It's time to be honest with ourselves: these games haven't held up as well as you think they do.
>>
Sunshine is still the best.
>>
If you'd like to expound on your point I'd be happy to read it.
>>
>>381582728
In what way? Be specific.
>>
>>381582728
Playing 64 now, still is the best 3d platformer.

Most GC games are good by today's standards too.

It's time to be honest with yourself. You just want a little attention.
>>
>>381582728
I literally just played through 64 yesterday
The game's graphics and camera aren't great, but the controls are still fantastic and the game as a whole is still great
Kill yourself OP
>>
>>381582728
It's time to be honest with yourself: you like men.
>>
super mario sunshit is globalist global warming chinsese hoax propaganda, SM64 is the superior game and it gets pretty boring
>>
>>381582728
Nah, 64 is still fun, especially compared to other platforms in the same decade.
>>
>>381582728
? just played 64 the other day and it still feels as great to play as always
>>
>>381582970
>>381582991
The controls and camera are pretty rough by modern standards
>>
>>381582728
they have
I played 64 for the first time last year, got all 120 stars and had a lot of fun
replayed sunshine for probably the 10th time earlier this year, also still fun
>>
>>381583334

You're still not saying anything. How are they ''pretty rough''?
>>
>>381582728
Reminder that Galaxy is objectively the best videogame ever made

>b-but muh stories

Wrong medium faggots
>>
>>381582728
The DS version fixed many of the problems I had with 64 and i hope they port it to the Switch.
I love Sunshine and Jr. but ill admit it has bunch of problems maybe the HD version if it ever comes will fix this.
I still think they hold up very well.
>>
>>381583460
Galaxy 2's levels are better but I don't like how it had no hub world
>>
>>381583460
>muh review scores
>>
Yes they have, they're still fantastic games, Sunshine just loses out a bit because of all the Blue Coin stars and a few of the gimmick stars.
>>
>>381583190
>Game is about graffiti
>No mention of climate change at all
>You win the game by collecting shines and making the Island hotter

???
>>
>>381582728
64 just needs textures and to play with the physics of mario walking and moving and shit to newer sticks.
>>
Yes, they have. I'm replaying Sunshine again and it still holds up. The only issue with both games is the camera, aside from that they're completely playable and still excellent titles.
>>
>>381583460
loved galaxy but I do prefer the more open levels. galaxy felt like the fucking greatest mario bros ever but not like the other 3d mario's if that makes sense?

I for sure agree with M64 it's one of those games that gets too much praise especially when people shit on other old games that have the same problems.
>>
>>381583695
What purpose does a hubworld serve in a platformer? Wouldn't you rather just dive right into the levels?
>>
Yeah, not enough epic cutscenes and exploration into the deep moral dilemmas of Mario's character for my liking.

Is that why I replay them multiple times every year?
>>
>>381584227
Extra exploration.
64's castle was fun to explore.
>>
>>381584227
no I'd rather have a hub world with secrets all over like in sunshine
>>
>>381584305
As long as you don't try to beat them faster each time
>>
>>381582857
>Blue coins

No
>>
>>381584361
Isn't that what the levels are for? Yeah I guess those few stars around the castle were cool but that's it.
In the case of Galaxy 1 the hubworld might as well have not even been there.
Yooka Laylee had a horrible convoluted hubworld.
>>
sunshine is still fun but it has its issues, not a fan of fludd desu. i have never played the original sm64 because i had a saturn growing up (yeah i was that kid). played the ds version and i thought it was fun but i didnt like how the abilities were all split up amongst the 4 playable characters.
>>
>>381584815
I thought water sliding and the turbo/rocket nozzles were pretty fun desu
>>
What is a good controller for Project 64 and Dolphin? What is a good controller for PC in general?
>>
Odyssey is still likely going to be the best of the three games.
>>
>>381584992
Galaxy and Galaxy 2 and 3D World don't count?
>>
>>381584815
I wouldn't count that as a strike against 64 since that's a DS-exclusive change. That said, I personally loved having the other characters available. Little me would've gone nuts playing through 64 with Wario or Yoshi as options, and you can just go for another star if you show up to a world as the wrong dude
>>
>>381582728
64 is dated for sure. The castle as a "glorified stage select menu" is stupid. However, the controls are still pretty tight.
>>
>>381585063
Ninty showed a graph that pretty much said the galaxy games are more akin to 3D Land/World as "course clear 3d games" than 64 and Sunshine
>>
>>381585063
Not him but they're not as open-world as 64, Sunshine, and Odyssey from what we've seen. So he classified them differently

