It's repetitive as fuck and the story is poorly written. You'll either pick a class option that trivializes encounters or one that's fucking useless garbage. Your pawns will always be shit. Quests are tedious nonsense. Exploration is rarely rewarded, often punished. If your numbers aren't big enough, you will not win an encounter. Period.

No memes, /v/ really loves this game (as well as a shitload of other people) but I just can't get into it at all. I'm being overly harsh on purpose here, but I still believe that the game doesn't deserve the praise it gets. It's just not that good as a whole.

Story is kinda shit I'll agree, but half the investment comes from waifu'ing the nice selection of ladies/men and building a head cannon for you and your custom pawn.
Pawns were always acceptable for me and the game always felt perfectly balanced for my magic archer. The gameplay is where I remember everything coming together to perfection. It's top tier in terms of class variation and just feeling like a badass.

i personally found assassin and now magic knight the best, simply because of the stam growth from mixed yellow/red vocation.

plus assassin can wear light to med armours, take a sword and bow, so the idiom of the wandering hero fits. fighter can kinda fit and the mage classes do too, but 'warrior' just seems silly, carrying a huge weapon and stomping all over the countryside in full heavy armour....

If I remember right, the only online* trophy is having to recruit a certain number of pawns. The reason I'm using that * is because you don't actually need other players to get it, just an online connection. Devs thought ahead and have pre-made and randomly generated pawns to populate the game in case the player base ever dried up. Pretty neat imo.

Starting as Fighter is good, then once you're lvl10 move on to strider or some of the other better classes (Assassin is fun as fuck and easily the strongest one in the game but can trivialize the encounters pretty fast if you level it up too much).
You can change class whenever you want so just try to experiment and see which playstyle fits you better. Every class has a different stat progression but it doesn't really matter unless you're min-maxing.

Pawn Sorceror/Mage is usually the standard choice everyone picks. I'd suggest Mage if you wanna tackle the game only with you and your pawn and not hire any other pawn. Sorceror has a vastly superior stat growth though, so if you're hiring player's pawns there's no reason not to have your own be a Sorc instead of Mage.

For the inclinations first>second>hidden third. Utilitarian is only really good if you have two sorceror in group with it (they sync together).

Just bought the game in the sunmer sale and for some reason I can't play it in full screen ... all day i have been tinkering with the options but still only black screens with sound working when I start it...

combat is boring especially when you get passed level 20 because then enemies aren't as much of a threat but you're still not strong enough to take them out with one of two hits so it becomes a really bland hack n slash game and you can only travel by foot across a huge map and the annoying enemies you literally just killed keep responding in the exact same spot so you can't walk amywhere without having to fight them for upteenth time.

I'm level 17 but getting btfo by the bandits on the way to the witchwood, the armored ones take no damage from my daggers at all. I just want to do a quest to kill some cyclops that I got from the encampment notice board but can't even get to the area it says the enemies are in.

literally the only thing people mention when talking about how "good" the combat in this game is. never mind the fact that the majority of the time you're killing goblins or wolves or the fact that climbing a giant and then hitting x a thousand times until your stamina drains and you have to wait until it replenishes so you can do it all over again isn't fucking fun after 2 or 3 times.

my advice is just buy monster hunter or sotc if that's what you're into. this game was worth a few days of play and then it gets really boring. pirate it if anything but don't waste your money

Those bandits particularly are really tough in the beginning because of how damage calculations in this game works. Worst case, you can sneak past them. But remember, Wolves hunt in packs

Go for variety. I always kept a healslut pawn so I don't have to worry about healing. My pawn was Strider (Torpor dealer by endgame) and I was Assassin.
The second pawn was typically a Fighter for grapples.

There's a really uncalled for point of no return for a sidequest in the beginning of the game, if you fail it, you get locked out of couple of more sidequests, two waifus and some lore.
When Quina really needs your help, go help her. The exact moment of no-return is entering Gran Soren

Yeah, this is probably the biggest bullshit about dragon's dogma. Because it's not really that clear at that point that you can lose this optional side quest and some others, and when you actually decide to do it it's quite challenging giving the impression that you're not doing it at the right time due to being underleveled / not skilled enough. Yeah, but you wont be able to hire new ones or update those you hired (they don't gain levels with you, only with original owner).

And you can re hire your bros pawn as he levels it up, because they dont level when hired
