You don't invest points, all the skills unlock as you level, and you can switch out your active ones whenever demons aren't trying to rape your face. So essentially it's the same as D2's system, except you can change in the field, and it doesn't cost you gold to do so.

Its not the same as d2. D2 used a solid skill tree system with prequistes and then synergies.
Synergies were added because people were upset about wasted ability points in their builds.
This eventually led to the brain dead decision to just remove it all because cry baby stupid people got really upset that they misspent points.

Blizzard was very lazy and used their World of Warcraft cartoony design in Diablo 3.
The old Diablos were very grim dark and this cartoony half assed shit was a slap in the face to any serious fan. Also the skill tree in Diablo 3 is fucking horrid.

It's going to be trash because of the MOBA action bar limit.
If you want a summonmancer, that's 4 out of 6 skills taken just to have your pets out.
The fifth one will go for your resource generator, because you can't do anything in D3 without constantly spamming something.
Then you have 1 slot left for utility. Probably for a single curse.

Don't expect the same gameplay like in D2 where you had 4-5 curses, corpse explosion, possibly teleport from Enigma, etc.

Short answer is that the game was garbage before Reaper of Souls came out. And it's still not great afterwards but it's fun for a while.

The issue flowed into the fact blizzards d3 dev misunderstood the point of the game and thought it revolved entirely around loot.

D3 has high production values, satisfying combat, and a difficulty-scaling system that allows for absurd levels of overall character growth, all of which are great.

In addition to that, though, blizz made a number of subjective design choices that rub certain players wrong, particularly the kind of players that like to be autistic about top-down hack-and-slashes. Meanwhile, I happen to love the game, and plan on buying the necro pack for the express purpose of supporting it.

Moral of the story: 8.5/10 game, plus or minus 1.5 based on how you feel about some of Blizzards design choices.

There was a ton of shit to hate back before RoS, but the end game is literally WoW 2.0. Season? Get character maxed ASAP, get the same set pieces, grind rifts, repeat. So many abilities are totally useless and even when fun item-based builds started emerging, they were nerfed back into uselessness.