Galaxy 1/2 and 3D World are non-linear in some aspects, but whenever you start a level, you have to go for the specified star/goal. In the previous 3, you usually have several options aftee the start of the game to get whatever shines/stars you can.
>>
>>381582728
>aged
Kill yourself
I know you didn't write that but you are saying the same shit
>>
>>381584959
rockcandy are hella cheap. Works ok for the 20 bucks I paid.
>>
Never got into sunshine. You're right about 64. The camera isn't very good and the controls are clunky. Super Mario Galaxy prefected both of these problems (minus that flying star thing in SMG1).
>>
>>381583417
They are rough compared to new games
>>
>>381586230
What do you mean?
I can finish the game without problem, there are even guys that finish them way faster than me with great skill
>>
>>381582728
Super Mario 64 was fine for laying out the groundwork of how a 3D Mario game could POTENTIALLY function. All those controls showing how Mario can jump in different ways and defend himself should players find 3D Jump mechanics spotty were meant to give players choices, exploitation be damned.

However coming out from the 2D Mario games to this, something felt a bit -- weird. Like you see Mario and Goombas and Bowser but something's kind of off. The game feels a bit cryptic and doesn't quite capture that safe mystique of a Mario game. Some parts were just downright traumatic to a player (Mario's deaths, the demon piano, etc.,) who knows Mario as something lighthearted or cartoonish. It's good the game existed, because Nintendo got to throw everything against the wall for this to see what sticks but for the most part it did influence Mario's jumps in 3D.

Sunshine does a fine job of capturing the atmosphere of a modern Mario title. Mario's deaths are simplified but still effective, jump mechanics are somewhat better than 64 but still a little on the spotty side. Areas are sandboxy, but mostly spacious. They had a fair idea of ironing out the atmosphere of a 3D Mario game but still left a lot to be desired. Also the vacation setting was rather limiting. The biggest takeaway from this was environment design, areas can look somewhat practical and still carry a Mario-ish charm which is reflected in Odyssey. It also introduced the idea of giving Mario a central gimmick in 3D collection type games much in the vein of introducing new power-ups in 2D Mario.

Not going to deny there were flaws like Blue Coins and railroading the ending. Also playing with FLUDD wears out rather easily. Don't much care for how Mario can't last 8 seconds underwater, Galaxy fixed that shit.
>>
SM64 is god tier, but only if you know how to play it.

Go watch siglemics speedrun and *attempt* to play like he does.
>>
>>381586230
so you are saying you cannot adapt. Also dunno wtf you're even talking about in regards to Sunshine. That game still handles as easy as the day I bought it 14 years ago.
>>
tell that to pannenkoek
>>
>>381583334
64 has some of the best 3d controls ever made though.
>>
>>381582857
If you're not a completionist, maybe.

Even a lot of its mandatory levels aren't fun or don't have anything to do with platforming.
>>
>>381582728
Dont be retarded OP. Nothing touches SM64 as far as 3D movement goes. You can still do anything in that game. Its near-flawless.
>>
>>381585415

Not always, and that's not the problem, the problem is that in some levels you have a main planet that connects to the rest and its linear from there, you can't go back in most of them.
>>
>>381586468

Are you forgetting SMB3? It also had a strange, sometimes dark feeling, particularly in world 8.
>>
>>381583172
I'd argue that the camera is great if you know how to operate it correctly. If you are aware of the restrictions then you can use it and place it wherever you want on a dime.

The problem is, so many people use an analog stick for the camera and its imprecise. Use the C-buttons (like Hori 64 pad) and its perfect.
>>
>>381587385
That's not a problem though.
>>
>>381587415
Just world 8, really. Though Pipe Land had a very seedy feel to it, like a detective novel.
>>
>>381588052
> Though Pipe Land had a very seedy feel to it, like a detective novel.
wat
>>
Mentor is evil and you turn into a Door
>>
64 definitely has because you have so much choice over how you play the game. Sunshine is more linear and harder to come back to. Honestly 64 holds up better than the Galaxy games for the same reason.
>>
>>381589230
That doesn't even make sense, that's like saying Legend of Zelda for the NES has held up better than any other Zelda game because you have more choice in it than others.
>>
>>381582728
This. I own Sunshine and the camera is horrendous.
>>
>>381589617

NES Zelda has held up very well for exactly that reason. Linearity is great in linear games, but it's anathema to games with big open worlds explore.
>>
>>381589617
Legend of Zelda 1 and 2 are better than breath of the shit
>>
sunshine sucked

mario 64 is boring and small now
