If it's a team-based game, having all different types of players thrown into one game means victory or defeat can usually be attributed to luck of the draw, depending on if the game matches you or the enemy team with total idiots or seasoned players. In heavily team-based games one person usually can't totally carry their group.

Even if it's a game where you can carry, it's less fun if the enemies are so far above you in skill that you know early on the match is a loss or so far below you that there's never any tension or competition.

Ideally having a ranked mode and a regular mode can fill both options.
