I can pop a PS2 disc in my 60gb PS3 and play it. Of course, I'd just put it in my PS2 to play it instead.

You could if you had an early fat model without updates, then Sony went full jew.

On the offchance you're actually curious and not trolling: Different disc types. The original run of the PS3 actually had a hybrid reader inside of it, one of the large reasons why it was both backwards compatible and so fucking expensive.
