Gohan wasn't an autist like Goku, and despite the fact that he could have easily of surpassed his father as a fighter(And did multiple times), he wanted to be the opposite of Goku when it came time to be an adult: A functional member of society that didn't need to rely on his wife's father, and a dad that was actually part of their child's life and didn't arbitrarily conscript them as a toddler to be a child soldier.

Goku didn't really force Gohan into much of anything aside fighting Perfect Cell. Gohan jumped at the chance to train each time it was offered and even preemptively wanted to attack Cell when piccolo was getting his ass beat vs imperfect cell.

Let's look at the track record:

Goku died vs Raditz and had his son abducted by piccolo. Goku was stuck in the hospital when his son decided to go off to namek and had to run over there as quick as possible to save his son from death. Goku went off to explore space while knowing that Chi Chi would take good care of him while he was away. Gohan himself went to approach frieza's ship when he came to earth. Really, the only real flaw of Goku's parenting was just not being around, which wasn't really his fault most of the time.
