Release order is always the correct way to do it. It gives you context that you wouldnt have otherwise, such as how the series naturally progresses mechanics-wise. You get a hell of a lot more out of Metal Gear Solid 3 if you play 1 and 2 beforehand. Imagine, for example, watching Fire Walk With Me before you ever saw Twin Peaks. It would make no god damn sense.
