Probably not. I'm still sour about the whole "Timers. Timers Everywhere" thing. I completed the campaign but having no opportunity to set up overwatch ambushes, flank enemies or just properly position my squad because of turn limits sucked the fun out of it for me. I get that they wanted to counter overwatch creeping but they just forced rushing instead. I don't think any DLC could motivate me to do another playthrough.

Yes because I liked Xcom 2 a lot despite the technical and optimization problems. Hopefully they shoot the expansion to the long war 2 guys early so it will be compatible on release.

>XCOM® 2: War of the Chosen adds extensive new content in the fight against ADVENT when additional resistance factions form in order to eliminate the alien threat on Earth. In response, a new enemy, known as the “Chosen,” emerges with one goal: recapture the Commander. This expansion includes new Hero classes to counter the “Chosen”, new enemies, missions, environments and increased depth in strategic gameplay.
>>
>>381437935
>he cheeses the game instead of installing mods that prevent rulers from being executed or remove repeater mechanics entirely

Neat, I'll get it then.
>>
I was really, really skeptical about the original XCOM reboot happening and when it did drop i felt resolved in bashing it with my other retarded purist posters.

It WAS basically an average game spitting on a series with a prestigious legacy. However, XCOM 2 actually surprised me, and maybe it was because i was ready to accept the fact that this was now a different game, but reading about the development of this expansion I have to admit that in the complete sea of shit that is modern videogame development, DLC and horrible nothingness expansions, these guys are at least genuinely trying to make a fun and polished experience. It's still not XCOM but it's way better from 90% of other games that have been coming out.
>>
>>381438053
Using your smarts is cheesing?
Sorry you're so dumb that you had to refute with a greentext.
>>
>>381437180
My only issue was the timer and the concept. Mechanically and gameplay wise I loved it. However the whole under dog resistence angle pissed me off. I love the idea of Xcom as a multinational paramilitary organization. Not some bullshit edgy rebels. Anarchy's Children exemplifies my problem with the game the most. Its absolute dog shit cosmetic DLC.
>>
>>381438053
But then I would have to cry on maltanese basket weaving forum about how much the rulers are devastating my virgin ass
>>
>>381433310
Fuck yeah I'm hyped!
>>
>>381438160

It's not smarts. You know this. Don't bullshit it.

Killing rulers with repeaters is basically an exploit and it is my hope they'll patch it out, along with making sure you can't instakill (or remove from the map) the Chosen.

It is. You're being dishonest. 15% to instantly kill a "boss" character with every shot (as you said you equipped it on every soldier) is way more likely than you're saying.

You're also missing the point. Instantly killing an enemy that's supposed to be tough with RNG on the first turn isn't fun nor is it a show of "smarts." It's just deeply disappointing.

No. They fucked up on XCOM 2s mission design and enemy AI. The first was cozy besides the rescue missions while the 2nd was just stressful. I'd rather play missions where I'm not given some ridiculous turn limit and the AI doesn't magically know where I am/where to patrol at set intervals when I'm still hidden. Maybe there are mods to fix this but that requires buying the game to apply and it's still $60 USD on steam.

it's true
the probability of you getting at least 1 repeater kill with a squad of 6 is essentially the chance for none of your characters to trigger a repeater kill, which is calculated as such:

1 - [(the chance not to trigger a repeater kill) ^ (number of squadmates)]

or

1 - (0.85)^6 = 0.6228 blahblahblah

so just over a %60 chance to instakill.

The idea that they think people want "sooper serious xtreme"aliens instead of lobstermen with plasma canon is idiotic.

Don't like that they're pandering to the tacticool Chernobyl gas-mask and realistic Navy Seals crowd.

And the last DLC was mediocre, overpriced, and didn't add much to the base game.

It feels like such a waste. I bet this won't even be some kind of continuation and instead, like Enemy Within, will just augment a new game with a bunch of shoehorned stuff that doesn't matter. Even the new bosses just seem like retooled ruler so far.
>>
One of the problems I had with XCOM zwei was that the game was just so.. ugly. Like purposely it looks like shit. The first was so clean and pristine.
>>
>>381438029
Reapers, Skirmishers and Templars are the most unimaginative and boring faction names.

The world always had a slight campy b-movie charm to it. Instead we get some quality dead horse names straight out of a generic science fiction game.

