Nowadays, betas aren't really shown. So the whole "what if" aspect of released games isn't quite as apparent anymore.
Can we have a thread for beta builds of games? Posting the most popular, of course.

Trampling Stu is a fucking terrifying enemy.

Max Payne had a very long development cycle so it went through a lot of iterations. Originally it had a much less grounded feel which was more like Kingpin.

HL2 Beta was pretty neat, back in like 2005 I was on a team that fixed up some pretty neat stuff in the code that wasn't working in the leak itself.
It's interesting to see just how much shit got cut from that game

Or wasn't properly implemented in the first place.

betas aren't shown because you now can pay to betatest and alphatest.
Alpha showed us how much it was rushed because of deadlines. To be honest it was their own fault, still good game.

Oh shit you were on the team? How was it?

Tbqh Stalker had already been a punchline nearing Duke Nukem Forever by 2007. GSC clearly needed focus to actually finish making a game.

Did he shoot Vinnie in this version?
>>381468232
He was originally supposed to shoot him but later on it was changed to sparing him, probably for a sequel bait. There's even a piece of the graphic novel with Max angrily unloading his gun which isn't in the original game floating around the internet but I can't find it now.

It was mostly a mishmash of half working stuff and few working portions, only runs in windows xp sp2 compatibility mode now though

Stalker has been in development for 7 years at the point of the initial release. Clear sky and CoP showed us that they'd continue working on it for at least 2 more years.
