What're you talking about? 2017 has been a really good year for games so far.

People bitch and complain constantly but the past 20 years have all contained some really amazing releases, it's ignorant to look at any time period and go "EVERYTHING MADE THEN WAS SHIT"

games objectively became shit because of focus shifting from dev time to marketing. that being said you can still enjoy garbage just dont pay full value. i only buy the new garbage if its 75%+ off / publisher cant make any money off of it anymore.

Last generation was horrible.
Cinematic bullshit at full force, and no place to run to.
Now the games are STARTING to get good again because there are smaller studios starting to appear and do nice lil things.
But 2005-2010 was an horrid drought.

generic brown&bloom FPS is also no longer as prominent as before

low effort indie games are a dime a dozen and have to be truly unique to get recognition now

pay2win mobile games are finally getting a bad reputation among the mainstream, although they still exist, it seems like they are also sort of dying as of late

What design was there? Everything was extremely basic because the games were basic. Often just a life system with 1-ups, life bars, infinite continues. There's not much to criticize because there's really just not that much there at all. Depends what kind of genres we're talking about but ultimately lots of the genres we still look at today were in their infancy of design
