I can do 4 chains at most with Chainblocking and I leave a ton of Puyos on the field.

Meanwhile I can do T-spins Triples, Perfect Clears and 4 Wide's at Tetris. It almost feels useless to get good at Puyo at this point, but I want to play the story.

I'm always nervous about making setups because of garbage showing up and interrupting my stuff.
Because I'm always just clearing my puyos quickly to stay alive until the Tetris segments return, my Puyo screen is usually very empty at all times.

Keep in mind that you need to clear up most of the block you have above the Tetris garbage so you can clean it up. Also, 1-block garbage is fine because you would need one Tetromino per line to clean them, and that would "screw" your construction.

PD: There's a reason why Puyo cand send more garbage to Tetris rather than otherwise: Placing up Tetrominos is more easy than making Puyo chains.

That's what separates the good players from the really good players. The best players will memorize the next few puyos they're given so they can take a peek at what their opponents are doing while muscle memory takes over, or they get good at flashing their eyes at their opponents board whenever they can to understand what they're doing. As a fighting game fan I wouldn't say Puyo is anything like a fighting game though, it's closer to an RTS.
