What is the best way to learn Japanese?
>>
What europeans consider "complicated grammar" is just complicated morphology and well developed case systems.

Languages fall on a spectrum, where languages that are highly morphologically complicated are called "synthetic" and languages that arent are called "analytic".

English and chinese falls on the analytic side, german falls somewhere in the middle (middle-analytic mabye), latin somewhere in the middle, PIE was middle-synthetic mabye, and languages like finnish and aztec are highly synthetic.

People who speak english tend to think that languages on the syntheitc side are more "complicated" than languages on the analytuical side, mostly because of "muh cases", "muh tenses", "muh aggulation", but most englishmen also completely overlook the complicated parts of analytical languages, most importantly the syntax.

In a language like finnish you can string together three words, and as long as you inflict them correctly, the sentence will make sense.

In english, if you wanted to do the same, you'd usually need to use thrice the ammount of words, and you'd need to pay an extreme amount of attention to getting things all in the right order. Amerifats overlook this for some reason i only half-way understand.

Consider this:

After watching the MHW trailer and hearing the english voice actress, I was immediate put off by it, thinking it was shit. But then it occurred to me, I wouldn't know if an english voice actress wasn't shit (as opposed to japanese), because I can't actually understand japanese

So I may be wrong, but the language barrier may force me to fill in the gap with a positive ideal, and the learning the language would kill the magic

Ok let me explain to people unfamiliar with Kanji why it's so great.

When learning new words and you already know the kanji within it you can usually immediately guess or reason what the word is going to be about.

This gives Japanese and Chinese science and mathematics learning children a HUGE advantage over western children.

For example Electron=電子 電=electricity 子=child

When first reading about electrons you'll immediately know it has something to do with electricity and with being small/particle.

There are thousands of really smart ways this is done in both mathematics and physics all over Japanese and Chinese.

I am 100% sure THIS is the reason Why Kanji using nations are at the top of mathematics and physics globally. It's not because they are genetically smarter or better at it. It's because kanji makes it far easier for children and students to learn and understand concepts like this within one glance.

The reality is that they will work for nothing, which is exactly what localisation companies want to pay, because they're all about that profit line.

There are plenty of good game dubs. One thing you'll notice immediately is that every single one of them is a native dub, though. Localisation budgets are effectively zero, which is why you get awful acting and translations done by interns.

Get basic grammar down and then just start reading things. Anki is useful in helping to reinforce and help you remember words since you're not constantly immersed in the language. If you're just looking at grammar guides and grinding vocab you'll burn out before learning anything.

Heisig is weird. I hated it when I first tried it, I loved it and completed it on my second attempt.

It's a lot of work on the outset, but once you start burning through characters, it really compounds how well you can read and retain new words.

I honestly credit Heisig with my ability to read Japanese novels today.

You don't learn the readings that's reatarded.
A word can have up to to 20 maybe more and chances are they're not used.
Heisig is to help you recognise the kanji so even if you can't say it you know what it means.
Also it helps familiarise you to kanji that's not in the book and trains you tio get used to it.
I was stuck writing the same kanji hundreds of times and learning the readings and got nowhere.

Don't do it I wasted so much time and paper.

You learn words as you read. And with it different readings. I don't even know readings for words but fron the kanji I know what's being said.

Sure people will tell you to just use anki, i did too but after heisig kanji doesn't scare me.

actually it's incredibly easy because it's a phonetic language. the contradiction you are talking about is from writing conventions. things like "there/their/they're" and such. These are learned through rote memorization. But the actual language is neat because one you learn the sounds of the alphabet, you can sound out most words, which makes a powerful correlation in the brain between the string of characters and a word you probably already use in speech. Do this enough and depending on aptitude you will be reading fluently in a matter of months as opposed to years of study, rote memorizing thousands of characters.

English has some issues but phonetic languages are vastly superior. There's a reason it's the universal language of business.
>>
>>381453897
I speak 5 languages and of those English is only number 4 (Dutch is worse) in being as concise as possible. German,Spanish and Japanese are all 3 more concise in explanations than English. >>
>>381454284
>english is a phonetic language with simple correspondence between the written characters and their sounds
English has one of the largest phoneme banks and has some of the least distinguishability between how letters correspond to a phoneme in a given situation. You can often get sometimes close, but the majority of the sounds as used properly are only learned through experience.

