I just played the Last of Us for the first time, it is so fucking dull, a giant escort mission with sub par stealth and shooting mechanics . The only good thing was the environments looked cool

Why is this crap so hyped?
>>
>>381762427
Your taste and gaming knowledge is simply below average.
>>
>>381762427
It's literally a normie-bait, released just when the latest zomby-boom was going at its hottest.

I never expected it to be anything else than an overhyped, generic Uncharted clone, but it was even worse when I finally got to play it myself last year. Paid mere 5€ for it at local fleamarket, and swapped it for store credit soon after in you-know-what game store.
>>
Why do plebs consistently assert that escort missions are inherently bad?
>>
>>381762716
On the contrary. Anyone thinking that this shit 1) counts as a "game", and 2) is "enjoyable" or even "well done", seriously needs to check his head.
>>
Because not everybody shares your tastes and subjective views.
>>
>>381762760
>memers acting like they've ever ever been good

also TLOU can't be an escort mission since your companion is invincible
>>
>>381763037
Play more games.
>>
It was normie bait that "journalists" and "critics" lapped up because it had "mature" elements like aping children of men.
>>
>>381762782
>counts as a "game"
Ah, so you're just one of those retards.
Well good to know.
>>
This board is so fucking butt-hurt this game did well.

Guys, its just part of the movie-game cross over. You can't expect the mechanics to be super-well-done when most of the effort clearly went into pushing the ps4 graphically and the story.

Does that bother you? Don't play it then?

It's like you just want to be mad.
Oh wait.
>>
>>381763273
>children of men
>original in some way
You have to be 18+ to post here kid.

such as?

Because bad pacing is apparently a feature

tell us OP, what hype you ?
what is the best game you ever played ?
>>
>>381763413
excuse me that I want my interactive media to have engaging gameplay, instead of slooow walking sections with tons of story exposition dumped on me.

>having a AI companion who can actually handle itself is now an "escort mission"
>"i just didn't have fun with a game i knew i wouldn't have fun with: the post"

glad we've sunk this low
>>
>>381762427
I feel the exact same way. I think the acting was the highest point of the game, personally, but that speaks volumes about the game itself. I still can't understand why people love it so much. Most other games people love like this, like Bethesda games, or Mass Effect, or whatever, i can at least see where they get there love. There are tons of better third-person shooters out there.
>>
>>381763794
I would also like to point out that i was hyped as fuck for this game to come out, followed it for years, and bought a PS3 for it.
>>
>>381763717
I liked Uncharted and thought I'd like this too.

>shooting in any other game: counts as gameplay

This meme is kinda stale

Why bother naming a good example you haven't played, you'll just go "n-n-n-nuh-uh that one sucks, probably!"
Escort mission is a simple concept that you have to prevent another NPC from dying. That's it. If you can't shut your buggy little eyes and imagine how this can be used well (very well, in fact) then you might just be a little stupid.
>>
>>381765368

look I can do it too

>>

>>381763717
to be fair, the whole game's story IS about escorting Ellie so OP isn't completely wrong.
but boy did they do it so bad at it
>Ellie is invisible and invincible to enemies
>can't command Ellie to do anything other than being a plot character

at least she's not a braindead AI who shoots and attacks every enemies on her sight
>>
>people still asshurt over this game's success in 2017
>>
>>381762427
Because Sonegros have nothing else to play.
>>
>>381763470
>You can't expect the mechanics to be super-well-done when most of the effort clearly went into pushing the ps4 graphically and the story
then they're doing it wrong because there's barely any difference between PS3 version and PS4 version
>>
Because people like Uncharted and TLOU is a better Uncharted.
That's the only reason I like it. The setting and interactions are also neat.

TLOU really is not like Uncharted. Uncharted is faster, louder, much more bombastic set-pieces, very very platformy, much bigger scale.
>>
>>381767689
Yeah but it's the same people who play both and their greatest aspect is the cinematic gameplay.
They both follow the setup of combat -> climbing/walking -> story -> combat, and so on, but TLOU does the walking parts better than Uncharted does the climbing because you also scavenge in TLOU. The crafting system does TLOU well.

See, the real thing about TLoU is that it's successful among people who are bad at video games. It's a narrative driven game, but the gameplay doesn't do too well to support it. First off, it's easy to break a lot of the sequences where you're supposed to be wary and sneaky and all that shite. Like, when you're first escaping the soldiers, they act it up like you've got to crouch down and be careful to avoid them, but if you blitz past your friendly NPCs, you can actually rush through that segment real easily. The only times where the game really makes a case for you to be held back is when any step off the beaten path gets you insta-killed, like in the intro sequence.

The enemies don't really hold up either. "Oh shit here's these trained mercs or bandits or whatever that you've got to be wary about." Well, even with ammo concerns, it's easy to blow those baddies away with half decent aim. They knew this too, as the only possible reason for the game's abysmal aim sensitivity has to have been to prevent you from wiping out entire scores of baddies without a second thought. Then you've got the Clickers, where in the first interaction, they're this terrifying force that you have to be oh so quiet around or they will hunt you down like a bloodthirsty dog. Then you're given back control, and you're chucking rocks at their heads for fun.

And I get that there are higher difficulties that are meant to put a pressure on players, but it's never in any way that severely affects the game. Listen Mode was something I didn't really even miss while playing Survivor, and the lack of checkpoints in Grounded weren't really that bad if you've already played through the previous difficulty. Sure, the fewer supplies makes you sneak around a bit more, but if you were already ripping and tearing through the apocalypse, sneaking is still EZ mode.

The only people that loved it are people who sucked at vidga and didn't break the fragile connection between gameplay and story

Its a great game for casuals.

I didn't mind it the first time round, but it was a huge drag. This, and uncharted, have great potential for gameplay and fun. But these devs like to hamper it down with large sections of walking and talking and just constant exposition.

It has an audience and I haven't got much against then bit it is just boring casual shit that does a good job in making something seem really advanced and intelligent when it's just decent storytelling in a generic but smooth game.
>>
>>381762427
>when you've been here long enough to /v/ hate the game, then become split over it, and now like it because redditors with casual tastes have flooded in over the years

This is suffering
