How am I supposed to play their shitty tanks?

I never got the obsesion for tanks that some people have on this site.
I just don't find the appealing, and I like to read about war and millitary story too, but I just don't find the infatuation towards those machines.

Tanks are rad as all Hell. Literally vehicles with a giant single cannon. And WWII tanks are cool because they're all unique and look like they were balanced for a video game.

Modern MBTs are boring.

Also because they were historically meant to pierce the enemy armor and shred a soldier inside or two. Would you continue to sit in a tank when you look over at your buddy and now his torso is gone? You'd get the Hell out.

Unfortunately, this doesn't make for a good WT experience since your crew has no personal feelings or emotions.

Unfortunately with the current state of the game anything without HE filler rounds is pure suffering. If you can tolerate the Brit tanks they get better around 6.0 when they get Sabot rounds which make up for the terrible AP rounds, they still aren't as good as HE filled rounds but they are a decent middle step.

Avoid Firefly and Achilles if possible.

Tanks are cars except except with giant gun on top.

Cold war and mostly WWII era vehicles are so popular because that was when there was an extreme amount of variation in tank design since no one had any idea for the ideal tank that would become the MBT.

World of Tanks -> Balanced (san PTW) BUT HORRIBLE RNG and mechancis
War Thunder -> RUSSIAN BIAS but better (If slow and groggy) mechanics

Well if you are going early war the reason stated is that High Explosive rounds fired from tanks encroaches on the job of the artillery units since they fire things that go boom and we can't have that.

I don't care if it's a sim or an arcade so long as I get to be cooped up in a tank with some bros. Some of the best times I've had was playing in an MBT in Project Reality with a bro. Shame you can't get that kind of co-op multiplayer without it being subservient to a bigger mode (combined arms). It'd be great to relive my days as a Bradley crewman but in vidya form as opposed to the individually played tanks you see most of the time.

Think of this, the most defended airspace in the world is North Korea. In order to fight a modern war there you would need to use ground forces to make any sort of invasion. You would need tanks to support that ground force.

Tanks aren't obsolete, especially when you have no guarantees of air superiority. That's why Russia has a shit ton of tanks and a shit ton of AA

It doesn't matter what the tech level

SEAD is Suppresion, not destruction, because that's all air attacks can do is suppress. THe issue in 1991 was the American's didn't realise how many SAM sites there were in bagdad and how much suppression they had actually done. They only ended up losing 2 F-16s and no pilots (A testament to the USAF's training and ability), but Command never did another strike by non-stealth aircraft. That's how big of a deal those 2 lost aircraft was, not the number but the fact that the enemy wasn't as suppressed as they thought. It's also a big fucking deal though, because it shows the power of Stealth.

To kill your enemy you have to see them, and the issue with NK is we can't see enough. Sure we can suppress the air defense to some degree but ground forces and tanks will still play a huge role because, You won't be able to eliminate the air defense completely with SEAD. I am not doubting the power of Air, but you shouldn't overestimate it either.

All 3 of the Cromwells are the deadliest tanks in their BR range if played properly.
Key things:
1. Go fast. You've got one of the quickest tanks in the game, fucking use that quality
2. Flank, avoid facing the enemy head on. Your armor is paper.
3. Aim for the crew. Shoot into the side of the turret and you'll most likely take out the gunner. Knocking out the gunner on a Pz.IV can be done from the front, just shoot the plate to your right of its cannon.
4. Remember, you can eat T-34s for breakfast. Motherfuckers are so cramped that you don't need any explosive filler.
5. KV-1s are scary. NEVER face them head on.

Below the Cromwell ranks, all this basically applies to A13s and Crusaders too. The one caveat here is that the Crusader Mk. III's speed is a lot less impressive so it's kinda mediocre to the point that I prefer the Mk.II and A13.
As for other Bong tanks at low ranks such as the Valentine and Matilda, I say fuck those things. Because they're so sluggish it's too hard to get the flank shots and such that you need with the solid shot ammo.

A/C these days carry targeting pods which can maintain visual from 20~ nm slant range, which means you can directly bomb SAM sites from outside their effective range.

bombs have longer ranges than the NK SAMs.

suppress and then release bombs from 30~ nm slant and you will kill them.

Also, top tip for fighting Pz IVs and most other German tanks.

