I mean I have a job, and I still play. I like summoning folks, and I like being summoned. It's almost like I like the game.

I only ever see summon signs at boss gates now
I guess phantoms got tired of spending ten minutes escorting a host to a boss only for the host to die in a matter of seconds when they can just take a safer bet and get summoned right at the boss without worrying about wasting too much time

Getting summoned at the beginning or in the middle of a stage is only beneficial if you're new to the game. you can make some nice extra souls to boost your stats some and get to learn the area without risking anything. now people only put down summon signs for quick boss souls.
