No. In 5 they get a line of elemental sword skills alongside the regular ones, (And Disgaea 5 has assigned elemental resistances based on class, so it's never a guessing game anymore) and the sub-weapon system means they can easily swap to a staff to snipe something for 1 turn.
In Disgaea Dimension 2 they introduced the Book weapon that let the Magic Knight use both Attack and Intelligence at the same time.
After 1, they also have much better stats to compensate for their awkward role, to the point that they can cast reasonably well even with a non-staff weapon.

If Switch/DLC, giving her Girl Laharl's Hasty Rush is great, outright giving her Twin Heads is a good plan, and if Switch, Tyrant Prinnio's evility can be useful, since I'm pretty sure if you clear the stage before she stops attacking, she won't die.
Unstable Power is a great pick, since your Sage is hurting for slots, and the 20% stat drop per turn shouldn't matter, since if it didn't die in one turn, it's probably not dying to Land Decimator anyways.
Bullying is fantastic, Mana Scarcity is good.

If you haven't been doing it yet, giving her Purgatory and making Crit Curry is incredible for everyone.

I just bought and started playing the first Disgaea on PC. What are some of the must have classes and strategies I should look out for?

If you plan to use Etna, give her an axe, you haven't gotten her yet, but when you get the cute blonde angel, teach her offensive magic asap.
Mages/Skulls are really good. Be sure to level up a Wind Mage, a Fire Mage and an Ice Mage (or Skull) to Lv. 5 to unlock the Star Mage class. Star magic does typeless damage that isn't affected by elemental resistances, so it's a must of you only wanna run 1 mage.

Mind you, this probably makes them HARDER to kill, but you can do it.

Overall, Disgaea generally has good dubbing. The more recent games have somewhat suspect generic voices, but the main characters are largely at least decent.
D1: Laharl's great, Etna's good (Some people prefer the old Amanda Lee voice, but Michelle Ruff is okay), Flonne can grate, but that is the case for both english and jap. Gordon is great, Lamington is good, Hoggmeiser is funnier.
D2: Axel is okay, Rozy is okay, Tink is good, Yukimaru is a bit cuter. Probably the weakest dub.
D3: Mao's good, Raspberyl is amazing, Champloo is amazing, Sapphire is good, the Vato Bros are amazing.
D4: Valvatorez is fan-fucking tastic, Fenrich is great, Fuka is good, Desco grates in either language, Hugo is good, and Dr. Kazamatsuri is great.
DD2 Garungun is amazing, the other Krichevskoy group members are okay. Another weak cast.
D5: Red Magnus, Usalia, and Christo are all great. Killia isn't good, Sera is hit-and-miss. Bloodis is pure sex.

Soul Nomad legitimately has one of the best game dubs of all time.
Phantom Brave is only okay.
Makai Kingdom is fantastic in general.
Z.H.P is also very well dubbed.

Adell and Rozalin aren't forgettable. The rest of the cast pretty much is though.

I didn't like how none of the characters besides Emizel develop at all in 4. I was open to Fuka at first, but started to really dislike her toward the end, especially in the Fuka & Desco show. Everyone else had some really obvious shortcomings and basically refused to admit it or change at all.
