If you're a Zelda fan, I think it's worth playing through once, but that's it. I've not touched the game since watching the credits roll in 2011. The beginning of the game is by far the most boring part. The dungeons in particular get better as you go on. I enjoyed the controls though, for the most part. My gripes were the annoying companion, excruciatingly slow and boring intro, and the menu that pops up every time you pick up a small item that you already have 35 of. If those things sound worth it to you, go for it.

A few things to consider.

1) Nintendo HAD to attempt 1:1 sword controls, even though the tech wasn't quite there yet. People would have always complained if Nintendo didn't try it. Yes the would.
2) It was an attempt to take the series in a fresh direction. People didn't like it, mostly because of the linearity and lack of overworld (which Nintendo took to heart and gave us BotW next). But somethings stuck around, like the stamina bar and crafting.
3) The Wii sold about 100 million units by the time SS was released, Nintendo couldn't ignore the fact that entire new demographs owned a Wii. SS was designed to accommodate the notion that SS would be many people's first Zelda, which is why there so much hand holding (title screen even has an instructional video for fuck's sake).

Despite the negativity, Skyward Sword is still a solid gaming experience.

As someone who was playing games at the time I can tell you right now that NES Zelda blew people's minds with it's nonlinearity. Being able to go anywhere you want and make your own personal adventure was the game's biggest hook.

And yes, I know there were other nonlinear games at the time, but Zelda was high profile and actually GOOD.

It depends on the game and its director/team, faggot. Metroid Prime 3 was made during the Wii era and didn't have that philosophy. But then they gave Metroid to Team Ninja and Sakamoto and it ended up being the opposite.

They didn't, though. Skyward Sword only uses 8-directional canned animations and a couple of special moves for combat. 1:1 control stops as soon as the sword is swung. the actual combat is a shallow mini-game that is reused hundreds of times with very little variation.
It wasn't because Wii Motion Plus couldn't handle 1:1 either, Wii Sports Resort showed that it could, extremely well even.
Skyward Sword had unfun combat because of poor design decisions.