Take 'stop' for example. That 't' in native English is actually a 'd,' and chances are as a native English speaker you have no clue that you're actually saying 'sdop' beyond having been trained to.

>>381454051
Grammar is a little more complex than Japanese.

The vocabulary is more fucked up to pronounce and there are a LOT more words in usage with more context to them so that's harder to learn.

The script is easy to learn and no Kanji. But Kanji isn't as hard as anyone here says. It's just dedication and takes some time but it's easily the easiest part of learning Japanese. So I think that in the long term it would be easier to pick up Japanese compared to Korean. Either way if you already speak one of them it's really easy to learn another one because they are from the same lingual family. Also keep in mind that most Koreans already speak English so the reason to learn Korean is really small with almost no benefits or job opportunities gained from mastering it compared to a Chinese dialect or Japanese.

Americans substituting the soft "d" for a hard "t" has literally nothing to do with the written language though. it's just a speaking convention. to a burger using the hard "t" would sound British.

The argument was that English is a phonetic language, one that is easily sounded out and corresponds well to its writing system. While your sentence made sense in context, were you speaking to an actual Japanese person, they may have thought you were being rude.

Japanese isn't hard. As with anything you're trying to learn, it just takes patience. Here's some books I use everyday, they're pretty cheap on Amazon or Kinokuniya if you live in NYC:

Particle handbook:

https://www.amazon.com/All-About-Particles-Handbook-Japanese/dp/1568364199/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1498153915&sr=8-1&keywords=japanese+particle+handbook

Grammer textbook:

https://www.amazon.com/Guide-Japanese-Grammar-approach-learning/dp/1495238962/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1498153940&sr=8-1&keywords=tae+kim%27s+guide+to+japanese

Everyday phrases and nouns:

https://www.amazon.com/Nihongo-Noryokushiken-Taisaku-matome-Vocabulary/dp/4872177312/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1498154015&sr=8-1&keywords=nihongo+sou+matome

Do what I did: buy an android app called Dr. Moku. I learned all hiragana and katakana in 7 days, it is very easy. After that it is just recognizing them and reading them more quickly, so keep practicing. The pokemon games are all without Kanji because the pokemon games help kids learn Hiragana/katakana, so you can play those games on emulator if you want to practice more.

Japanese language threads on /v/ suck balls.

It's always the same old shit every fucking time. I don't even need to read this to know there is the one guy or the few guys who show up to say ">learning a language for X haha lmao" or the guy talking about how kanji is shit and how the language needs to forsake it. Or the few guys asking how to start. Then there are the people shitposting about English as a first or second language, people shitposting about anki, people engaging in self pity and complaining they suck because they gave up/couldn't even muster the will to start. So on.

It's always the same. I just finished my daily reps and now I'm off to read my novel. Good luck being stuck in the same endless cycle instead of using your time to actually learn/practice.

It's literally considered one of the easiest languages to learn because of the huge cultural exposure to it, it's also pretty forgivable and flexible. The hard part of english is its phonetic part, because it's full of retarded rules and arbitrary pronunciations, like how "live" can be pronounced differently to make 2 different words, with no special character indicating it

Everyone complaining about Kanji difficulty is a whiny lazy faggot.

It's not even difficult it's just time consuming. Just because YOU can't muster up 30 minutes a day to practice kanji doesn't mean it's "oh soooo haaaaard".

Are you guys literal fucking niggers or something?

If you are able to learn hiragana and katakana (~100 symbols) within 3 days then you are able to learn the ~2000 kanji in 30-60 days. Lets say you learn 5 kanji a day then you still only need 400 days is just over 1 year to learn most kanji.

Don't be a fucking whiny faggot and just do your daily fucking learning and practice.
>>
Every time I see a Japanese thread on /v/ (and in the past on /a/) it's just a bunch of whining. If you want to learn the language, just start learning the language. It's free and takes very little time.
Instead of getting frustrated and going to 4chan to complain, just keep reading. Every time I got discourage and felt like I was wasting my time I reminded myself that the only way I could improve was to sit down and read.

I've noticed throughout my life that the only thing you need to do to be successful is not be lazy and just do the things you want to do and commit to them. That's all. No high-IQ or special lucky sauce needed. Just don't be a fucking lazy asshole and slowly work towards your goals day by day.

