I've never played FFXI, but from what I hear there is way more variety in job design, which I am super envious of. Red Mage in XIV is just a generic ranged DPS caster that occasionally goes into melee for five seconds during its rotation. The aspect of it fusing White and Black Magic is completely lost.

If they add Blue Mage, it will just be a generic tank or healer too. Hybrids aren't allowed. Every job is designed to fit a rigid MMO triangle meta that makes everything play the same.

Astrologian essentially being Time Mage is a good example of this. It is just a generic healer that draws RNG powerups. They couldn't even bother trying to include Haste or something to increase a character's auto attack speed temporarily, or a Slow debuff for enemies or something.

You don't even feel like you're using the jobs they are named after. All of the tanks might as well be the exact same job

I've never really played other MMOs, but I hate this trinity thing. It makes everything repetitive and uninteresting. Every dungeon, every boss, every raid, it's all the same because of how homogeneous the cast is. It makes it hard to even get excited for new jobs.

I'd agree. SC and MB were what made their (arguably slow) combat system stand out and be so fucking engaging. It also FORCED people to communicate, which I believe was a driving force behind the community, and how rich it was.

High level FF XI, and even up to that point, had always a reliance on the trinity.
There really wasn't much of a choice for a tank. You had pld, that was pretty much it. The community immediately managed to push war and sam into dps only, the only other useful tank was nin, which was utterly useless at tanking gods/hnms and even had trouble hoöding hate on simple grind mobs without a proper thf.

Then you needed a healer, and mostlx only two jobs really managed to do that job: whm and rdm. If one actually decided to play rdm as a healer one wouldn't really play him any different than whm. Both would try to paralyze/dia/sloe the enemy and then heal, only that rdm was a bit more effective for the first part and whm more effective on the second part.

Than most people simply refused to do anything without a support, so you either had a rdm or a brd. Given, these two played very differently in this role, however, the scarcity of both made everything a hell until more supportive jobs like cor released.

And last the dd. Of course you needed them, lest you can't kill the mobs. But now there's the problem of incredibly retarded balancing. War and mnk simply blew everything out of the water for the longest time. Thf was hardly useful outside of grinding, hate control and being a TH bitch, aa even though it has good spike damage, the ratio as to how much damage he did and how much TP the mob gained was just ridiculously dumbagaibst the thf. Other dd jobs had big problems as well, the saddest one being loldrg who literally never lost its lol status even after a rework (at least as long as it was 75 max lvl).

I liked the high job count, but acting like this game didn't have the holy trinity, and then even saying it had much variwty between the jobs/roles is beyond retarded.

You did miss the boat for getting the original experience that everyone talks about when pining for the old days. Having said that, it's still a better game than most others in the same genre. The only caveat I'd give to a new player is that nobody parties for leveling now since it barely takes any time to max it. Instead, you can summon NPC party members that are pretty much better than other players at your level since they don't need to worry about equipment and getting spells while leveling. It's kind of lonely, but people still party up for Capacity(Job) Points after they hit level 99 on jobs.