Get true concealment and don't be afraid to reload saves. You may even need a reseed mod since reloading and taking the same shot has the same result.

Once you get better and know the game you'll reload less and hopefully stop savescumming

that's why i said first playthough dumbass. Maybe it's his first tactical shooter and he's gonna lose his one good squad cause he doesn't know about swapping people around, it doesn't mean reload everysingle shot.

Maybe he shouldn't get a squad wipe because the sectopod is and it surprised him cause he doesn't know what it is. You learn to roll with the 99% misses, new players would rage quit and call the game shit

I already sank quite a few hours into vanilla and recently got into mods.

Looks like a good chunk of content. I just hope they set a realistic price. 40$+ is too much so it better be cheaper than that.

Skirmishers sound interesting since they will are Advent rebels and will have the alien lords extra turn ability at high levels.

And Soldiers relationship thing seems cool.

Non dude its about my unit eating a 3% crit while missing half of his 80% hitchance shots.

It's about beeing forced to restart levels untill you learn learn them because often times you cant play defensive because you are on a timer. (Which isn't that fun either)

I want to be able to complete a level without anyone ending up death with a tactical approach and not by learning where the fucking enemies will be by replaying the shit over and over.

You might be a masochist that like hammering his head against the wall but I am not. Xcom enemy unknown had the same problem but it wasn't as bad.

Also the decision to let the aliens take over the eRth and you are some underground shutter running around was bad. Why would the fkn aliens that have gazillions of ships that could pulverize the earth infiltrate and run their fkn governments/military. It's retardet as fuck and takes all the tension out.

XCOM 2 grated on my nerves immensely.
XCOM was far too easy, due to the limited mechanics, so to fix it they.... doubled down on the mechanics while generally making enemies stronger and more numerous. Eh.
It's not the worst game I've played, i would even say I enjoyed it. But the game tested my patience far too much.

They need to get rid of the goddamn soldier gear/skills are tied to experience bullshit. Just make soldiers get better the more they're used.

Don't fucking gimp me by not letting my guy carry a second rocket launcher because he hasn't killed 50 ayys yet. Gimp him because he's weak and carrying a second rocket launcher reduces his movement by 2 and gives him an additional -10% AIM when on Overwatch.

>>
>>381466321
No it fucking doesn't.

It triples the difficulty while still requiring you to have veterans while making them even more fragile and easy to lose. A fleshwound may as well be a fatality because you won't see them again for 8 hours and they're not gaining any experience.
Two actions per turn still devolves combat into take the risk of shooting and missing and having one of your dudes die or use high explosives.

By the mid game my roster was one sniper, one medic, one engineer, and three heavies, because anything less just wasn't a guarantee and squadsight is OP. Blow up everything as soon as it spawns or someone dies.
And that's how it was in the originals, sure, but a dead veteran was an "Ah shit" moment, and then you moved on and hired another dozen rookies. A dead veteran in nuXCOM is crippling.
>>
>>381463562
if a ruleset is designed explicitely to destroy you it will destroy you.

there are no limitations on what can constitute a rule, but by definition to play a game you have to operate within those rules. Taken to the extreme, if you make it so aliens have 100% accuracy and squadies have zero, there is no amount of "adaptation" that will ever bridge that gap. You will never hit anything and they will always hit you. You can create those rules, but when playing within them there is nothing you can do about it.

Satisfyingly hard games are about creating seemingly insurmountable odds while putting in a series of clever mechanical interactions that can be exploited to keep the player beating the odds even when things look dire so long as s/he is careful and meticulous in his/her planning

the LW devs got a little too excited at seeing someone rise to their challenge, and lost sight of that important design tenet. In LW2 they've produced a slog that specifically punishes the people they're trying to cater to.

The SPARK/Ruler DLC is supposed to already be balanced with the base game (of course we all know it's not). WotC though has new content that they'll have to adjust the previous DLCs around.

I don't think it's guaranteed they'll bring all changes over like the SPARK buffs, which look like they're made to work with the expansion content. They'll probably make the ruler changes (no guaranteed reaction, different quest to unlock rulers) universal since that's the DLC everyone bitches about.

Xcom Enemy unknown/within: kill alien invading earth in tactical turn based squad battle pushing technology new, aquired and combined to its limits.

