The tl;dr of a plot twist is God (The Authority) is actually old and frail and held captive by the the ruling body of Heaven. When the Metatron is destroyed and God is released, he dies on his own almost immediately.

The whole story is basically about young teens growing up and facing harsh realities about life and determining to change things. Most of the time, people are trying to force the main characters to conform to the old way of doing things, even though it's killing reality. The characters overcome these obstacles one by one, but in doing so, face yet more harsh truths, because of course life isn't fair.

Some of the ending scenes are the most bitter and most sweet of any book I've ever read.

Written by a well-known atheist. Wrote the book to be an open rebellion against traditional religious dogma and institutions. Believes the "good" religious believers don't form institutions or seek power over others.

I don't get why people think a CREATOR does not exist. That's like saying there is no life in our universe just because we haven't interacted with any outside our own solar system.
