I know this is a meme but Why are games so heavily downgraded sometimes? Whats the actual reason?

Like Rainbow Six Seige looked playable at E3 but its very different from what we got in retail. Why do they do this

Artists make 1 set of assets. Early in development they think it'll work, but once actual programmers get their hands on it they usually knock it back to reality. A really famous example is Bioshock Infinite, where at E3 the programmer outright told the team they knew it would never have worked to begin with. It's only going to keep getting worse from now. Since developers still have to work with the old XBone/PS4 instead of their shill editions, we're still stuck with 2012 hardware well into a new generation.

VR tries to push the envelope of getting people on board with more modern hardware, but the price-gate hurts normies too much to bother.

Also anybody surprised at how honest Ubi was this year? Both Asscreed and Farcry didn't have flashy scripted demos and just showed the games playing how you'd expect them to. Farcry looks okay, Asscreed looks like garbage, nothing to hide really.

I'm assuming most of the thread is just angry kids who know nothing about the behind-the-scenes side of the industry, so I'll give the real answer.

What you see at E3 is a completely separate entity from the final game. It's a slice which has been separated and then groomed as it's own product.

I'll use a food pun, since that's what we do here. Imagine you're part of a team working on a pizza. You've got your base and some sauce, but you need to show your progress to potential customers and the current product isn't very impressive. So instead of working on the entire pizza, you cut out one slice and put all your manpower into that. You hammer it with all your best ingredients and show it off. Problem is, you find that you don't have enough of those ingredients. So rather than giving that treatment to the entire pizza, you have to skimp in some areas.

Blizzard have been the ones to really take this concept and run with it. They make extensive use of social media and twitch/youtube celebs to build hype for their upcoming releases. Take hearthstone for example. Was shilled to oblivion by twitch streamers who were the only ones allowed to their super secret special snowflake beta. It made all the retards want it after watching the cool kids "have fun" with it for several months. Hearthstone itself costed almost nothing to make as far as budget goes, its a mobile game. But its literally a cash cow, all because of marketing.

Performance mainly, increasing performance is the last stage of game creation.

When a model is too complex it lowers fps, when you use huge image maps with lots of detail it lowers fps.

A leader of a project has to take the work his modelers and artists create and decide if the quality is worth the fps drop. Usually they make them cut poly count down or make the image maps smaller resolutions to get better performance.

So although you think it's ok to add lots of cool stuff and allow people to turn it on and off they wont, they will turn it all on and bitch instead. You even see people with shitty computers bitching that an AAA 2016 game runs at 40 fps on their machine, like it's the games fault.

So at the end of development some guy comes in and drops the reality checks and they remove stuff that looks nice but will cause a shitstorm on the steam forums.
