
Its the only genre I find actually makes a game still somewhat difficult and I can actually lose, alot of games dont even have a lose state anymore, or there is no stakes. Yes its RNG, good player skill comes from swinging that RNG to be more in your favor, and knowing the tactics and moves you should make under different circumstances to get the best result, but even then its not a guarantee of victory, its only increasing the odds.
>>
>>381793668
>a lot of games dont even have a lose state anymore

I blame this on games abandoning lives and making it so that you can retry as much as you like. It stops being about skill and becomes the player just running at the problem until they luck out.
