I then repeat the process a few more dozens of times until it's dead, then head off to talk to a glowy ghost squid who said he was expecting me quite a bit earlier, while stepping on oversized grubs.

It's a fun class but having to resummon your army after it gets wiped out on a boss fight with no corpses around is a major ball ache. Storming through acts with your massive army casting the fuck out of corpse explosion and taking down dozens of enemies with each explosion and using them to replace your fallen skeletons is 10/10 though.

Originally the necro was useless against all bosses. I think they even had bonus damage against minions.

Half of my early d2 memories (pre expansion even) are about spending up to an hour hacking lesser and prime evils with a recently purchased axe.

Duriel being difficult is mostly just a result of inexperience. Any reasonable build played well will have an easy time. Even "special" builds like iron maiden, thorns, summoning druids, blade assassins or barbarians won't have much trouble if you know what you are doing.

Minions still do reduced damage to bosses and take extra damage. The difference is that skeletons have life regeneration now and get massive damage from upgrading raise skeleton. Before, they'd quickly whittle away and only got damage from skeleton mastery (+2 per level, which is fucking nothing). Back then, blood golem and revives were the only real summoning choices.

Help me out guys. I just realized I've never played through the game on my own. I have the itch to get through Hell in single player using only self found shit.

What build would you recommend for that other than sorc and summon Necro? I was thinking javazon or zeal paladin?

Summon Necro is actually mostly terrible for what you want to do solely because of Hell Ancients.

Best classes for how easy they are to complete would probably be Trap Sin and Javazon. Hammerdin and Sorc are good choices too.
Lots of people swear by Elemetal Druid, but I don't like the hitbox behavior on Tornado, which becomes your main skill in Hell since there's too many fire immunes to stick with Fissure.

Don't pick Barb unless you REALLY want to be a singer. He has no other AoE when you're restricting yourself to self found gear because Whirlwind requires you get fucking good weapons

No matter what you pick, remember that you get skill resets per difficulty, you'll probabaly have to use them.
