Anyone who thinks this game is truly remarkable has no fucking clue about game design. The entire layout of the map and level design are terrible and only serve ONE purpose: To make the world feel huge. And it is huge. But why make a world huge when you don't have enough interesting things to fill it with? After the 100th copy pasted platform segment i got really fucking bored. Don't get me wrong, there's some really good things in this game, namely bosses, but it's all buried under so much shit design. And i'm saying that as someone who usually likes exploration in video games. The dull color palette, layouts and visual style really don't help. Exploring the same samey environments for 30+ hours (Did i mention the awful MAP system?) just gets stale. The only people who think this is good are people who think like this: "Bigger world = more content = more game = more hours, for 14,99€! = better game" but honestly this game would've been 10 times better as a more condensed 8h or so experience.

Pretty bummed that i wasted 15 bucks on this shit.

I'm playing through it for the first time and it's pretty damn good. I'm loving the ambiance and the atmosphere, and how varied each area is. There's also so many unique NPC's you meet multiple times throughout the world and it's making my head spin. Also paranoid because I don't know if there's like side quests associated with them or do you just meet them randomly.

Agree hard, I have like 50 hours into Valdis Story and that was before they released the two extra characters.

The dashing and blocking systems in Valdis Story annoy me though, and the final boss can be unbeatable on harder difficulties if you have a bad build with bad armor, and you can easily get bad armor if you allow one of the towns to get evacuated, which is easy to do on a first time playthrough

Jesus, this room is fucked up. You have to repel attacks off the centipede in order to cross over the spikes and then you have to wall jump over platforms that also have spikes on top and then continue to repel attacks until you get to the next platform. If you fuck up once, it's back to the start.
And all you get is a lousy soul vessel shard

Especially nier, for persona it's mitigated a lot by the fact that the fanbase is much larger, but it's really the exception. As someone who has never played a metroidvania before and doesn't really play platformers, how is this game?

Just finished first playthrough. This game was really fucking fun and enjoyable. I'm honestly surprised to see so many people shitting on it.

I thought the game was alright, but I've got some criticisms
-Having a map marker take up a badge slot is annoying and adds nothing
-Having to wait until halfway through the level to get the map and then having it only update when you sit on a bench is also annoying and adds nothing, it just makes you have to backtrack to a bench in the middle of exploring if you want to check if you've missed any paths
-Most of the badges are garbage. Doing optional segments feels very unrewarding when they give you a badge that costs way too many slots and/or is either incredibly situational or far too conditional. Getting every single one of those grubs gets you a shitty sword beam that does fuck-all damage compared to just your normal swing and can only be used at full health. There's no reason not to just use the mantis claw badge that gives you better range instead.
-The few badges that aren't shit tend to make certain mechanics or other badges completely unnecessary. Why would I bother giving myself thumb cancer trying to hold down the attack button while jumping to execute a WOW BIG HIT NAIL ART when I could just use the quick slash charm and do the same amount of damage in less time and with less of the aforementioned thumb cancer?
-I never felt actually challenged by any of the bosses except Radiance. The dream bosses seem like complete horseshit until you figure out the specific method you need to use to cheese them, at which point whatever skill you have doesn't even factor in. Lost Kin seemed impossible until I equipped the charm that auto-kills his faggy ghosts, and then it was a mind-numbingly easy fight. The Hollow Knight, the boss the game is fucking named after, is a little bitch that takes ten seconds to kill and is basically just there to give you a five second breather before your next Radiance attempt. It got to the point where I could practically close my eyes and just button mash until I heard Hornet stab him.

For some reason, I like having to find the map maker. However, the compass should just be automatic, and the quill should fill the map out in real time, I feel. The "where the fuck do I go" of not having a map at all is kinda cool when you first enter the area, I feel real satisfaction when finally finding him, but that should be the end of it. Sitting on benches and having a slot taken by a compass doesn't add much.