Rulers and Shen's Last Gift are good. May as well just grab the Reinforcement pack.
>>
>>381468856
Where can I start?
>>
>>381468083
Sure, plenty

Build GTS first, then AWC
Advanced warfare will keep your troops from getting wounded and out of the fight constantly. That's the biggest issue I had upfront

First major upgrade should be magnetic weapons. People like armor to be 'safe' but nothing is safer than killing enemies before they shoot

THE MOMENT YOU KILL A MUTON, AUTOSPY HIM. This gets you increased grenadier range and plasma grenades

Mimic Beacons. Carry 1 or 2 for each mission to bail you out if you get caught out of cover or flanked by a big guy

I personally ran with 2 grenadiers, 2 rangers, and 1 specialist/1 sniper the majority of the game and it went fine, but Psi Ops are STUPID OP once you train them enough, so get a psi lab early if possible.

Dont worry about the AVATAR timer too much, since you get a countdown of 20 days after it fills up and you just need to raid a base to remove it,

I would start a commander ironman run with the 1st mission resulting in no deaths.

Also if someone happens to get poisoned/burning near death just fucking evac them, better safe than dead

Finally, USE THE ENVIRONMENT. On a rooftop and you're flanked? Blow the ground up from under them. Now you have height advantage and they just took fall damage and cant reach you. That being said, don't be an idiot and group 4 guys next to eachother on a roof. spread em out.

Ayys are not that scary, so ive found. Their first action is almost always psi zombie. gives you 2 full turns to kill them
>>
>>381469046
thx m8, I'll pass em on

Can I just start 2 then?

Digital Deluxe comes with the game and most of DLC right?
>>
>>381469887
Dont bother with Digital Deluxe, most of the DLC is just mediocre and the King Creatures will fuck you up first playthrough

You don't need to play XCOM 1 to enjoy XCOM 2

I prefer 2 because it's got a lot of gameplay elements upgraded and tweaked, especially with environmental damage, destroying cover, etc.

HOWEVER. People bitch about the 'timers' on XCOM 2 a lot. I never found them to be a huge deal, but something to consider.

You cant go wrong with either. If you're getting XCOM 1 get the DLC, if you're getting XCOM 2 don't bother
>>
I most certainly will. It's not really the expansion I wish the game was getting, but it looks like it has the potential to be cool enough anyway. I'm not too keen on the Chosen themselves, though. What if I like a challenge?

It's only 5 dollars more and I can always disable the DLC.
>>
>>381469887

You can start with 2. It's arguably better than 1. The DLC is nice to have, but I'd seriously disable Alien Kings for an initial playthrough. They'll fuck you up without warning and are meant for players who already know how to best exploit the system just to get by. Shen's Last Gift is good though, provides a really neat mission and an extra class. Anarchy's Children is worthless though, since you can download all the cosmetics you could ever want off of the steam workshop for free.

>People bitch about the 'timers' on XCOM 2 a lot. I never found them to be a huge deal, but something to consider.
Oh yeah, when you are on timed mission you must NOT make a tiniest mistake that would cause a single turn delay, otherwise you are guaranteed to lose a match without some heavy savescumming.
>>
>>381470510
I don't agree with that Anon, I think the DLC at a discount as certainly not too bad. One is just a mostly useless set of bad customization tools, but the other two add legitimate content that is going to be rebalanced and buffed/made more fair for the coming expansion anyway.
>>
>>381469046
>Ayys are not that scary, so ive found. Their first action is almost always psi zombie. gives you 2 full turns to kill them

I beat it on Commander ironman dummy, cry more.

If you keep one Ranger concealed to scout out the front lines you can constantly run forward without any trouble. I generally would beat missions with 3-4 turns remaining once I got the necessary troop upgrades.

Overwatch turtling in XCOM 1 was fucking boring and I hated it.
>>
>>381470712
>>381470885

The timers are fine but i agree they should be optional. or at least have some expanded settings.

>really enjoying iron man run.
>escort going great
>random shot destroys evac point
>new evac 3 turns away with 2 turns left.

Cool but literally killed that run for me.
>>
>>381471209

>Overwatch turtling

Yeah, I fucking hated that as well. Timers aren't perfect but holy shit I'd rather take a loss because of a turn timer than move forward one pixel and get blown away by a ton of aliens.
>>
>>381433310
Yes. It is the only thing from E3 that made me happy. I love XCOM, and while the Chosen's art direction isn't something I'm big on, I'm still interested if Jake isn't lying out of his ass and promising it'll be bigger than what EW was to EU.