" “They have a mix of old Soviet SAMs [surface-to-air missiles], including the S-75, S-125, S-200 and Kvadrat, which are likely in more or less good condition,” Vasily Kashin, a senior fellow at the Center for Comprehensive European and International Studies at Moscow’s Higher School of Economics told The National Interest. “They used to produce the S-75 themselves—and those could have received some significant upgrades. In addition to them, since early the 2010s they are fielding an indigenous modern SAM system which is called KN-06 by South Korea and the U.S.”

It is not clear how many KN-06 SAM batteries Pyongyang has built, but the North Korean weapon is a surprisingly capable system that is similar to early model versions of the Russian-built S-300. “No one knows exactly how many such systems exist,” Kashin said. “The KN-06 has phased array radar and tracks via missile guidance system and maybe equivalent to the early S-300P versions but with greater range." "

North Korean leadership isn't retarded anon. They know the only thing standing between them and thorough butt fucking is to stay on top of their SAM game.

The sabot round for it at the time was made of hardened steel and had performance characteristics similar to the DM-23 the Germans made for their 120mm gun in 1984, roughly 15 years after what was proposed for the MBT-70s 152mm round.

The 20mm was hated because of how obtuse the controls were for it. But the real neat part was the hydraulics and the engine.
>>
>>381455306
Something about early attempts resulted in the fuses going off prematurely, and it was a hassle, and in real life an an ap shell going through the tank at the right places is good enough to disable it.

Honestly if you were in those tanks and you got hit by a shell and even one of your crew members got shredded to bits everyone would bail immediately. There are WWII clap tankers that went through over half a dozen tanks throughout the war.

USAF doesn't like A-10 due to obsolescence on modern battlefield and so doesn't want to spend the money.

also they probably can't. 30 years is a fucking eternity in aerospace, 90% of the molds probably no longer exist and half the contractors are out of business, similar problem to F-22 likely.
>>
>>381472401
It's infinitely cheaper to cannibalize older airframes and repair them than to find all the blue prints of a defunct company, make the tooling, training and then finally produce the replacement parts.

You should've seen the proposed cost of simply buying NEW barrels for the Iowa class' 16" cannons back in the 80s, and those were essentially just long metal tubes.
>>
>>381472585
Hellcats are pretty glorious

The problem is that they're quite a jump in BR, I made the mistake of unlocking it without anything at a similar rank which meant that using the Hellcat had the consequence that every other tank available was horribly underranked.
>>
>>381472685
The difference is that Lockheed made a big deal about keeping all the tooling and training materials for the F-22's production and keeping them in a climate controlled facility. They're supremely confident that F-22 production will start up again in the future, particularly once Congress allows it for export to Japan once they start to see that the Japs are making headway with their own 5th gen fighter program.

It actually wasn't that bad. It got a bad reputation from the Sheridan, whose light weight made any launch rock the vehicle to the point where it took until the missile was practically 200m away before it could regain track. The M60A2 was down to 75m and the MBT-70 had the sighting system in a much better location so it would begin tracking at ~25m after launch. But in general, GLTATGMs are garbage

>Why don't British AP shells have explosive filler?

Because in reality it wasn't really necessary. If a tank was penetrated in almost all cases the crew would bail out even if it didn't kill anyone or particularly damage the interior - getting hit and penetrated meant that the enemy had your number, and since the typical procedure was to shoot a tank until it caught fire to confirm the kill, getting hit once meant that more shells would be on the way very shortly and you might not be so lucky next time.

Obviously in War Thunder the crews are all super badasses with no sense of self-preservation, so that doesn't really work.

>The french won the 100 year war
- Gallic Wars
- Lost. In a war whose ending foreshadows the next 2000 years of French history, France is conquered by of all things, an Italian. [Or at ths time in history, a Roman -ed.]

- Hundred Years War
- Mostly lost, saved at last by female schizophrenic who inadvertently creates The First Rule of French Warfare; "France's armies are victorious only when not led by a Frenchman." Sainted.

- Italian Wars
- Lost. France becomes the first and only country to ever lose two wars when fighting Italians.

- Wars of Religion
- France goes 0-5-4 against the Huguenots

- Thirty Years War
- France is technically not a participant, but manages to get invaded anyway. Claims a tie on the basis that eventually the other participants started ignoring her.

- War of Revolution
- Tied. Frenchmen take to wearing red flowerpots as chapeaux.

