I find it difficult to see Atari compete in the console space. There's already the PS4 and X1 and their upgraded counterparts for those who want to play multi-plats and console exclusives in their living room, the Switch to play Nintendo games, indies and some console games anywhere, and the PC has the largest game library and the most efficient multimedia platform.
How is Atari going to compete against all that?

They would need unique first/third party launch titles to go with it. The Atari would either have to be more powerful than the Xbox X(which would jack up the price more than it), would have to have a lot of third-party support, or exclusives for it or would have to have a gimmick that works with it. Plus they would need millions to fund this mystery console's development and launch, with no gurantee it will even sell in the first place.

Curious to see how they will pull off. They can't ride on nostalgia/brand recognition as deeply as Nintendo. We'll see what they do.

I highly doubt it will be an actual console with physical release games due to their lack of funds. But how could it be another emulation box? I mean haven't they made like 8 versions of that plug and play shit? I started out with Atari but trying to go back and play some of those games, they look fucking atrocious . That's supposedly what Valve are doing for their next-gen Steam Machines, rumors have been circulating about them getting a Ryzen+Vega SOC for a while.
But they've also been publicly investing heavily in drivers for AMD hardware which is required since AMD's own official drivers are so bad.

Its possible this is just somebody building a gen-2 Steam Machine, slapping an Atari logo on it, and putting out some games for it. If they try to go on their own they'll have no games, and no drivers.

If they could attract some of those start up devs who make those 15-30 indie titles on Steam they could probably break into the market with that. A lot of those games are niche and cult, but it could be those devs opportunity to sell on a platform without heavy piracy.

The industry's weakness right is Dev cycle speed and tech overturn. There are places to break in but they'll need to undercut, they can't come in on price without drawing hardware and feature comparisons and they won't have the user base to fight that.

The 290 had some kind of problem, but everything else is right about where it should be relative to one another except for the 480 which is on top of the 1070.

Vulkan performance tends to be even better.

The guys Valve has working on the open source stack are really earning their paychecks. The RadV Vulkan driver has been picking up speed. Its already as fast as or faster than the official AMD Vulkan driver in some tests and can be a lot faster than the Mesa RadeonSI OpenGL driver.

It just still needs more performance tuning as certain shader effects really slow it down right now.

D3D11->OpenGL ports are a joke because its difficult to port software optimized to the extremely non-standard D3D workflow onto a Standard platform.

At least as far as high-level standards go. Once you have access to a low-level standard you can essentially remove the performance tax as seen in some of the Linux-exclusive Vulkan versions several of the newer Linux games have received.
