I'd start with stealing the Xbone's D-pad and the Steam controller's two-stage triggers.
Would Cherry MX-esque buttons be going too far? I'm honestly not sure.

With 5 button mice, you have the same number of inputs as a modern gamepad

Everything this thing is + less clicky trackpad and bumpers. Maybe divide the backpaddles in two so I'll have 4 of them.