- The Dutch War
- Tied

- War of the Augsburg League/King William's War/French and Indian War
- Lost, but claimed as a tie. Three ties in a row induces deluded Frogophiles the world over to label the period as the height of French military power.

- War of the Spanish Succession
- Lost. The War also gave the French their first taste of a Marlborough, which they have loved every since.

- American Revolution
- In a move that will become quite familiar to future Americans, France claims a win even though the English colonists saw far more action. This is later known as "de Gaulle Syndrome", and leads to the Second Rule of French Warfare; "France only wins when America does most of the fighting."

- French Revolution
- Won, primarily due the fact that the opponent was also French.

- The Napoleonic Wars
- Lost. Temporary victories (remember the First Rule!) due to leadership of a Corsican, who ended up being no match for a British footwear designer.

- The Franco-Prussian War
- Lost. Germany first plays the role of drunk Frat boy to France's ugly girl home alone on a Saturday night.

- World War I
- Tied and on the way to losing, France is saved by the United States [Entering the war late -ed.]. Thousands of French women find out what it's like to not only sleep with a winner, but one who doesn't call her "Fraulein." Sadly, widespread use of condoms by American forces forestalls any improvement in the French bloodline.

- World War II
- Lost. Conquered French liberated by the United States and Britain just as they finish learning the Horst Wessel Song.

- War in Indochina
- Lost. French forces plead sickness; take to bed with the Dien Bien Flu

- Algerian Rebellion
- Lost. Loss marks the first defeat of a western army by a Non-Turkic Muslim force since the Crusades, and produces the First Rule of Muslim Warfare; "We can always beat the French." This rule is identical to the First Rules of the Italians, Russians, Germans, English, Dutch, Spanish, Vietnamese and Esquimaux.

- War on Terrorism
- France, keeping in mind its recent history, surrenders to Germans and Muslims just to be safe. Attempts to surrender to Vietnamese ambassador fail after he takes refuge in a McDonald's.

The question for any country silly enough to count on the French should not be "Can we count on the French?", but rather "How long until France collapses?"

"Going to war without France is like going deer hunting without an accordion. All you do is leave behind a lot of noisy baggage."

Or, better still, the quote from last week's Wall Street Journal: "They're there when they need you."
With only an hour and a half of research, Jonathan Duczkowski provided the following losses:

Norse invasions, 841-911.
After having their way with the French for 70 years, the Norse are bribed by a French King named Charles the Simple (really!) who gave them Normandy in return for peace. Normans proceed to become just about the only positive military bonus in France's [favour] for next 500 years.

Mexico, 1863-1864
France attempts to take advantage of Mexico's weakness following its thorough thrashing by the U.S. 20 years earlier ("Halls of Montezuma"). Not surprisingly, the only unit to distinguish itself is the French Foreign Legion (consisting of, by definition, non-Frenchmen). Booted out of the country a little over a year after arrival.

Panama jungles 1881-1890.
No one but nature to fight, France still loses; canal is eventually built by the U.S. 1904-1914.

Napoleonic Wars.
Should be noted that the Grand Armee was largely (~%50) composed of non-Frenchmen after 1804 or so. Mainly disgruntled minorities and anti-monarchists. Not surprisingly, these performed better than the French on many occasions.

Haiti, 1791-1804.
French defeated by rebellion after sacrificing 4,000 Poles to yellow fever. Shows another rule of French warfare; when in doubt, send an ally.

India, 1673-1813.
British were far more charming then French, ended up victors. Therefore the British are well known for their tea, and the French for their whine (er, wine...). Ensures 200 years of bad teeth in England.

Barbary Wars, middle ages-1830.
Pirates in North Africa continually harass European shipping in Meditteranean. France's solution: pay them to leave us alone. America's solution: kick their asses ("the Shores of Tripoli"). [America's] first overseas victories, won 1801-1815.

1798-1801, Quasi-War with U.S.
French privateers (semi-legal pirates) attack U.S. shipping. U.S. fights France at sea for 3 years; French eventually cave; sets precedent for next 200 years of Franco-American relations.

Moors in Spain, late 700s-early 800s.
Even with Charlemagne leading them against an enemy living in a hostile land, French are unable to make much progress. Hide behind Pyrennes until the modern day.

bullshit. It may not be as high tolerance as an air superiority fighter, but any combat aircraft is still subject to an incredible amount of stress, and they have much more demanded of them than civilian aircraft.

