Unless it literally is your very only choice. Get a normal Slim model, crack it, and enjoy your best console since PS2.

There's over 80 million of them in the wild, you'll always be able to find one in your lifetime. Unlikely the prices will even go up by much, similarly to PS2.

Worst case, PS3 emulation also been making progress. Not quite ready yet, but in a few years the actual system likely won't be needed anymore.

On a related note, they already stopped production last May in Japan, but still stocks left for a while.

As for being worth it, not like there's any shortage of games for it. But lot of them were either re-released for PS4 or are available on PC. Depends on if you care for the remaining things (there's a fair deal, but given limited time to play everything you may not care enough to go there).

At this point, PS3 is THE definitive Metal Gear -platform, thanks to ALL its main-series games being available on it (+ MGS4 is still an exclusive). It's also a magnificent JRPG platform with access to all FF games up to Lighting Returns, and even Persona 5 was just released on it.

Then there's stuff like the Yakuza -series, Ace Combat games, numerous other HD remasters and the whole PS Classics catalog online. PLUS, all PS3 console versions still do run PS1 discs; the PS2 backwards compatibility was cut after the first "Fat" version, but you can implement a-OK level PS2 emulation on Slims, if you jailbreak it first.

The Emotion Engine chip (which was part of the PS2's core architecture) was expensive to put into each PS3 unit. When they wanted to redesign the system with the Slim, they wanted to cut costs so they could drop the price (and rebrand the thing so they could drop the awful Spiderman font). PS2 BC used extra hardware parts and increased the cost of each units, when came the time to cut prices they decided to cut hardware

This does bring us to making the PS4 not even be able to do PS1 feel pretty dumb though. I mean sure, they'd have to redesign the emulator to work on PS4 but surely it shouldn't be a big deal to port code for them. PS2 would likely need more work on the other hand but perfectly doable, but PS3 may be too much for the PS4 to do software-only.

Then again, their PS1 emulator actually has low rating when it comes to accuracy (the ones we have on PC are better).
