As an old fan that used to browse the general back when it was in its high and somebody who actually got what the game was going for, I can tell you these things:

The game is piss easy, which made it easy for a lot of people to play. Then when all the LPers finished it for those who just can't play video games, it didn't become mandatory to play it to know about it

The music was obviously more important than any of the visuals. The game would've definitely not been as memorable if Toby wasn't a decent composer. This part is the most important since it's what invokes the feelings of a fan to give a shit

Because the writing has so many holes in it, it's a huge case of Willing Suspension of Disbelief just working. Many people who don't actually read major works and understand what a good story is just go along with the faults because there's no reason to look into or criticize them. Nobody cared about that aspect, sometimes even great stories nobody still cares. Like Toy Story for instance, nobody questions the fact Andy's mom is single and raising a growing son and baby girl

The hype of the fanbase in general caught on like wild fire, so people ended up praising it just for the sake of praising it without understanding what it's actually about. They say "don't kill everyone, they didn't do anything wrong" when the game presents a lot of the characters as actively hunting the MC down.