A 30 year old single engine Cessna is not too bad as long as it was maintained well. A 30 year old A-10 is a potential deathtrap, no matter how many overhauls its had.

These things are CAS attack aircraft. They're not B-52s dropping bombs at 40,000 feet or C-5s leisurely cruising along. They regularly make high G dives and rolls, and small arms fire is routine for them. 30 years is an eternity.

French-on-French losses (probably should be counted as victories too, just to be fair):

1208: Albigenses Crusade, French massacared by French.
When asked how to differentiate a heretic from the faithful, response was "Kill them all. God will know His own." Lesson: French are badasses when fighting unarmed men, women and children.

St. Bartholomew Day Massacre, August 24, 1572.
Once again, French-on-French slaughter.

Third Crusade.
Philip Augustus of France throws hissy-fit, leaves Crusade for Richard the Lion Heart to finish.

Seventh Crusade
St. Louis of France leads Crusade to Egypt. Completely crushed.

[Eighth] Crusade.
St. Louis back in action, this time in Tunis. See Seventh Crusade.

Also should be noted that France attempted to hide behind the Maginot line, sticking their head in the sand and pretending that the Germans would enter France that way. By doing so, the Germans would have been breaking with their traditional route of invading France, entering through Belgium (Napoleonic Wars, Franco-Prussian War, World War I, etc.). French ignored this though, and put all their effort into these defenses.

Thomas Whiteley has submitted this addition to me:

Seven year War 1756-1763
Lost: after getting hammered by Frederick the Great of Prussia (yep, the Germans again) at Rossbach, the French were held off for the remainder of the War by Frederick of Brunswick and a hodge-podge army including some Brits. War also saw France kicked out of Canada (Wolfe at Quebec) and India (Clive at Plassey).

Richard Mann, an American in France wants to add the following:

The French consider the departure of the French from Algeria in 1962-63, after 130 years on colonialism, as a French victory and especially consider C. de Gaulle as a hero for 'leading' said victory over the unwilling French public who were very much against the departure. This ended their colonialism. About 2 million ungrateful Algerians lost their lives in this shoddy affair.

Wargame

You've got 3 games in the series; European Escalation (best Single Player, dead multiplayer), Airland Battle (Worst single player, ok multiplayer) and Red Dragon (ok single player, great multiplayer and still alive)

In the game, you've got 3 Bradley IFV's armed with TOW's, I-TOW's and TOW-2's

Then you've got 3 Recon Bradley's with the same above loadout but can't carry troops. They also have stealth somehow

>>
>>381460358
Don't forget that pretty much all MBT armament can penetrate any MBT because armor stacking means literally nothing anymore, unlike in WW2 before HEAT and HESH starting making their mark. Also fucking ATGMs...

Takes out all the strategy in angling your tank and having good positioning. Now it's whoever has a faster, more agile tank with a better, more accurate gun. That's not necessarily bad, but it makes for less interesting battles/games (see: Armored Warfare).
>>
>>381461548
The Conflict series were fun as fuck and had a few missions that gave you a Bradley in Desert Storm I & II. Global Terror might've done as well but I'm not sure.
Granted it's not the focus of the game or even the missions it's in but it's still fun. Doubly so if you can co-op it.
>>
>>381458532
It's not difficult knowing that the gunner typically sits on the right side of the cannon breech of the tank (when looking down the barrel). The only faction with gunners on the left side of the cannon breech is USA, with very few exceptions (like the British Black Prince). Makes it very easy knowing where to shoot the most common tanks you'll come across.

Shoot the gunner and the tank is practically out of commission until he's replaced.

Trying to take down a Matilda with a Panzer III is pure suffering. A medium anti-armour vehicle, can it can't penetrate armour.

>>
>>381492382
Panzer III tanks' strengths lie in their mobility, not their armor. Stop getting shot at and flank more with your agility. The Pz.III M has a shitty 50mm gun but even a 50mm cannon can shred through side armor and into the engine block to cause fires.
>>
>>381494372
That depends, do you like having a shitty gun vs. armor made of Stalinium or do you like getting spotted while behind 50 bushes and under the water then getting ammo racked despite having a wet rack module and instantly dying?