I haven't played LW2 yet, but I'm hoping this expansion will be compatible with it too.
>>
>>381471320

Yeah they definitely do need a lot of work. Wasn't there a mod that places new evac zones really close to where the first one showed up though? It's been a really long time since I've played but I swear I had that one installed.
>>
>>381471320
Escort missions are terrifying for that reason alone. I rush to get within range every time to avoid bullshit like that. I've never had an evac point destroyed, that's interesting.
>>
>>381471209
Can you elaborate your tactics? I think I like it how you are doing it.
>>
>>381471209
>>381471402

But then they found ways to fix overwatch turtling in XCOM1 with stuff like meld, exalt missions, and yeah, the occasional timed mission. I enjoy XCOM 2 as well, but timers aren't the only answer.
>>
>>381436923

>>
>escort missions
>bring ranger/grenadier squad, one battle scanner and 2 mimic beacons
>proceed to fuck everything in sight

ayyliens cannot fuck me with rng if there is nowhere to hide
>>
>>381471638

Most missions have only 3-4 pods of enemies. A ranger with the concealment skill (I think it's third tier?) won't be revealed when everyone else fires, only if they themselves fire or are spotted. You can essentially go without using one unit for two encounters to give you the ability to scout around and plan engagements. The lack of firepower from one unit is more than made up for by your ability to be in control when the fight starts. For the last pod, they can fight as normal because you know nothing else is coming.
>>
>>381437553
Massive increase in lethalness makes engagements very binary (read: take out every significant threat in one turn or risk losing guys). In EU it wasn't unusual for a firefight to drag for several turns, if that's happening in 2 you've fucked up.

In terms of setting all of contemporary Earth versus unknown threat is more interesting and 'believable' than a bunch of gorillas in an old ship.
>>
>>381467985
something like bradford still saves you, you just control another team on another mission
>>
>>381471638
When you get rangers you can keep them concealed or have them reconceal when they are revealed (or both)

On difficult timer missions I'll two rangers at point and they'll scout out the front areas. When we find an ayy I'll choose how/when to activate the pod, eliminate it in 1/2 turns and carry on. I'll always keep one ranger concealed and scouting the front lines, in case i need to find new cover and I don't know if ill trigger another group of aliums

If I need my rangers I'll use them and say fuck it to concealment. At that point I usually have 1 or 2 mimic beacons available so If I get really boned I'll throw those out for a free turn to get adequate cover.

With this I rarely don't use all of my movement/action points. Overwatch isn't really that good, I'd rather find the pods and pick them off as I sprint to the capture point.

Of course, if I'm pressed on time on hacking missions I'll blow a hole in the wall of the building and my specialist will have line of sight to hack.

I only failed 4 missions on my commander ironman mission and 3 of them were due to destroying/killing the objective. 1 was running out of time

I generally try to get them all trained up, so that my final squad is all Colonels. it really helps when one of your squaddies get gravely injured and is out for a month or so.

I find that the best missions to train the rookies are supply raid and blacksite raids since they don't have timers and you can take your sweet time picking ayys apart

also I find it's best to have all classes pick the same traits so that they're fully interchangeable. also you realistically don't need more than three specialists or more than two sharpshooters, but you'd be wise to have five grenadiers, and minimum of three rangers in rotation.

two psi operatives are a must and I can't imagine a better squad composition than 2 psi operatives, ranger, 2 grenadiers and a specialist

As commander, my priority list for which alien race to try recruiting from does start with Vipers.
After that it's Andromedons. For some reason they strike me as more intelligent, or at least more independent than most of the alien forces.
Then Mutons, lower on the list because of their lesser intelligence and greater aggressiveness. Not sure about the strength of their loyalty though, which is one thing keeping them at spot #3.
Then Sectoids. Their psychic powers would make them more dangerous to contain, and I question whether they even have independent minds of their own to sway, and aren't just organic drones (the same question could be asked of the others, but even moreso for sectoids).
Crysalids? Please no. I don't even know how Advent feels it's safe fighting alongside them.

Even without a full enemy recruitment mechanic, I feel like you should still get some sort of bonus for ending a mission with unconscious or mind controlled enemies left on the map. Like access to bonus intel, or maybe alien materials (especially in the case of robotic enemies).