This is in my opinion the reason japs are so obsessed with social appearances and hierarchical positions. (And probably why they're a bit fucked up in the head and perverted as hell) From birth all the way to old age they have to split their way of talking into "addressed towards people inferior to me" and "addressed towards people equal or superior to me". They have to make this "superior or inferior" distinction in nearly every aspect of their life.

Perhaps if they learned other languages it'd help a bit, but they also have one of the lowest rates of proficiency in english. It comes as no surprise to a nation as xenophobic as that, but still.

Glad I'm a foreigner though and don't really have to watch my language, I can just speak rudely and they'll think it's gaijins doing gaijins things. しょう が ない

I genuinely can't tell if you're all fucking around or if you don't know how to spell "impossible" in Japanese. It's インポッシブル.

ん/ン don't always make an "n" sound – the letter basically represents a nasal noise. That's why "senpai" is pronounced closer to "sempai" by actual Japanese people, and why "complex" is spelled コンプレックス. Nasal noises can change depending on what consonant sounds come afterwards.

So in general, if you have an "m" sound directly after a vowel, and it's not at the end of the word, it turns into ン. Converting things between katakana and other languages is fucked, though, so don't feel bad if you have to look things up all the time, even when you're properly "fluent."

Yup. It's fucking hard.
Can be done, but requires some insane effort. Specially when you get past the "radicals" or simple kanji. Things get insane.

I kind of gave up.

But also is used as a "n" sound. Optimus Prime is コンボイ (Convoy) in Japan. It's somewhere between n and m, a sound we don't exactly have. Just like the "r" sound is between r and l and we have le ebin engrish maymays. It's also why "ry" can be a bit of a difficult sound to make like in 旅館 (ryokan). Linguistically, there is no one-to-one match between some English and Japanese sounds. There's a reason there are gaijin and engrish stereotypes: no one tries to learn the proper pronunciation of words as much as the rest of the language.

That's why I said nasal sound, since it covers N and M. But I like I said earlier, I think it all depends on context. The sound you make when saying the character is going to be affected at least slightly by what it's surrounded by.

But if you want to bring up sounds that don't have perfect equivalents in English, I'd also sayし/じ, ち/ぢ, つ/づ, and ふ (plus ぶ depending on accent) are also up there. Most Japanese speakers will understand you if you pronounce them how they're written in foreign romaji, but they'll still be slightly off, because romaji can only approximate.

>>381462548
Yeah, even N1 is basically 13-year-old Japanese with some more difficult concepts sprinkled in. People overestimate how much the levels are worth; all being at N1 means is that you have a good foundation for continuing to learn the language in a nuanced way. Thirteen-year-olds certainly aren't stupid, but they don't necessarily have the experience to understand everything there is to the language, especially as you drift further and further away from contemporary or un-stylized writing.
>>
>>381463173
I wonder if its easier for a finnish speaking person to learn japanese vs a native english speaker.

I never understood kanji. An American 8-year-old can read anything you put in front of him. He might not understand some words, but he can sound them out. Contrast that with a Japanese kid of the same age, who simply doesn't know enough kanji to follow along with a lot of stuff. And no, furigana is not an excuse.

Learning to read kanji is fucking easy. To me it's disappointing how many people have no clue about phono-semantic compounds, and how they can help you to often guess the pronunciation of a character that contains a particular component.

The biggest challenge for me is acquiring vocabulary (a never-ending process, to say the least), and being able to recall it and identify it in a spoken setting.
>>
>>381467009
Takes around ~2-3 years 30-60 minutes of daily effort to become fluent.

Think about it like this. You are probably wasting your daily time anyway. You can at least find 30-60 minutes a day that you were normally going to waste and instead spend it on studying a language.

That thought let me to learning Japanese.
>>

I agree with you and I have the same experience.

美術館 means museam which I didn't know. But literally says "beautiful art public building"

you can also just guess that it's going to be pronounced bi-jutsu-can because of those kanji.

That's why I fucking hate anti-kanji shitters on 4chan. Kanji is your greatest friend in learning the Japanese language. Not your enemy.
>>
>>381467425
It's only boring to you because you already know it. There isn't nearly as much of a mystique to it.

Yeah but you were probably a little child back then.

Believe it or not being older makes you actually faster at learning a language. Also there are a lot of better tools out there right now to learn a language compared to being a kid in the 80s writing everything down on paper instead of using smart digital tools.
